Hello,

I'm new to this area I'm living in Rotherham and Im looking for a local vet that deals with rats. Can anyone recommend theirs?

I don't mind travelling too much but would prefer someone more local as I don't drive.

My rat is getting quite old now and he's got had a tumour for a while now my last vet told me to leave him because it wasn't affecting his eating or drinking but lately I think things are getting too much for him. I think it might be the time to let him go :(

Can someone give me a rough idea on prices and any vets that put them to sleep humanely rather than just sticking a needle in.

Thanks

I know Broomhill are very good with small furries and I have a friend who is very happy with the care her ratties have received there :)

They genuinely care and are very compassionate - I had to have a cat pts there a few months ago and they were great with her, and me.

Thanks everyone, Much appreciated.

He's lost the use of his back legs now and he's not eating or drinking so I'm going to see if they can fit me in first thing this morning :( He's sat snuggled up in my hoody right now. I'm going to be a complete mess when he goes he was my first real pet and he's hardly ever away from me so having him go will be like losing a part of me :(. I know it must sound stupid to some people as he's a rat but he's such a loving little character.

I'm going to try Springfield vets as they are closer and I don't think he will feel like going far on a bumpy bus.

I will keep Broomhill in mind for any future rats though, thanks again

Hi Lexi - sounds like it could be HLD (Hind leg dengeration), it's quite common in older gentleman rats unfortunately. This stuff is brilliant though - it's for dogs, but tastes yummy so rats enjoy it too and it really can help with HLD. You can get it over the counter or online here: http://www.ratwarehouse.com/shop_detail.php?item=362&cat=11

Good luck with your little man

Thank you everyone.

The vet at springfield agreed that it was his time to go and was the kindest thing so he's been put at rest now. He looked so peaceful once it was over which kind of helped. He's not looked like that in a few weeks.

The vet at Springfield was fantastic, I cant praise him enough. Very understanding and very gentle with him, He really put my mind at ease when it happened. I'm not sure of his name though.

I can understand your pain at letting your little ratty go and you do lose a part of you when they do go. I lost a piece of me every time one of mine went. But thank goodness I took lots of piccys and have lovely memories of them all. The memory of him will keep you going xxxxx
