We are located round the back of the building. Bomb disposal team have just arrived. Apparently taking no chances as sniffer dog reacted to package when sent.

It feels pretty damn good...but right now I'm a little worried about her safety and hoping that I'll still have a spouse by this evening!:help:

As for pictures...I'm afraid that most were taken on traditional cameras...there are a few on digital, but I'm not sure how I actually post them on the forum.

Update.

I've just been told by a fellow worker who has listened to the radio's that they have X-rayed the package to find out its a low risk bomb. Instead of having to blow it up they are going to open it by hand. They should be allowed back onto the floor in about 30mins.

Two packages found.

Bomb disposal unit attending to one and second response team coming up from Nottingham.

Good old PC Plum sat in our reception informing us of updates, also says no panic and should be over with in an hour.

Radio Hallam news just said the first package turned out to be a hoax which looked like a bomb but wasn't.

2nd package was investigated by sniffer dog and the dog froze twice while approaching the package (an aluminium case near a grit bin) and as a result they have called in the disposal experts.

Not sure how true it is, as Hallam is regularly wrong.

What controlled explosion? News just said second one was a hoax and they are currently getting fingerprints from the aluminium box.

EyeSpy
19-07-2005, 11:18
There was a controlled explosion, it is all over now and roads are open again. Spoke to the police who said they were analysing the box to see what it actually contained.

Foxxx
19-07-2005, 11:29
It just seems odd, because there was no mention of a controlled explosion on the news. If they had already exploded the box, how would they now be analysing it for fingerprints?

I'm confused!

Tony
19-07-2005, 11:35
I think that the 'wheelbarrow' that they use has a rifle on it that they fire into a package. The gunshot is the controlled explosion. I wouldn't think that a specifically targeted bullet would do that much damage.

I'm sure there will be somebody around here that knows much more about the process.

Well I heard at dinner that inside was a lighter and a pair of scissors. Don't know if this is true like. Everythings clear now anyway, although a few police have stayed around the roads are open. I couldn't find that present:( , did u get there first EyeSpy? What was it?!

I think that the gunshot takes out the detonator, which is in itself can be a small explosive and with that out of the way, you have disabled the bomb. May need to watch re-runs of Danger UXB to confirm this though!:)

I'm glad everything is fine there. It's my only source of news from Sheffield when something like this is going on! I saw some stuff on CNN that said there was rioting going off in England but they gave few details and I didn't see anything on the Internet so I'm not sure how much truth was in the news report.

i work on queen street and the office juniors werent allowed OUTSIDE our building and one woman who works with us wasnt allowed BACK IN the building.... They closed Queen Street off and the road down the side of hlw solicitors. I was scared! If it had happend yesterday I wouldnt have been bothered if the bomb had gone off because i was in a crappy mood yesterday.

I kept leaning out of our office window and saw the police and bomb squad walking around. We then heard some bloke shouting something (couldnt make out what he was saying) then we heard the BANG!

From what I know, the Army has two types of bomb unit, one part of the Royal Engineers and one part of the Royal Logistic Corps. The Royal Engineers bomb disposal experts work predominantly out on operations, and the explosives experts with the RLC deal with devices in Northen Ireland and Mainland Britain. AFAIK the police themselves do not have bomb disposal units.

Just find it scary that we are like 4th or 5th biggest city and our bomb helpers are like 40 minutes away :0( <gulp>

Lets hope its never needed again ... but unfortunately I doubt VERY much if this will be the end of all this :0(

Oh and FYI the security it airports is NO better than it was... at Manchester it aint anyways ;0( ... comforting!

Cheers for info and Tony. It seems to me that the term controlled explosion might be a bit OTT then. If it's a gunshot (which can be loud and make people jump) then explosion seems like the wrong word to use. It just creates panic. When you hear on the news there was a controlled explosion, it sounds serious, when in reality it's not on that scale. Controlled detonator removal doesn't sound as bad! I dunno, I just hate scaremongering, which is why I asked the question, as I wanted to know what it was. Explosion to me implied the parcel is blown up which made me wonder how they would then get fingerprints!

Glad it was all a hoax and shows people are being very vigilant.

Did anyone see anything about this on the news last night?
I work on North Church street, and was hanging out the window to see that the police had cordoned off from Sola Bar downwards. I never heard any news on the Radio or TV though.

Was it definitely a hoax?

I understand one of the packages was spotted being left by an ununiformed parcel delivery driver - hence the scare.
