So after the other conversation about meadowhall's Sainsburys and there was alot of response to that so therefore thought I would set this topic up. So people who are moving in and out of Meadowhall? I am really interested and don't know exactly???

From what I've heard from people who work at meadowhall, Boots are taking over where Allders used to be and makimg a massive store all on one floor.

Unsure as to what's going to be where the downstairs boots is... I heard possibly a(nother/ bigger) Monsoon. Accessorize were advertising for staff for a new store in meadowhall and they're owned by monsoon so maybe...

SHops that most other similar sized cities have that we should (in town preferably, but frankly Meadowhall is a start), and before you start, I don't quite know why I'm saying all this because I'm supposed to be a socialist, but on the other hand I feel that the local economy would benefit so much from these kind of companies investing in the town centre. I wouldn't sacrifice any of our boutiques and one-off shops for any of these though:

Mango (what is wrong with them?! York has one for arses sake!)
Mikey (there's a little one in Meadowhall but they should have a little store in town too)
Shellys
Faith (own store please, none of these Debenhams and TopShop excuses)
Miss Selfridge (why did they do away with the Debenhams outlet?!)
Zara (dudes! build one in town!!!!)
French Connection
Morgan

I'll add more when I think of them.

And I know I'm a hypocrite

Okay - contentious post alert.....

Given the fact that people travel so far to shop in these huge shopping centres, Meadowhall is losing out bigtime to the Trafford centre now, and it would be futile to try to compete on the same level.

We have all been saturated with the 'big names' to the point that every city centre and shopping centre is now a clone of the next.

I believe Sheffield (and possibly Meadowhall) should lead the inevitable backlash against this, and seek to attract independent and/or specialist stores that cannot easily be found elsewhere in the country.

I hold Nottingham's shopping centre up as an example for this theory

Has it never occurred to you people that maybe there is more space for more/new shops in other towns?

H+M have been trying to open a branch in town now for 10 years, and it's never happened before now due to the lack of space, especially for large stores, in Sheffield.

Very high rents/rates for City Centre facilities is so prohibitive these days that only the chains can afford the costs involved. The market is suffering very badly for lack of customers. So what do you suggest to attract these independent and/or specialist stores.

the rents in meadowhall are so huge its unreal, also town it just as bad, smaller firms simply cannot afford the prime locations which cost around 20K a month in rent for a small unit.

Sad, but true, thats why shops can't stay open on Division Street very long unless they charge realy high prices. I'm still sad that SUMO was forced to close. :(

These costs are ones that the small chains can't afford for example Greggs make there money but if say Cooplands were in they just would not be able to afford it. Rents are huge but still the shops that are in Meadowhall pay there staff and rent and profit so its not that bad.

There seems to be a two way split emerging here. One wants branches of known and established chains ie Zara, H&M and the like. This will come in time as the smaller units at the top of Fargate and in Orchard Sq are being made bigger to accomodate them.

The second cry is for more independent/specialist type shops. I cannot see this happening in the city centre. By definition they have to stock items not found in the chains and larger stores. These items/brands are usually more expensive and generally less well known other than to the cognoscenti. You cannot sell enough of these products to cover the rents and rates in a town centre location there simply are not enough people that recognise the brands or that are prepared to spend that much on them.

These small independent retailers will still exist to some extent but probably further out of town. Take Abbeydale Road starting at Totley Brook, Seasons Gift Shop with some lovely gift things not found anywhere else. Penrose & Reitburg at the bottom of Dore Road, really individual furnishings not found elsewhere. At Millhouses quite a few shops including specialist pet shop and a good card shop. Further on the new Specialist Snooker Cue shop, Oriental Rug Company, Calows Classical CD shop, Obscure Militaria type shop, Vamp Boutique, and so on.

We went to the Trafford Centre on Saturday and boy was that new John Lewis fantastic (thought you'd like to know Strix as you used to work for them). It's really well laid out and airy, the selection of products is fantastic and the John Lewis Price Promise is applied properly (unlike Cole's). Selfridges is still a nice commodity to have there but parts of it are starting to look incredibly tired. Perhaps they need to invest some more money into making it look a bit better. But this time John Lewis really shined and left a lasting impression!

| edit |
The Trafford Centre also has a Space.NK so that means it wins hands down anyway. Got some of that Cinnamon Buns shower gel on Saturday - is awesome!

Well worth a visit. You get the impression that they know what they're talking about rather than some places where staff can be out of their depth when it comes to specialist knowledge.

That would be a strange move for them, as nationally Boots have admitted that their product diversification hasn't worked, and they're actually talking about renting out space in their larger stores to other traders.

I can't say there's a lot at Meadowhall that exites me, nor likely to be, but the one "chain" store I really miss having in Sheffield is Muji.

The one in Meadowhall is rubbish, it's like a clearance shop, though they do have the best menswear in Meadowhall.

If Meadowhall wants to get more customers they need a shop like Selfridges, Harvey Nichols or even John Lewis, people expect a big "high end" department store at a shopping mall of that size.

Ooh ooh some developments, WH Smith are moving into Allders. Boots are going to expand slightly and have there store on the upper level. Some department stores in meadowhall are considering expanding and there is a big possibility of primark coming into some of Sainsbury's old space. There should be five to possibly 12 new stores opening in the old Sainsbury space. This all sounds rather interesting.

If it's going to be Primark or some other "thrift" related shops than no. i'm not interested.

Meadowhall is becoming "town with a roof", and as I don't shop in town much due to the crappy shops it looks like I won't be shopping in Meadowhall much either.

In the end its all down to the guys with the big bank accounts at meadowhall constantly pushing the rent prices up forcing even the large names such as sainsburrys to leave. Yet they have so many empty places in meadowhall that you'd think they would lower the rent to encourage more shops.

If they dont change their attitude meadowhall will start to die off.
