I just read this on Yahoo - http://uk.news.yahoo.com/050718/323/fnlep.html :loopy:

I can't believe it really, it seems ridiculous. What do women like so much about shoes?

Is that all ?

I bet I spend more than that in my lifetime on trainers.

I don't think I spend anywhere near enough that amount.

Hate the thought of being 'below average'

I'm off shopping

I know I don't spend that much - I hate wearing new shoes in so only buy them when I need to! However I can live with being below average in that way.:D

Is that all? Doesn't even register on the Imelda Marcos scale of shoe buying!

Easily done. I typically LOVE shoes and own stupid amounts in all diferent colours. And bags to a lesser degree.

I own more boots than shoes :suspect:

There's no such thing as too many pairs of spiky boots (according to Mr Strix), and I don't need to lie about prices coz I collect them in the sales :D

My wedding boots were the most expensive I've ever bought, but they were worth it as they are the same Nappa leather as my dress (see photos in signature)

Thing with shoes is that once you've grown up, your shoes will always fit, where as an impluse buy dress will be useless as your weight flunctuates throughout the month aswell as throughout the year. Well, thats what I say anyway - Caprice, the shoe addict :)

How could that be if the average per capita earnings in the UK is much lower then £31,000? I suppose it all could go on the plastic. Actually it probably does seeing the number of zero's on the national debt stats.

Huh I answered myself there!

It would be frightening if we all worked out what we spend in a lifetime on all sorts of individual things. Smoking would be the most expensive thing but the cost of cigarettes keeps going up and up so you wouldn't be able to calculate it. If you smoke, I think it would make £31,000 on shoes look like peanuts!

I love shoes and have a few pairs I have never worn but I always go to shops like TK Maxx and go through their jumble sale style stock (I just made up a tongue twister there!) so I can get the cheapest:clap:

The amount calculated was for a lifetime. It quoted the average spend being £40 per month on shoes.

I have to admit owning far too many shoes than is necessary! You can never have enough pairs.

I wonder how much we'd spend if we only bought our shoes from Jimmy Choo? I think I'll stick with PayLess, I don't need diamond encrusted shoes ...................... :)

Everyone should buy their shoes in the US:clap: Shoes are so cheap here I don't feel guilty - even if my shoes are merely ornaments that I never wear!

Are any of you girls cowboy boot fans? Just bought a pair of hand stitched cowboy boots for $30:clap:

Seriously, when you look at the prices of shoes & clothes here it makes you really mad how much we have to pay in Britain for the exact same thing. Anyone want a copy of the American LeRedoute catalogue? They charge the same price in $'s as thet do in £'s - almost HALF the price:suspect:

£31,000 is ridiculous. I have three pairs of shoes - the total I have spent on shoes this year is probably about £12.

Who is this person who has hundreds of pounds a year to spend on shoes?

I own about 60 pairs of shoes. Or so i last counted. But however im not too bad as only about 20 of them were over £30 and none of them over £50.

God im glad they created Jonothan James,s

I adore shoes (and bags). The thing is about shoes is they are so easy to buy compared to clothes - they are displayed better (you don't have to spend hours rummaging through rails to find a bargain), they are easier to try on and usually a size 5 is the same in every shop (unlike clothes...I seem to vary from a size 8 to a size 14 :suspect: ).

My most recent pair are a lovely pair of gold strappy heels!

Best buy would have to be my cowboy boots, I bought them about this time last year and they have been thoroughly loved ever since! :D

Like T020 I wear Jack boots during the week but I prefer some slinky, sling-back, high-heeled little numbers for the weekend! Like most women I like to spend a large amount of my income on pointless foot coverings.
I'm off out now, to the park, for a jog in my new running pumps!

Hand-stitched where tulip ? Some far-eastern sweat shop where the poor blighters have to work 12 hours a day seven days a week just to keep their kids from starving ?

Apologies if that does make you feel just a little bit gulty, it's not meant to be personal but is something we all ought to think about. :(

I bought my boots in a US shop, inside the boots in bold letters it says 'Made in the USA' I suppose it could be a lie and they were actually made in a third world country by badly payed overworked people. I hope you know where all your shoes, clothes and food comes from? I am not a conciousless bimbo who doesn't give a damn about exploitation. The boots as far as I know were not made in a US sweatshop by badly paid illegal immigrants either because they come from a large, famous US factory that make boots for ranchers.

£31,000?? Madness.
I buy maybe 2 - 3 pairs of footwear per year and I rarely pay more than £30 for each although occasionally up to £80.
I see footwear as disposable and I don't need a label to make it function better.
I have better places for my £31,000 to go and it looks like I'm doing well.

It might be worth finding out. The factory gate price would seem to be about $20 which is suspiciously cheap for a pair of hand made leather boots.

Wasn't there a scandal recently about WallMart employing 'badly paid illegal immigrants' ;)

My two pairs of shoes and two pairs of sandals were made in either Austria or Italy, but very little of my meagre wardrobe has a country of origin on the label.

Well, I live in a little town called Emmett. It is a farming community. Cowboy boots are very popular, they are a name brand you may have heard of 'Durango'.

Walmart has been accused of employing illegal immigrants but since these people are employed by an agency that is used by Walmart, the store has not been held responsible. Itinerant workers are not as badly treated as some people are led to believe but that would be straying way too far from the topic!

If you shop in Asda, you are shopping in Walmart. Prices are kept cheap by using workers in third world countries to produce cheap goods.

Don't be suspicious of my boots. They were $30. If they charge £150 for them in England then the shops are totally ripping people off! :suspect:

Seriously though, £31,000 in a life time works out to about £440 a year based on you buying shoes for 70 years (I think, not sure if I calculated it right?) That sounds excessive to me!:o

Greybeard isn't attacking you tulip, just pointing out that this does happen.

Many American companies have terrible human rights records. WalMart (the biggest retail chain in the world) has a very poor human rights record which is well-documented on the internet (try googling for Walmart and Human Rights).

Incidentally, they now own Asda. Do I buy clothes from there? Yes, sometimes.

Getting back to shoes, I own lots and lots; they are my favourite thing to buy!

EDIT: Just seen the WalMart thing has already been done - doh!

Julie Burchill on Shoes-ers
I just can’t help thinking that there must be some sort of inverse ratio between shoes bought and orgasms had. “Shoesers”, I’ve noticed, also tend to go in for girly evenings, where a lot of bad blush wine is downed, a few half-assed secrets revealed and a job-lot of men dissed. Yet these sexually desiccated boobies never have the guts to go the whole hog and cross the floor. The fact is that if you can’t “come off”, as it is coarsely known, with men then you’re probably a lesbian. Don’t fight it! Being a lesbian is both a good laugh and a noble cause, and there’s not a lot of things you can say both of.

I’m trying hard not to be judgmental here. But you know what? On their deathbed, people generally think: “I wish I’d had more sex!” I bet there aren’t many sad sods who think: “I wish I’d bought more shoes!”
