Hi my fiance has finally given in and has said I can have a rabbit. YAY! I am looking to rescue a rabbit. The younger the better as I will be providing a lifelong home. I have an outdoor hutch all set up with a large run. So now all I need is the rabbit and some rabbit food :)

If anyone can help please let me know

Oh please, please make sure you get more than one. Rabbits really do thrive on company, especially if it's not going to be a house rabbit. (Even rabbits spending a lot of time in human company need a rabbit buddy really).

There are some lovely rabbits available in rescue, often in pairs - take a look at rabbit rehome and Barnsley Animal Rescue often have them in too.

Graves Park usually has bunnies. Every time we go up I want to take them all home. OH says I got enough with 3 house bunnies at the moment.

I dont want to buy from a pet shop due to past experiences. i am going to see Helenasq from here tonight. Hopefully she can sort me out as she has a few lops available.

How old do they have to be before they can have their 1st injections?
What food would you recommend?
Im geting house rabbits so can they drink from a bowl like cats and dogs? Or will they need a water bottle?

I think I am right in thinking that rabbits cannot lap like dogs and cats can so will always need a water bottle.

Get some decent food like Wagg, the pellets type, not the stuff that looks like it has bits of dried veg in it as they often pick out the bits they want and don't eat the bits that have all the goodness in them. Helen will advise you anyway. It will be better to keep them on the food they have been having for now and gradually change it if you want to.

I am not sure how old they need to be before they can have their jabs, but it is advisable to have myxi done in September and then again in March, this then makes sure the vaccine is well into their system in the summer to cover the worst period. (My vet advised this). You only have to vaccinate for HVD once a year, but this cannot be done at the same time as myxi, you have to wait a few weeks, but the vets will advise.

Water Bottles are better as they end up knocking the bowls over or throwing them around as my past bunnies have done.

Rabbits can drink from a bowl but its better from a bottle as you tall how much they are drinking.

Wagg seems to be a really good pelleted food.

Go for pellets rather than the brunch type as it means they can't selectively feed - and they are the rabbit equivalent of sugary cereals.

LOTS AND LOTS of hay!

We're advised to make sure they are vaccinated at the start of spring when the diseases are at their most prevalent and therefore the the closer to that point, the better it is for them.

Worming 3-4 times a year (that is always fun!)

And a friend for the bunny - rabbits are very rabbity people and it doesn't matter how good a friend you are to the bunny, you'll never be as good as another bunny.

So as for rabbit insurance is it worth it? Iv heard that vet bills for a rabbit are equivalent to that of a cat/dog. They arnt classed as a small animal. Ive had a quote from pet plan £9.58pm

Not yet Teeny. I've got an unexpected litter of rex crosses from my NEUTERED male rex. He was done when I adopted him earlier this year(feb/march time), so he's off to the vets for a check up tomorrow to see what went wrong. Mind you I have to say they are the most adorable baby bunnies I have ever seen.

I love rex's.
I have called her Poppy. She is loving exploring her new surroundings. And I didnt think rabbits could move so fast lol. I hope she doesn't become destructive as I really want to keep her indoors. I'll post some pics later.

With regards to drinking out of a bowl in the lounge she can but her droopy ears get wet lol so I think a bottle is in order

Aww she is so cute. Iv been getting loads of bunny kisses. And as small as she is shes already learnt how to jump up on the settee. Been round the room squirting everything with Chew Stoppa just in case.

I've had house rabbits for over 15 years and they only thing any of them ever chewed are my toes or socks, but the latest 3 have a tendency for my OH's trainers (they can't have a sense of smell).

I must have had very odd bunnies not to chew.

One dutch (Trackie) I had used to scratch at the back door to be let out in the garden so he could do his business out there. I'm sure he was a dog in his previous life.

Got her insured now. £10pm. That includes 2 months free. You never know what is gunn happen with a house rabbit and a 14month old child. She could accidently drop summet on her or anything so i thought its better to be safe than sorry. Also on a good note she has started using her litter tray. YAY! she had a few accidents on me when she jumps on the settee. I think she thinks im a litter tray sometimes
