Thoughts?

Me for one dont mind if they seek work etc. But not those who very willingly stand outside the peace gardens outside somerfield all day doing nothing with a brand new phone and trainers. Please.

I met two Albanian refugees at a BBQ on Sunday. They had escaped communist persecution some years ago now. The couple told me how they had been made welcome in Sheffield, and how grateful they were for the warm reception and help they had received. They have both learnt English, never having spoken a word before they escaped to England, have obtained good jobs, and have taken British nationality. A heart warming story of which Sheffielders can be proud.

As Robbie said, Asylum Seekers are not allowed to work and are given a very limited budget on which to live on while their case is being progressed (which can take forever as the Home Office is so slow). Personally I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt and make them welcome, and not just assume that they are bogus.

Personally we should throw the lot of them out of the country,bloody scroungers the lot of them.
The peace gardens used to be such a nice place till they got here,now its a place where the women feel they are being hassled all the time by these scroungers with nothing better to do .
This city would be much better without them here.

Oh but then you would say they are taking british jobs. What was the area like before these people (I'm not calling them foreigners, immigrants or asylum seekers because I don't know them, but I have seem them) congregated here?

Are women being hassled more now than before? I recall a very long thread about this recently.

These are valid questions. Don't just dismiss Roy's comments because of who and what he is.

I referred to two Albanian asylum seekers in my earlier post. Albanians - who are white. Why are you equating asylum seekers with non-whites (which you managed to mention 3 times in your post)? Why, for that matter, have you changed the topic from asylum seekers to immigrants?

I have no dislike for any person no matter what the colour of his/her skin, I do however take exception to being judged as stupid by someone who certainly seems to have an axe to grind with anyone who has a different skin colouring to theirs.

I can't believe we are seeing such comments made in this day and age, to make sweeping generalisations about black people in this country. Maybe Polish_lady you are unaware of why many immigrants from other commonwealth countries came to Britain in the first place? They came because we had a huge labour shortage. We have a labour shortage today as well. We have millions of white Britons sat on the dole unprepared to do the jobs that are out there. But we also have many immigrants, and descendants of immigrants who have a strong work ethic and are fully prepared to knuckle down to some hard work. Anyone who comes to this country from abroad on a Visa has no recourse to public funds, so cannot scrounge from the state. Perhaps your racist views come from being a citizen of a country that is almost 100% white?

depends if theyre decent people like the rest then yes, if theyre scum like plenty of white english people aswell then no

Its not right and something needs to be done about it.

As a Sheffield woman I can't say I have ever noticed anyone hanging around the peace gardens making me uncomfortable, let alone anyone who appears to be an asylum seeker, and I have never heard anyone I know comment about this either. But then I suppose we all see what we want to see. I see a beautiful public space that people are enjoying (myself included - on a regular basis).

Every country that fought against the Nazis had their run of collaborators - the UK included.

Poland gave this country a great advantage against teh germans before WW2 kicked off properly by helping us get hold of ENIGMA information that led to us breaking codes. Poles fought with the allies, and were hung out to dry by the Russians who disliked the idea of a free Poland after the War.

We apply judgement as to what threads and posts are overtly racist, and we remove more than you are probably aware of.

There is a thin line to be drawn between removing something because it's racist, and removing something because it doesn't agree with a particular political view.

'We all know what is going to happen' - yes, people get to name calling rather than arguing the politics. I have banned people from the forum for racist comments, inciting hatred, name calling, the lot - and I will ban people form both sides of the political divide.

You may disagree with something; fine. Report it. But we will not allow the 'it's racist' chant to be used to stop people posting. By allowing people to post their beliefs, people on this forum can make their own judgements as to the sanity or otherwise of the policies of political movements.

Should Sheffield welcome asylum seekers with open arms?

I'd much rather someone with a genuine aslyum claim was welcomed to Britain rather than face persecution torture etc.

I'd disagree with the way asylum claims are dealt with, I'm sure things would be a lot simpler if they were processed much more quickly.

I think that when there is a genuine threat to these people from an intolerable regime then yes. I think if I was to become persecuted for expressing my thoughts or feelings, I'd try and skip the country. People are people, regardless of the colour of their skin or religion and people deserve all the human rights they are born with to be respected.


On another note, If people from anywhere want to come and work, then let them in as well. Many of the immigrants who want to become citizens of this country are more proud of it than we are, and many people do genuinely come to work here and work damn hard. I'm not talking about "non-white" (I hate that phrase) immigrants either, people from anywhere in the world. As said before in this thread, there are plently enough jobs to go around, especially in key public service areas, such as the buses who are forever advertising and in the NHS. Teaching is also a profession which is serverly under-staffed in many areas. The world has always had immigration, why the scrutiny now?

Fair enough, there may be some asylum seekers who take advantage of a soft system, but is it only their fault? And also, there are many "spongers" who couldn't be anymore British/English if they tried, can we deport these? Tax scams, false disability claims and spawning children just to receive a council house. Being pregnant seems to be a career choice for some girls these days.

Still then most of them do not want to work as they are too busy enjoying 'free Britain',living off the taxpayer.

This is a difficult call for the Mods. If the purpose of such threads is to argue politics - then can we have the politics thread back please?

I can't begin to imagine what overtly racist posts you remove, not when I see posts on this thread such as this.....

Whilst I don't mind be called a leftie, I do object to my fellow citizens being castigated as "blacks and the rest" and reading "blacks who do nothing". It is pure, unadulterated, vile racism. It contributes nothing to the debate. The topic under discussion has been reduced to a racist rant, and asylum seekers, immigrants and refugees are now simply referred to by the colour of their skin, i.e., "blacks", or by insults, i.e., "bloody scroungers", and, as we have seen in other threads "scum", and similar. This isn't civilised debating, and consequently, I feel it diminishes the quality status of the forum.

As I said, this must be a difficult call for the Mods. But if these threads all deteriorate into name-calling, insults and bans, then isn't there some merit in just closing down the aslyum seekers debate, the immigrants debate, and the refugees debate (in all their many guises) as happened with the politics threads?

I know and work alongside black and Asian people. I am dismayed that the diatribe, invective and overt racism of people like royjames and polish_lady continues to be allowed. Have not the racists exposed themselves to sufficient endless ridicule?
