View Full Version : What's your favourite "Power Ballad"?

Deavon

We all know the sort of stuff I mean:

The Power Of Love by Jennifer Rush, Take My Breath Away by Berlin and The Final Countdown by Europe.

If you were inspired to light your Zippo and sway it was bound to be a hit power ballad. The songs had great lyrics and strong melody and were full of emotion!

Power Ballads were always about ill-fated love and were great for wallowing in self pity after being dumped!

What about: Just Died In Your Arms Tonight by Cutting Crew.

Any other favourites?

Bed of Roses (Def Leppard)?

My all time favourite (not sure if it's classed as a power ballard though) is Living in Electric Dreams by Phil Oakey and Georgio Moroda.

Heart had a big hit in the summer of 1987 with Alone.

It's not particularly a genre that I like, but I do like that Heart song, nice piano and great vocals.

And wonderful big hair - that video was on all the time in The Rising Sun, Nethergreen at the time.

Oh to be 18 again.

Sorry. Can I just establish what a power ballad is?

Surely it isn't Belinda Carlisle or Anastasia?

We are talking the full, denim-clad, mullet wearing, thong sporting, air-guitar playing, monty!

ie

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

(Bonnie Tyler)

Sister Christian-Night Ranger

Home Sweet Home-Motley Crue

Coming Home-Cinderella

Lights-Journey

Lights

When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
I want to be there in my city
Ooh, ooh

So you think you’re lonely
Well my friend I’m lonely too
I want to get back to my city by the bay
Ooh, ooh

It’s sad, oh there’s been mornings out on the road without you,
Without your charms,
Ooh, my, my, my

This song was oh so cheesy, but it was written about San Francisco, my hometown, and was played constantly by Bay Area radio stations.

power ballad is surely defined as a love song by a rock band/person, with a really powerful voice, which when it comes on makes you sing along to it at the top of your voice, overacting to the words and playing air guitar at the appropriate point.

:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

From h2g2:

Air Guitar
An involuntary spasm in members of the male sex, brought on by the sound of Led Zeppelin albums. The practice of air guitar often happens in front of mirrors, and frequently with an accompanying tennis racquet (though cricket bats are generally preferred for bass riffs). Long hair adds considerable impetus to the performance of air guitar, and the entire industry of Heavy Metal has grown from its suitability for stadium-wide air guitar apoplexy.

Being caught in the act of playing air guitar is considered embarrassing, probably because there is no explanation for the actions involved that would not make things considerably worse.

Companion ailments include the air drum roll, which has to be executed with finesse, especially in a crowd; the air saxophone solo, which went through a brief period of acceptability in the early 1980s before being deemed embarrassing along with 'Careless Whisper'; the air keyboard, which lost popularity after a disastrous attempt to combine the keyboard and the guitar resulted in an instrument that let keyboard players get out from behind their instruments and to the front of the stage, leaving fans with images they'd rather forget; and finally the air Walkman, in which headphone-clad sufferers find themselves accidentally playing the introduction to 'Stairway to Heaven' in front of complete strangers on the London Underground, none of whom can hear the track.

This is related to, but not the same as, singing along loudly to your car stereo in a traffic jam.

You also have to jerk your head about as you sing to show the effort it is taking to get the well meaning words out of your mouth. It helps to have a fine head of hair. Michael Bolton has suffered since he removed his rat tail locks.

Let's have it in the original East Anglian dialect timo. Allan Smethurst's sole chart hit is more correctly known as "Hev Yew Gotta Loight Bor?" ;)

As for Val, I always feel "Paddy McGinty's Goat" is more representative of his neo-psychedelic work

Isn't there a line in Smethurst's song which goes, 'and she's my little nicotine gal' ? I seem to recall this from my youth. If either of you coves has the lyrics I would be delighted. We'd be ruining the thread. But I'd be delighted...

On some programme about TV ads the other week they said they just made the band (stiltskin) up after they'd made the advert cos they had this music on the ad that was just intended as backing track and then they realised there was demand for a single, so the guys that did it got a group together and some lyrics for it!

maybe Babylon Zoo was created for the same reason (unfortunately I don't think they were)

Can you give us a definitive definition?

I always picture power ballads to be sung by powerful women with big hair and horse like thighs.

However there was 'She's like the wind' from Dirty Dancing. Was that sung by Patrick Swazye???

That probably counts, I define a power ballad as anything that requires you to clench your fists and/or screw up your eyes while you sing.
Bonus points if you fling yourself about too......

I think that is the problem, it is hard to define. However I wouldn't class GnR Paradise City or Sweet Child O' Mine as power ballards. Nor would I class Summer of 69 as a power ballard, that is more like a "good time" tune.

Remember they still need to be "ballards".

I love Kaleigh, but the instrumentation and overall feel is more prog/folk (in the style of Jethro Tull) than your regular power ballad has any right to be.

There's some decent tracks on this thread. You closet rockers, you!

OK, I could list half of the database of my disco, but won't bore you all.

The first ones that spring to mind are:

Don't pray for me - Little Angels (I doubt if many of you will know them, but Brownie points if you do)

Pretty much ANY Journey track, masters of the power ballads.

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

Don't Fade Away - Coverdale

The latter two are probably not quite in the 'power' of power ballads but are damn good rock ballads anyway. I'll resist the urge to start a thread about softer rock ballads.

Ah, Deavon, lighting your Zippo to a power ballad about ill-fated love. There is one song (well, it's two actually) with great lyrics, a strong melody and just aching with raw emotion that fits the bill. Cast your mind back to 1976, and that final scene in the remake of A Star Is Born (Theme tune: Evergreen), following the death of Kris Kristofferson. Barbra Streisand is alone on the stage, and as the audience in the film actually do light up their Zippos, she quietly begins singing that memorable torch song - With One More Look at You. Streisand sings with a mixture of pathos and anger, and effortlessly blends the song into a reprise of Watch Closely Now.

Get your hankie out......

With one more look at you
I could learn to tame the clouds and let the sun shine through
Leave a troubled past and I might start anew
I'll solve the mysteries if you're the prize
Refresh these tired eyes
With one more look at you I might overcome the anger
That I've learned to know
Find a peace of mind I lost so long ago
Your gentle touch has made me strong again
And I belong again
For when you look at me
I'm everything and more that I had dreamed I'd be
My spirit feels a promise
I won't be alone
We'll love and live more, love and live forever
With one more look at you
I'd learn to change the stars
And change our fortunes too
I'd have the constellations point your portrait too
So all the world might share this wondrous sight
The world could end each night
With one more look at you
With one more look at you
I want one more look at you.....
Are you watching me now?
Watch closely now
Your eyes are like fingers
Touching my body
Arousing me so
I'm riding the passion arising inside me
How high can I go?
You're comin' with me: I'm gonna show you how
And when it's scary, I won't look down
Are you watching me now?
Watch closely now
I see the hunger arise in your eyes
And it's urging me on
Higher and harder and it's faster and farther
Than I've ever gone
Your pleasure is part of the secret
Of flight that I found
When I feel like on eagle
My soul has no place on the ground
Born out of madness
I'll double the danger with no net at all,
If you don’t look away I'm secure
In the fact that you won't let me fall
Watch closely now
Are you watching me now?
I'm the master magician
Who'll help you escape
From the lies you've been told
When they're breaking your back
Bring the last straw to me
I turn straw into gold
I break chains made of boredom
That others have lived with for years
I leave good news on doorsteps
And laughs where there used to be tears
I'm gonna need you later
When you're not around
But I can take it
I won't look down
Watch closely now
Are you watching me now?
Watch me now
Are you watching me now?
Are you watching me now?

And by the time Barbra gets to these words of ill-fated love-

"I'm gonna need you later
When you're not around"

.....I can no longer contain that lump in my throat.

I love power ballads. How about 'China in Your Hand' by T'Pau, which also has the obligatory saxophone solo. For me though, the pinnacle of 80s power ballad bombast has got to be 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' by Bonnie Tyler. The video is pure class. Oh, and watch the opening minutes of 'Urban Legend'. You'll never think of the lyrics in quite the same way again...

Holding out for a Hero - but then again, I am a freaky Footloose fan.

There's nothing wrong with that BoroughGal!

I'd have to say Waiting for a girl like you by Foreigner for the very same reason. I was gutted when it wasn't on the OST.

I also like:
If you leave me now Chicago.
Without you Neilson.
Total Eclipse of the Heart Bonnie Tyler.
Macarthur park Can't remember who by.
Evergreen and woman in love. Barbara Streisand.

Someone mentioned don't fear the reaper - dunno if I'd have classed that in this category.

This is my least favourite sort of music but there are odd ones i like.

The sad tosser on the floor below me favours Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler.

Thats when he's not inflicting I Will Do Anything For Love by Meatloaf on me or Heaven is a Place on Earth by Belinda Carlisle

No wonder his wife left him :hihi:

What a band Little Angels were and what a voice Toby had, shame they didn't carry on:headbang:

Comfortably Numb = finest song ever ever made not counting the Scissor Sisters abomination:thumbsup:

*anything* by Journey.

In fact, Steve Perry singing (even speaking) alone, could quite easily be considered a power ballad!

Me and my mate went to New York and got blotto in some Irish bar.

On the way home we stumbled into a karaoke bar. It was full of Japanese business men and high-class hookers.

They were all a bit suprised when we got up on stage a did a very dodgy rendition of "Nothings gonna stop us now" by Starship.

They were soon into though and some of the suits and whores were up on stage with us singing backing vocals.

Proper rayt laugh it was.

Ever since then it's been one of my favourite songs ever.

Bed of Roses (Def Leppard)?

My all time favourite (not sure if it's classed as a power ballard though) is Living in Electric Dreams by Phil Oakey and Georgio Moroda.

Oooops, forgot to include: Meatloaf - you took the words right out of my mouth .... and ... Paradise by the dashboard lights

Hels,
none of those songs are power ballads.

Ahhh a love in, I wouldn't describe church of your heart or vulnerable as 'power ballads' though.

Hmmmm..... must take a Roxette CD to work today I think...

They're ballads just not 'power' ballads. They're gentle rather than 'oomphy'
