View Full Version : Def Leppard record is it rare??
gloriagrace 02-08-2009, 08:59 I have been given my Dads old record collection and have come across one that I think is quite rare? I need some advice on what to do with it. Do I sell on ebay?
Its Def Leppard 7" single with a picture sleeve Ride into the Sun.
Any advice welcome!!!! Thanks:huh:
metalman 02-08-2009, 09:06 What's the catalogue number? If it's on the Bludgeon Riffola label, CUS232, with a red label and a lyric insert, it's the valuable first issue. It should have the tracks Ride into the Sun, Getcha Rocks off and The Overture on it. No lyric insert will mean it's somewhat less valuable I think.
nikki-red 02-08-2009, 09:09 Whats on the picture sleeve? If its B/W with a leopard, a gramophone and the words 'THE DEF LEPPARD EP', theres one on Ebay for £50.00 buy it now.

melthebell 02-08-2009, 09:14 its in my "admittedly now 9 year old" record collector price guide a few times, you need to work out which copy it is
1979 - bludgeon riffola SRT/CUS/232 - the def leppard ep (ride into the sun, getcha rocks off, the overture)
RED LABEL, p/s with lyric insert, 150 only - £300
1979 - bludgeon riffola SRT/CUS/232 - the def leppard ep (ride into the sun, getcha rocks off, the overture)
RED LABEL,with/without p,s, 850 only - £250/£60
Bludgeon riffola MSB 001 - ride into the sun, getcha rocks off, the overture - reissue, yellow label, 15.000 pressed, no p,s - £18
Phonogram 6059 240 - ride into the sun, getcha rocks off, the overture - 2nd reissue, no p/s - £10
Phonogram 6059 240 - ride into the sun, getcha rocks off, the overture - mispressing, both sides play the overrture - £40
as yours has a sleeve it very much sounds like the first two, well done........us record collectors would love to get stuff like that cheap / free *jealous* lol
but the price also goes on what condition its in, more marks/scuffs, the price its worth drops
tbh i dont know the difference between both the first two copies, both sound identical??

that one sounds like a bootleg to me tbh
going on my price guide details the originals have red labels, the reissues have yellow
the one in that listing has white
metalman 02-08-2009, 09:20 Strangely enough my rare record price guide is also nine years old.. it doesn't have a cover though cause I bought it at some remainder book sale somewhere. Sounds like everybody's saying the same thing here anyway... over to the OP!
gloriagrace 02-08-2009, 09:21 Its 1978 Red label Blugden Riffola records (No insert) Its black & White with a lepard on the front. I would say its mint condition.
She I put it on ebay or take it to a collector?
gloriagrace 02-08-2009, 09:22 Cat number is cus 232
melthebell 02-08-2009, 09:26 id prolly say its definitely one of the first two then.........but sadly has lost the insert :(
which affects the price
metalman 02-08-2009, 09:27 Sounds like the genuine thing then. Why flog it? You could just keep it as part of Sheffield rock history and more importantly because it was part of your Dad's record collection. If you really want to sell it though, eBay or some specialist shop like Vinyl Tap in Leeds might be a good idea.
Sadly my copy is the yellow-labelled reissue with no p/s... I've got their second single as well but after that I sort of lost interest in them.

yeah ive had 2 price guides (and an american one)
ive not bought the last few tho tbh, it gets a bit expensive buying a new one every year/2/3 years lol
specially when prices dont change that readily tbh specially stuff like this.
might have to buy the next one tho, just for the later indie/dance stuff missing out of my 2000 one
metalman 02-08-2009, 09:30 Be warned though - condition is everything so unless your Dad only played it about once and then put it in a cupboard, you'll be lucky to get anywhere near what it says in the price guide.

yeah the first singles a great slice of NWOBHM
then they went mainstream and more hair metal that we all know :(
metalman 02-08-2009, 09:33 Gloria -are they all NWOBHM or is there other stuff as well?
Watched these guys and whitesnake at the arena and they rocked!
melthebell 02-08-2009, 09:34 condition grades here
http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/rarepriceguide.htm
generally NOTHINGS MINT unless its still sealed, most stuffs generally EX
tbh im not sure what grade a record thats ex, with a cover thats ex BUT missing an insert would be???

He did only really buy records to play once and put in a box and thats where this along with many others have been since the late 70's.
Ill give it some thought, it seems a shame to hold on to it when someone could get some enjoyment from it. (Def Leppard arnt really my thing)
Thanks for your help.
gloriagrace 02-08-2009, 09:37 Gloria -are they all NWOBHM or is there other stuff as well?
Oh god!!! What is NWOBHM? Its all late 70's punk and rock (most of which I have never heard of) some 7" and some 12"

NWOBHM = New Wave of British Heavy Metal = rather pointless category that heavy rock got put into in the immediate post-punk era. I liked a fair bit of it at the time - especially Triarchy (their Save the Khan single was the best thing in NWOBHM if you ask me) and Jameson Raid (local Birmingham band). Late 70s punk is going to be more up Mel's street I think.
You could always post up a list and see if there's any long lost gems we're looking for!

metalman 02-08-2009, 15:06 Is there??!! Never heard of either!! lol
Nick Gilder was a rather wimpy Canadian popster whose major hit was this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El6iQ2_dvlc).
On the other hand Kevin Coyne was an English blues singer with a voice that sounded as though he'd just had a good gargle with whisky and razorblades, and he did things like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ksxhrKhULM).
There can't be many record collections which contain both of these surely!

witht he likes of the tweets - birdie song, jasper carrot lps, bird sounds lps, napalm death and techno stuff like plastikman :)
throw in a bit of wagner, and steeleye span and the wurzals :)
metalman 02-08-2009, 15:25 I remember the Plasmatics, they were fronted (apt word!) by Wendy O'Williams, who tended to wear bits of black tape across her nipples. Devo were good, I liked them, but they were never really what you would call punk, they were more in that avant-garde area occupied by people like Pere Ubu. John Cooper Clarke was amusing in a Mancunian sort of way.
I've got Kevin Coyne's magnum opus, the Marjory Razorblade double album, but I don't have any Nick Gilder! But for variety I can probably match Mel: my last few purchases have included the 12th century religious music of Hidegarde van Bingen, Mick Harris's drum'n'bass'n'noise explorations in Quoit, Above & Beyond's trance compilations and some 70s folk and prog.

I have just been informed that some of its my Mums so that could be why its there. There is a Bros single that I know wasnt his!! I hate to admit but its mine!!
40summat 02-08-2009, 15:46 I also have the Leppard EP, the yellow label with the original sleeve (minus the insert)
and the red label neither in mint condition, but i still intend to hang on to them as they have miraculously survived about a thousand house moves over the years.
I got the yellow label one at a very early gig at a working mans club ( i can't remember which )
It was pre merchandising days so i went and had a T shirt printed with Def Leppard on, The guy in the printers thought i was part of the band, i should have told him i was i might have got it free.
I still laugh at the sheffield accent when he sings the words ''our life'' in Overture, it comes out as ''aar life'' it's worth having for that as i believe they were told to sound American when they got signed up.
gloriagrace 02-08-2009, 16:05 Just one more I need your to help with. I cant find it on anything!! Its called Bouquet Of Steel and has various artists on it and a book inside. Looks like its a Sheffield thing??

rglynn25 08-11-2009, 21:18 Hey I used to love def leppard in my younger years. I believe that is one of the first presses they did, Joe Elliot personally cut and stuck the vinyl cases. if it was signed probably it would be worth something but there is only 1000 of these around so try testing on Ebay put a reserve on so you don't get a low price. try sending a post to a def leppard fan site start a bidding war. ;-)
I have a original Rick Allen drum stick and wouldn't think of selling it, Hold on to it you never know the whole band might turn out to be mutants from another planet then the price would really go up ;-)
Oh god!!! What is NWOBHM? Its all late 70's punk and rock (most of which I have never heard of) some 7" and some 12"

That's pathetic! What's the point of making a video of peoples bottoms whilst having a serious hair problem and trying to wear as little as possible. Get real! - It's not music unless you like Status Quo too! Modern bands like 'Arcade Fire' use orchestras, brass bands, choirs, church organs, classically trained musicians and devastating lyrics which in themself would warrant a best seller! Check out British sea power too.. the amount of research is enormous in their lyrics... check out Muse too - Matt Bellamy has a voice to die for

I developed a liking for it despite not liking leopard after playing brutal legend where this song is used to perfection in an awesome scene where you have to corral a bunch of 'headbangers' to defeat a demon.
If you're any fan of metal at all you HAVE to play brutal legend!

GrannyGranny 09-12-2009, 12:14 Alcoblog - you can't just say a band is rubbish because you don't like them. Its all subjective. And you don't need a lavish orchestra with classically trained muscisians to make good music. There are some excellent singer songwriters who just perform with the minimal possible backing eg. David Gray & KT Tunstall. Song lyrics don't always have deep meaning or a message either to make a great song.
I am itching to know....what did the Michael Jackson set go for??????

Of course I can say a band is rubbish because I don't like them.. It's my perogative! To me song lyrics have to have deep meaning... that's the whole point isn't it?... it's very similar to a painting! Each person to their own but I prefer music which is intelligently written (armageddon it is puerile!) Google BSP or Arcade fire and listen to their lyrics - so much work has gone into it and it has a meaning! :)
