Can anyone tell me how/why this road is named so. I can't find any reference to the word "inge" so it must be name or a localism? I used to live on this road between 1973 and 1982. Kevin Taylor.

Inge is of Anglo-Saxon origin. It means a follower of someone. Whether it's the origin of the inge in Broad Inge Crescent is doubtful. It's more probably named after some third rate local politician. Bill "Broad" Inge - so nicknamed on account of his glandular problem (so he says, but the shipment of pies for the Cambodian appeal never did turn up).

It could be a mis-spelling or alternative spelling of Ing, which is an old word for a field.

That makes sense. Cheers, Kevin.

Before the estate was built there was a large field between Bevan Way and Windmill Lane, that must have been the Broad Inge.

The entrance to the field was where Ash View junction is off Bevan Way.

Small track and a style led into the field.

Can we assume that Broad Inge Crescent is unique then, and no other
Street / Road / Crescent / Avenue etc carries the name "Broad Inge". Wonder how many other thoroughfares in Sheffield have acheived that status.
By the way when I worked for BT the second part of the name was always pronounced with a letter M in front. What fun we had mis-pronouncing the name.
