Anybody know what the story is behind the derelict house on Burngreave Road? When was it built? When did it become abandoned? Any pictures of it when it was occupied? I find it very interesting.

probably bought with a condition that it cant be demolished etc for so many years or unless it gets into a state, so its been left or somthing like that, its not like someone is going to buy it and deliberatley leave it that way for no reason.

Perhaps the owner is deceased or incapacitated or something?

I always wanted to buy this house when I was younger and turn it into a foster home... I still kind of do... its interesting that it used to be a remand centre for boys.

I had the opportunity to visit this house in the mid 80’s and it is a big place. A lot of big houses of a similar size are in the Burngreave and Pitsmoor area. When I first moved to Sheffield in the late 70’s I can always remember my Grandfathers house at the top of Andover Street and it was massive compared to what I was used to. It’s a pity these house’s have not got the same interest had they been in a different part of Sheffield.

But were someone to squat it and make some basic (even if only temporary) repairs there would be a massive outrage about dirty squatters wrecking treasured property

it got condemned in 1996 becausse of the roof and structure also it was abandoned 6 years before that because the old owners who lived in the property for only 6 months thought it was haunted saying they could hear children singing at night while they were in bed and polterguist activity in the kitching involving one of the residents being seriously injured by a cheesegrater of all things. looks like a great dooer upper opertunity but not for me thanks :)

I think you'd have to be very brave (or stupid) to squat it! Surely not long before the roof starts caving in.

We drive past this every morning and have wondered many times about it's fate.

The building looks massive but I can't imagine it is a "do'er up" as it looks on the brink of collapse.

Is'nt there a group on here that love "investigating" this type of property? Maybe they could give us some further details on it?

JD.--re your comments as above were brought to my attention by family.
I also veiwed a sad looking Osborn House on photo bucket.
I was employed their for several years in the late 1960s, when it was a
Hostel for youths, aged between 16yrs and 20 years , subjects of a Probation Order.

Can you advise of its current situation ?

Hi Beth-- it was a grand and fabously maintained home, having
polished oak an mahogany doors, balastraded staircases leading
to the upstairs rooms. The first floor salon had oak parka flooring
A magnificant ornate fireplace , and the walls of the room were
decorated with panels of jade geen silk.
Can you tell me if the property remains or has been demolished ?

Quite right-- I now recollect the number as 128. I have just viewed
Osbourne House on Google street level route map - as they say " tempus fugit" what a sorry state it now is in. Will pay a visit up north to the
property later this year. Thanks all.

I pass this building often and I always think its a shame the state it is in. I imagine it must have been very grand at one time - does anyone have any pics of how it looked before it became derelict? Have any of the people who do those "urban exploring" things been in this building? any pics of the inside anyone?
It does seeoma shame that these boxy little new builds are going up everywhere when there are building like this falling apart.
There are lots of rather big, grand looking properties around burngreave and pitsmooe, did this used to be a wealthy area?

I used to work nights at shirecliffe house and it was a very strange place.Noises doors slamming going freezing cold and even the guard dog looked behind me and a mate and cowered then ran off leaving a trail of poo behind and that dog was not scared of anything. And it used to be a very strict boys home as one day i let a film crew in and they did a interview with/about a man who was in it when he was a lad,He was very distraught about the things that went off in there.

I think that the house was bequeathed to the Sheffield City Council and was to be used by the community, it was a Children's residential unit before it closed and was sold by the council.

It is an absolute disgrace that the house has been left in such a state and shows the level at which the council show total disregruard for the area.
The house should either be taken back by the council and reopened for its intended purpose, that is; whatever the area needs, or put back on the market.

I often drive past this building too. I also think it should be bought by an invester and used for which ever purpose the community requires it for. So many times companies are building new houses and flats when right under there nose is this prime spot for a major invester this is like a gold mine. Get all the law-breakers doing community service in the grounds and start doing fundraising events to raise a bit of money. Theres all these youths walking round bored rigid because theres nowhere to go when the council can apply to get this building back and turn it in to a youth centre,Playgroup or maybe a community hall. I read on burngreave messenger it has numerous rooms and a lot of original features so why not get all these rooms used even rent rooms for offices

It certainly was a very prosperous suburb, nerd...

You can see how grand some of the houses must have been 100/150 years ago, in their heyday.

Many rich merchants, and at least a Steel Magnate or two lived in the area.

There are some really beautiful Georgian buildings, opposite Christchurch, Pitsmoor, on Pitsmoor road. The Vicarage to CCP was a magnificent building.

Even the more "ordinary" houses, on the right, as you head up Burngreave road/ Spital hill can be seen to have been magnificent, at one time.

Yes, there are some gorgeous looking houses round here. I wonder what went so wrong, and when? I came along Burngreave road (I think thats what its called - past abbeyfield park going towards town) with my Granddad once, who lives in London. He wa saying that houses like the ones round here would go for millions if they were in or near London! I showed him some houses for sale in the area (at the time) on Rightmove and he was shocked by how (comparatively) cheap they were in this area. They are cheap even for Sheffield.

These areas prospered during the industrial revolution when the works owners wanted to be located close to their factories along Don Valley/Penistone Road together with the workers hence the mixed housing. As transport got better and the air quality got worse they moved further away from the dirt, grime and smog created by the factories and across town to the south west closer to open countryside and fresher air.

The problem is (as always) money.....Even if you got the house for nothing, the refurbishment cost would probably be far greater than the subsequent market value.

Hi , Ive just come across your post , I know it is a bit late, I can tell you what I know about Osbourn House. It was actually a probation hostel in the early 60s a place for young teenagers not violent or convicted of serious crimes.
I know, I was one of those young boys, I was about 16 and could not keep my hands off cars! I could hot wire any car in those days, so I would drive them around a little and return it unharmed! no set fire to it as the kids do to-day! So I got stopped one night and was sent to Sheffield Osbourn House, It was the other side of the planet at sixteen! I was there for six months, although most boys were there for twelve.

I worked for a scrap metal firm called G B Housley. its been nearly 50 years so its a bit sketchy, but I remember it was by a canal.I also remember a few days working for Woodhouse bricks, a horrible job!

I remember the rear of Osbourn House the superintendent had built a cricket concrete pad, I also remember opposite the house was a park, It does not seem to be there now (google street)

I can only remember a couple of other boys Don Day, Mick Beecroft, (I'm David Owen) there was a small scouse called Charlie, There was a tall boy who broke my nose I forgot his name! I think about 15 boys in total.
I think the superintendant was called Mr Jeferson or jefferies.
THere were some girls always hanging around, I think Linda Hollingswood!
Her parents had a stuffed fox in the bed room!!!

Its so sad to see the place as it is, it was never haunted when i was there!
I might just have a mooch round the old place, That will stir some gosts up in me!

Good luck to all you Sheffield people Regards David Owen.
