I have to say I was surprised to read this interview with BL concerning the fitness levels of JJ.

I don’t think Managers should be making such a clear point of criticising one player in isolation, and I do have concerns over whether or not his general comments about the Jamaican nation could be classed as Racist.

I’ve never fully understood what is and isn’t Racist, but surely implying that a nation of people are lazy is fairly close to a lot of peoples definitions and in these times when we should be kicking it out of football should he be saying such things.

What do others think, are these public comments justified and could they be construed as Racist?

“Johnson is fitness doubt for Owls

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Jermaine Johnson faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the season.

The 29-year-old has just returned from Jamaica international duty but is not as fit as the rest of the squad, boss Brian Laws told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"They've been playing games but his fitness levels compared to everyone else are comparatively low so we've got to up the tempo with him," Laws said.

"We'll address that and get him ready for the Barnsley game."

The Wednesday boss is not surprised that Johnson's fitness has dropped despite playing matches for his country.

"As I feared they're a very laid-back nation who don't really excel themselves as they should do," he said.

"Looking at his stats he's had more than a week off mentally and physically while he was out there."

i dont think its racist, i think he's stating a fact which is the jamaican national team are laid back and dont excel when training which any manager of a club would expect from a player, and JJ fell into a training routine which has caused his fitness to fall below his fellow owls teamates.

Having been to Jamaica, Bahamas, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic etc there is nothing wrong with that comment.
They are a very laid back nation but,he could have maybe done without putting "who don't really excel themselves as they should do,"
I mean looks whos the fastest man in the world right now :hihi::hihi:

It's not racist, stereotypical at most, although it does explain why that lazy so and so Usain Bolt can only be bothered to run for 9 and a half seconds instead of having a proper run like Coe, Ovett and Elliott used to.

Racist it is probably not , stupid definatly.

They are a laid back nation, as is most of the Caribbean.

My friend from Trinidad always points out that the British rush around too much (more so down south) - so in your terms is that racist to white people in Britain?

There about as racist as saying the English like queuing or the French like gesticulating. It is a cultural observation.

Exactly. Racism is widely misunderstood. People say criticism of a religion is racist, which is utterly untrue. Derogatory Race, nationality and religous views seem to be deemed under 'racism' which two of them aren't.

But it's not a racist comment. Not even a derogatory comment about the nation. They accept they're laid back, just as the british are miserable gits :D

I agree totally that's why I was trying to explain to benny that only a moron with .5 of a brain cell could see anything racist in it and the only thing that laws is guilty off is stupidity for saying something that could be interpreted by that moron

I personally don't see anything racist in the op's post from BL

but why was it stupid ?

have we now got to the stage in this country where we cant make comments about people from another country without the PC brigade jumping up and down playing the race card?

It was stupid because it allowed brain dead morons the chance to jump in with the racist card

IN case you hadn't noticed it wasn't one of the PC brigade but one of your own who brought it up and I reiterate as no one agrees with the op why not close it as no further information can be gleamed from carrying it on
