View Full Version : Faun Tractors in Forgemasters
jackthedog 19-07-2005, 13:24 Okay, so i'm a bit of a geek...
In Forgemasters on Brightside Lane iv'e just noticed there are two Faun heavy haulage tow-tractors, a Goliath and a Koloss.
The Koloss is being loaded as I type, and the Goliath is sat waiting just off the road.
I just wondered if anyone on the forum knows when they might be setting off, as when these things get moving they are pretty impressive.
I watched three of the massive things remove a huge transformer (no, not the toy robot things) from the Stocksbridge bypass one sunday night a couple of years ago. Very impressive stuff, watching a road train about the length of a football pitch winding it's way steadily down the bypass.
If anybody works there and knows anything about it, or is similarly geeky, please reply as I'd love to drive down there and watch the convoy get moving.
Pics, incase anyone out there is wondering what the hell i'm on about:

Wow, I think i might now be able to class myslef as a fully fledged loser...
Hi,
Used to work for Forgemasters up untill a couiple of yeras ago. It will probably be Friday or Saturday but in the very eraly hours when no traffic is about as they normally need to close janson street.
They normally go up the wrong side of the dual carriageway on Jason Street because they cant turn the corner of brideside lane/janson Street.
Hope this helps
Skatiechik 19-07-2005, 22:35 What they moving? They been selling weapons again?
jackthedog 20-07-2005, 08:01 Thanks for the info Owlszat

A few years ago I saw your trucks ( I am sure one was pulling and one was pushing) and a loaded trailer in between, parked in a layby on the A57 between Worksop and the A1. I started to count the wheels on the trailer and stopped when I got to 100 .How many did I miss.
Thanks.
jackthedog 08-08-2005, 09:41 drahdnagnol, you got mail... :)
drahdnagnol 27-08-2005, 11:12 hi jack the faun you saw was 1 of 7/8 we operate all over the world we also run a UNIPOWER built in house 750bhp cummins you can mail me direct and i will try to help you claytonnicky@aol.com
drahdnagnol 27-08-2005, 11:37 to alankearn you missed about 50 off the total mate. The way to count them is multiply the number of axles by 8 then that gives you the total amount of wheels plus about 4 spares then the tractors so thats a hell of a lot of nuts to check every day plus all the steering joints and pipes so it takes about 2 hours to check every day before you move
drahdnagnol 12-09-2005, 21:11 SPECIAL MESSAGE!!!!!!!!!
THIS MONDAY COMING WE ARE DUE TO MOVE ANOTHER CASTING FROM FORGEMASTERS TO KVEARNERS THRU THE NIGHT

drahdnagnol 12-09-2005, 21:16 on this move we will be using 3 prime movers 2 faun koloss and either a daf 95 or the UNIPOWER.
Twenty axle trailer 160 wheels with 300 tonne sat on top of it it should look impressive
nicky
i work in the foundry (burner)the casting that you have been moving was originally about 530 tonnes, i'm sure you know there is is another one that is going to kavernas shortly that is slightly heavier (about 20 or 30 tonnes).
if you recall having to have some bolt holes burned in the trailer,i was the one who burned them,i'll say hi when you come back:thumbsup:
john.
skatiechick
could have sworn they were oil refinery pipes-not guns:heyhey:
these castings are for the worlds largest screw-press appar
rently, for pressing wing strengtheners for the airbus-or something like that.
they are over a thousand tonnes in weight for the pair.
regards, john.
biggsy, is this job coming into the south shop at all?
Don_Kiddick 14-09-2005, 05:14 Just watched something that big go to/from SMS tonight
martss
sorry,i don't think the south machine shop has the craneage to lift these castings.
PS,i think that the casting at kavernas is staying there for a while as one of the cranes we need at f/masters to lift these castings is broken down, the long travel wheel bearings have bu***red up,i'm told it will be another two weeks before the crane is ready.
regards, john.
hi
ALE are in again, the faun kolloss & a unipower, at the moment the fitters are assembling the jig on the trailer for the casting, but sorry, i don't know when they will go into action.
regards, john.
drahdnagnol 18-09-2005, 10:40 hi all we are moving tomorrow night 19th at 11pm hopefully it should be good weather see you all later regards nicky
drahdnagnol 18-09-2005, 15:03 hi biggsy, kvearners told me that they are going out to china but dont know weve been told that many different stories
nicky
oof, when i said they were over a thousand tonnes for the pair, that was the cast weight they will end up at about 550 tonnes when finished,as for where they will end up is anyones guess, i'll ask our manager on the morrow;)
btw,i think you may be right as to the destination being as it's kvearners contract.
ps,the unipower rig that was at f/masters last week is gorgeous much nicer than the faun,it looks like something from the thunderbirds:thumbsup:
pps,good luck with the haul:clap:
regards,john.
drahdnagnol 18-09-2005, 19:32 its a pleasure to drive comfort and power all harnessed into 1 wot a tool 750bhp proper boys toy lol

hi nicky
afraid the crane aint mended yet, through thursday/friday we will be casting about 450 tonnes of metal (five ladles of 90tonnes each)it's gonna be a bitch without the 200 tonne crane:mad: ,there will be standing ladles all over the bl**dy place.
glad you arrived at kvearners ok,oh and that pile of muck seems to have appeared in front of the doors again, but it'll be gone by the time you come back:clap:
take care
john.

drahdnagnol 29-09-2005, 21:30 To martss yes it is a home made level at least you can see the bloody thing in the dark simple idea hosepipe and antifreeze works a treat lol hope to see you all in bout 6 weeks time when we move them around again
hi jack this must be something weird but im origanally from sheffield and now work for A.L.E
don't know if you're still posting nicky but if so do you know dave harper (the big kiwi) and would you have a number for him at all? he took my number a few months back when i caught up with him but i could do with his, known him about 7 or 8 years
i work in the same job as you but not on your sort of weights - did a modest 35ton load into Kvaerners PoW (or Davy Markham) about 2 months back from goole, it was 23' wide mind you which JUUUUUUST fits through the last set of traffic lights before you turn right into the gate ;)
