SYorksDeano 31-07-2009, 13:08 With a bit of luck all the chavs are going to have a party and someone is going to fill it in with them in it! HeadingNorth 31-07-2009, 13:15 I take it we're not talking about a particularly fine example of Potholea Sheffieldensis? I'm not sure I know where Northumberland Road is. SYorksDeano 31-07-2009, 13:17 Does anyone know whats that massive crater suppose to be on northumberland road? It started off as a pothole but you know what Streetforce are like with potholes :hihi::hihi::hihi: this_life 31-07-2009, 13:21 ........................................... HeadingNorth 31-07-2009, 13:23 Yeah, What *is* that? And why has it been there for so long? Great big holes in the ground that hang around for ages, are usually the result of a building that was started and then the money ran out before they'd got any further than digging the hole for the foundations. (I believe the huge pile of scrap near the bottom of the Moor is an example of this.) What building, in this case, I wouldn't have a clue. timcobbold 31-07-2009, 13:23 I believe the hole was dug without the relevant permission in advance of development. As a result the site was shut down. HeadingNorth 31-07-2009, 13:27 I believe the hole was dug without the relevant permission in advance of development. As a result the site was shut down. I hadn't thought of that; another good reason for large holes hanging around for ages. Would they not be required to fill it back in, though? Or maybe you don't need planning permission to dig a thundering great hole. timcobbold 31-07-2009, 13:30 Was told didn't go through the relative channels with regards to environmental or archaeological surveys. These are a legal obligation these days. this_life 31-07-2009, 13:56 .................................................. .......... fhardy 31-07-2009, 14:14 The hole is way too big to put foundations in so I asume they must be building something in the hole but then again i've haven't seen workman ever!! HeadingNorth 31-07-2009, 14:26 It's seriously enormous. Its next to Shef uni sports centre, Crookesmoor. It's worth seeing. Even if it was dug for a building. What kind of building could possibly need such a massive hole? Perhaps a large underground carpark .. the hospitals are up that end of town, are they not? (Is Crookesmoor the other side of the sports complex from Weston Park Hospital?) If building/environmental/doodah-watsit regulations were not satisfied, you're never likely to see a workman there either. Not unless and until the authorities decide to grant permission to finish building the whatever it is. this_life 31-07-2009, 14:30 .................................................. ........ qazitory 31-07-2009, 14:33 http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=northumberland+road+sheffield&sll=53.149495,0.339551&sspn=0.145778,0.308647&safe=active&ie=UTF8&ll=53.382527,-1.496834&spn=0.001133,0.002411&t=h&z=19&iwloc=A http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=northumberland+road+sheffield&sll=53.149495,0.339551&sspn=0.145778,0.308647&safe=active&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=53.382527,-1.496834&spn=0.004531,0.009645&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.382655,-1.497309&panoid=rUA-6kkkz2lB05WYS6mLyA&cbp=12,115.87,,0,5.2 Is this the one? LOL al_partridge 31-07-2009, 14:49 If it's been abandoned, they've forgotten to take their mechanical digger truck thing (technical term) away, must be worth a fortune yet it seems to have been sat there for months. WallBuilder 31-07-2009, 14:59 When they built the arts tower they discovered as they dug the foundations old long forgotten mine workings and gaping chasms in the ground and so had to dig it out more and more before pumping in an awful lot of concrete, maybe this foundation hole has come across the same sort of problems. biotechpete 31-07-2009, 15:01 The site used to be a factory when I started at uni. I think it was British Glass. It was closed and there was a rumour that it had been bought by a certain well known (if not infamous) Sheffield person. I have been told that they had permission to build 8 flats on the site but started to build a much bigger block with an underground car park without going through the proper channels. Consequently the building was stopped and has been like that for about 4 years. I'm sure anyone who is more motivated than me could look at the planning history on the council website. this_life 31-07-2009, 15:10 When they built the arts tower they discovered as they dug the foundations old long forgotten mine workings and gaping chasms in the ground and so had to dig it out more and more before pumping in an awful lot of concrete, maybe this foundation hole has come across the same sort of problems. I do, although I'm aware that Hoover is a brand name that's been hijacked by the generic instrument. Is tannoy another such? I wouldn't have known that. And yes, it can lead to ludicrous inconsistencies such as "Which company makes that brand of JCB, then?" shefffy 31-07-2009, 15:19 i did warn my wife about haveing a curry and takeing dog for a walk am sure glad she didnt fart in house Ousetunes 31-07-2009, 15:23 No. A number of years ago (Three Degrees were on at the Fiesta) Northumberland Road was straight and level with its surroundings. Indeed, there were shiny railings on the southern side which overlooked Crookes Valley boating lake and it gave a most wonderful vista of folk spending their Saturday afternoons rowing - that is, with oars and not strangling each other - on the lake and youths fishing quietly on the banks. It was so level, DIYers and tradesmen in the region used to check their spirit levels by it. But then it started to bow, that is, sink in the middle and over the next two decades and with the increase in students walking and driving and drinking along it, it got worse and worse. Typically, our council was not prepared to mend the problem, ticking it off as 'just another pot hole' on its list of 'to-dos'. The road is now like a BMX or skateboard park, where one can jump off at one end and speed down to the opposite end without the need to pedal or push. It's become an attraction in its own right. But the council is not keen on this, classing the road as a rat-run so is in the process of putting some speed-humps, chicanes and red-lights along the stretch. Thinking this will deter everyone, there are posters going up in student accommodation and in their bars, which will be like a red rag to a (red?) bull. Sheffield will have a new attraction: Northumberland Road Dip. Cheaper than a day in Blackpool and probably not as smelly. wobblywill 31-07-2009, 15:43 Wasn't it Naseem Hamed |
