Just moved to Sheffield. Partner of cryinglion for those of you who are website regulars.

Looking for a good "dim sum" restaurant and also wanting to know if there are any good restaurants that do "chaat" or am I going to have to keep going to Bradford or Leicester?!

Look no further than the highly recommended, conveniently named 'Dim Sum' on London Road, just down from Highfield Library in the town direction. It's been recently refrubished and I think the food is excellent.

The Golden Dragon (I think it's called) on a side street near Woolies (off the Moor) does a really excellent Dim Sum menu.
You could also, Mao's on London Road - i'd recommend either of them.

Not sure about Chaat though?

A friend who spent a lot of time in Hong Kong used to take us to Xing Vaa for Dim Sum at Sunday lunch time - it is full of Chinese people at that time and seems to provide a good variety of stuff

Haven't been for a while so can't say if it is still good

The Golden Dragon does great Dim Sum - its always busy on sunday lunchtimes. Try the Ducks Tongues! :thumbsup:

Well I don't know if they've established a completely new menu, but I went there a few months ago and was very disappointed. For a restaurant calling itself Dim Sum, there was a remarkable lack of it to choose from.

For sheer diversity of dishes and that authentic "chaat" feel, head down to The Golden Dragon on a sunday. IMO it's as good as a lot of the restaurants in London's Soho.

They are one and the same thing. Kind of like a Chinese Tapas usually reserved for lunchtimes. Lots of mini dumplings, spare ribs, wontons, and more exotic stuff like prawn rice rolls, pork buns and turnip paste. Really good experience if you haven't tried it.

The volume of customers mean that everything is coming out freshly cooked and virtually the whole DimSum menu will go past you on a trolley at some stage for you to look at and choose from.

Once at your table, just get your cold drinks and a pot of Chinese tea and wait for the trolleys to pass you. I would avoid ordering any extra rice or noodles off the menu until you have gauged how fast you are eating the dim sum.
When you choose something from the trolley, the waiter/waitress will mark it off on a card on your table for adding up later.
Some portions may come as 2 or 3 pieces so, as is often is the case, the more people that are on the table then the more opportunity for sharing and sampling.

Don't go if you are in a hurry. Enjoy a relaxed, slow lunch.
Make sure you book ahead/go early on celebration days (mothers day etc.)


Going at other times requires you to make choices from the menu which can be a bit restricting if you are not sure what is what.

Went and had a look today and "Yes. It's true!"

There is a bailiff's notice on the door saying that they have taken possession on behalf of the landlord.

I feel like I've been dumped...:cry:
