It was always referred to as a "bread-and-fat shop" and they never paid well but it provided a lot of jobs for local people - at least whilst the McGees were involved. It's a shame to see it torn down but that's the way most of British industry has gone - thanks to bad governance and useless self-serving politicians. whitewitch 31-07-2009, 08:20 Apparently they are not pulling it all down, just trying to downsize the building, so they dont have to pay too much tax on it, the warehouse is still going with people working there, OH had a walk around it the other day. lynblu 31-07-2009, 08:46 Ah, end of an era :( my grandad worked there for years. Bonj 29-12-2009, 09:58 Dad worked there from the early 60's until his retirement in 1985 - Arthur Birkett - He's 89 now and still going strong. I think he enjoyed his time there; he often talks about it anyway. www.birkett.yolasite.com for 'First Job' a tale of crime in 70's Sheffield stagecoach 02-01-2010, 09:39 this company was forced into the ground by people who ran it.
