Anyone have pictures of Newhall Road or Sanderson Street around 1920s? I can find plenty of images of Attercliffe but nothing specific for these two areas where my Grandparents lived.

Thanks

Thanks Kidorry - I never realised they were such substantial houses - can't imagine why they were all demolished - when you think what the 'replacements' turned out to be like.

My mum lived at 25 Newhall Road - I am guessing that would be the opposite end of the road to where you lived. Is the Adelphi up near Attercliffe Road. I drive along there sometimes and seem to remember an old dance hall on the right hand side as you go into Sheffield.

If I am rite the dance hall you are thinking of was the central, I spent many happy hours there. Good old days.

So you will remember the Forge pub, my mum was a barmaid there until 1968
and my dad and husband worked at the Brightside Foundry.

She probably served me a pint or several because we called in there after we had finished work.

Thanks for the picture Joan L - I can't imagine Newhall Road changed much between the 20s and 60s. I think I can remember my mum saying she caught the Millhouses tram to travel to work.

I went to Newhall School. Remember Mr Beal, Miss Coupe and the early morning assemblies in the hall. Remrmber well the motto over the headmasters desk "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do . Do it with all thy might. They were great days but during the war and the Sheffield Blitz we held services for the Brown family who were killed in the Sunday night raid Dec. 14/15th December.Sadly seem to have lost touch with most of the schoolmates Johnny Crowther. Nick-Nack. Micky Horner and lots of others. Would love to get in touch with anyof them that remember.

We lived for a time at 61 Newhall Road, this being in the 1940s. A few doors up was a greengrocers, called Pepperdine I think --and later a family called Evans (son Arnold) too it on. Our front room was converted into a Ladies hairdressing salon, run by a Mrs Eardley, who also had a grocer's shop somewhere on Don Road.

Remember the bell behind the headmaster's desk? This was dedicated to the memory of the headmaster before Jerry Bronks, and he died suddenly after collapsing on his way to a football match at Hillsborough. He was running for a tram in the city centre when he collapsed.

John Elmore is my brother we lived at 7 court 2 on Newhall Road in the back to backs opposite Sandersons . I can remember fetching bowl of pudding and custard from their canteen for 4d in old money. We moved to Sicey Avenue in 1956. John is the only one of the family still living in Sheffield. The rest of the family now live in Lincolnshire

My family lived at No 61 Newhall Road, but this was in the 1940s, in the same yard as the Pepperdine's who kept the local fruit shop (a few doors away) until it passed to the Evans family. I think the Evans' son was called Arnold. At No 61, for a time our front room was taken over by a woman called Yeardley (from Don Road) and used as a hairdressers. Roy Jow lived not far from us, on the opposite side of the road. We later moved to Paget Street, but I never lived in the Newhall area again after some time in late 1951 when we moved to another part of Sheffield. However, I always remember the place with great affection. Some great people lived down there.

Hi all

I am Roy Jow's daughter he lived on Newhall road not sure what number though. He had three sisters Audrey, Pat and Carol the youngest. Sadly there is only my dad and Aunty Carol now. He always speaks about the good old days and how friendly everyone were. My grandad Ernest had a scrapyard at the bottom of Broughton Lane.

If any questions I'm sure my dad would love to hear from anyone.

Hi Trace, Give my best wishes to Roy. We were in the same class at Newhall, and for a time I lived on Newhall Road before switching to Paget Street. I met Roy a few years ago at a class reunion, and it was our first meeting for many, many years. I don't think Roy came to the last reunion. It is now some time since we all got together, and, sadly, I doubt if it will happen again. Is Roy on Facebook? Send me a PM. K

Newhall Road had a bus stop at the Attercliffe end and all the kids from Hunstman Gardens School (as well as some other schools I think ?) had to go to either Hadfield House Lane or Hartley Brook Schools for secondary education - and we had to 'bus it'. School uniforms, bus passes - remember coming home with a 'domestic science' effort - some sort of stew thing in a china bowl - well of course with the great drivers and bus suspension I arrived home with half the effort down my dress!

The name Battersby rings a bell - which years was this and what classes were you in - I left in 1962 and my last form class was Mr. Bradbury. There used to be an Art teacher (I think it was Art) but anyway she had long black hair and used to practice singing 'Blue Moon' in a Jazz sort of way at lunch time. There was also a craft teacher who was something like Hungarian and I was useless - he used to look at my work and say 'Oh my dear girl' and shake his head - he had good reason still messy and cannot cut a straight line
