View Full Version : Looking for a good (cheap) DJ - any suggestions
kazisindahouse 18-07-2005, 20:07 Am 40 in November (aaahhh) and am looking for a DJ for the old birthday bash!
Ideally I want someone who plays a good cross section of music but that is also cheap.
Anyone got any suggestions please?
80 quid is about the going rate.
kazisindahouse 19-07-2005, 07:56 Looking for this DJ for a Saturday night ... would it still be about £80?

Contact Classic Rock if you like rock music
sheffbag 19-07-2005, 12:07 Wheres the venue at? Do they have a resident, How much do they charge?
Sorry Kirky but if you charge 80 for a disco at a private venue then you are way undercutting. If its 80 to dj using someones equipment then not too bad.
kazisindahouse 19-07-2005, 12:24 Not got a venue as such yet but have two in mind. One has the lights but no DJ equipment the other has nothing but a stage.
You mention Kirky's figure is way under cutting, what is the going rate then for a DJ on a Saturday night?

well i work saturdays nights and i charge 80 quid,as i do for fridays and sundays unfortunatley i already work every fri sat sun but one of the pubs i work in as a nice function room thats holds 150 people (S13 area) as for me under pricing myself i think just over 25 quid an hour is quite sufficient how can anyone say it isn't....ive been doing it nearly 16 years and am quite happy wity what i get paid:thumbsup:
The average fee is aprox £150 Depending on where the venue is.
Yes you can get cheaper, it's like buying a car, you get what you pay for :)
Also Residency fee's differ from one off functions
sheffbag 19-07-2005, 15:32 Kirky is the 80 quid for a residency in a venue?
I charge 100 a night and dont run a mobile (too much hassle) but i work occassionally at hotels for other dj's and they charge between 140-170 depending on venue.

yeah it is residency mate and i don't have to lug my gear about as it stays in both pubs (i have two set ups) so i see where your commin from i.e. travel and carting the equipment about,to me its a paid hobby i enjoy doin it and am lucky enough to get paid for summat i enjoy.
sheffbag 19-07-2005, 15:49 thats the great thing about djing, we get paid to do a job we love, i'd do it for free but dont tell bosses!
In answer to original question i would budget 130-150 depending on your venue and how much gear they would need.
if you get quoted below 100 for a one off then steer clear.
Where you resident now kirky?

jokin aside though both boozers have reputations they don't deserve,if i thought my equipment (or myself for that matter) were at risk i wouldn't do it.

I now cover Saturday nights at the Richmond for Kirky and the Monk when needed.
Kirky is correct in saying they have reputations they dont deserve.
I have never had any kind of hassle while I have been there.
I think for a function the £100 figure is about right for a mobile disco untill midnight. As Kirky says more than that is a bit of a rip off,
Corporate functions and late night events are charged out at a higher rate by me but again it relates to how much gear is to be carried in and out, the light show and the effort that the presenter will put in.
We know that some agencies and larger disco suppliers charge jobs out at £150 and up to £300. but how much does the man(or woman ) behind the cd machines collect. Yes agents are entitled to a commision and they are the ones whos name and reputation are on the line if it all goes pear shaped, but some of them in the past have really stuiffed mobile DJ's and some still do.
Been there, done it, got the silly shirt !
