After Seeing A Thread About The Recent Decline Of Myers Grove School.I Thought I'd Ask If Anyone Can Remember When Howard Jones Came To Play A Couple Of Concerts?

It Must Have Been In About 1985,Because They Were Running A Nationwide Competition At The Time,To See Which School Could Raise The Most Cash For The Live Aid Fund.

Myers Grove Won The Competition And A Concert Was The Prize,However,As The School Was That Big He Had To Put On 2 Shows.

I Can Remember Having To Go To The Evening Performance,But Little Else,Other Than The Mime Fella He Used To Have Hanging Around On Stage.

However,Giving The Type Of Music I Listen To These Days And The Bands I've Seen,I Can Be Embarrassing When People Ask You "What Was The First Gig You Went To?":gag:

My sista went to MGC at that time and when she told me that H Jones was playing there Iasked if I could go with her. She said no.
She even ended up having her photograph taken with him.

I went to Bradfield school at the time but we all went up to spy through the windows but they were blacked out. Managed to hear it though!!!

Hello, Yes i do remmember Howard playing the Myers Grove school in 1985/86 i do believe. He was a big star then. I saw him and wanted to be in a band i now am and know him really well now. Although i do profess i did go to King Edward VII School on Glossop Road. I had loads of mates that went to Myers grove School though. Wasn't that the school where the headmaster's wife was killed by that crazy laywer who fled to france?. Anyway it was a great school Myers was. Like any school though now, just when they stopped corpral punishment everyone went crazy in schools because they knew they could get away with it. Thats do gooders for you though.

I went to MGS at that time - at the time of Live Aid - Mr Astle, the art teacher, was going to loads of concerts, taking photos, and getting them signed - we raised an absolute stack for Ethiopia, but were running neck and neck with another school for the biggest amount. I think both schools got a concert in the long run.

And that bloke that did all the mime was there too, if I remember correctly?

Bassplayer, sorry, no.... doesn't ring a bell.

I was in the 4th year (I think - either that or the 3rd year) when he played. Was this the year as Sharon and Ken? Should I know them...?

Or are you Ken?

I was there .... in the 5th year and it was me and some of my mates who suggested it after reading about it in a magazine, Just 17 I think.

BoroughGal, you're right about Mr Astle. He was my art teacher and he got loads of signed stuff from bands etc and the school had a big auction. I won a signed Boomtown Rats LP in a raffle (but someone pinched it years later!)

It was a great concert and everyone from the other local schools were so jealous!

I was there too. Got into the concert even though I'd started at Myers after the Live Aid collection. Whatever happened to Howard Jones?

I think he does those dodgy 80's revival things at the Arena every Christmas....

Yep, I bought a limited edition King single (Love and Pride if I'm not mistaken, wow, I LOVED them...) at the auction.

I paid well over the odds for it, probably about £10 for a single (and probably about 10 spending monies) just because I go carried away and HAD to have it....!

Good old Mr Astle. I think I heard he'd died? Is that right Fetish, do you know?

No idea about Mr Astle but I do know that Pete Kearnes the English/Drama teacher died a few years back.

Was it not a competition of some kind that every school in the UK entered?

Yes , you are right, it was a competition for all the schools in the country and the winning school hosted a concert with H. Jones.
As I said my younger sista really wound me up about not being able to go.

Yes it was but it was run and organised by Just 17 magazine. Anyone could enter as it was a national competition.

I was at Myers at the time, Mr Lloyd was my year tutor. It was great. I organised a walk from Holy Bush to Riv Post Office and back, but we did it backwards ! So who are you then, perhaps I knew you??

I was there. I think we raised just over 4000 pounds to win the national competition. I remember everyone trying to get a peak of Howard before the show. I think they had him in the science block for some reason...? At least, we were hanging around there out towards the path round to lower school (as it was then).

Like someone else said - It's kinda embarassing that this was my first gig. I think I may have fibbed about it a bit when I started hanging out at Rebels. :)

The first gig I ever saw was Howard Jones at the Sheffield city Hall. I think I was about 9 at the time and I was totally mesmerised. I loved his playing and his songs. I was fascinated at the beginning with the mime guy and Howard Jones fake fighting dancey thing.
I've loved his music for years as well as Sheffields finest 80's band The Human League.
A few years ago I found myself at an aftershow party he was at and I wanted to tell him he was the reason I became a piano player and a singer. For the first time and only time ever, I was completely dumbstruck! Never did tell him. So, If you see him....pass it on haha:hihi:

I remember this - I used to love Howard Jones. I went to Bradfield so there was a bit of rivalry with MG anyway & I was so jealous when I heard Howard Jones was playing.

We went to see him about 10 years ago at Brannigans.
