Hi we are after either a cat or dog to join the family, ideally e'd like to get one from a rescue home or shelter. We went to the cat place at broomhall yesterday but there not keen for us to have one because we have children under 5 which seems silly, so can people tell me the best places to go or any advice?

Call RSPCA Barnsley - we are getting our kitten from Jackie and Julie and they are fab! Very accomodating. If you google RSPCA Barnsley, the number will be on there. Jackie and Julie have 4 litters of kittens for rehoming at the moment, and they are all adorable! We are picking our kitten up next Friday - can't wait.

It depends - some rescues are reluctant to home young pups or kittens to families with toddlers because younger children can be pretty boisterous and clumsy around small animals (yes I know that's a generalisation but when you've seen kittens being clasped by the neck and swung across the room you tend to get a bit wary of homing a fragile live young animal where there's a toddler.

Older cats (8-9months and upwards) are less spiky and more able to remove themselves when it gets a bit manic - so I'd suggest wherever you get your cat 9or dog) from, this is something to bear in mind. A lot depends on the temperament of the animal too - if s/he has come from a quiet home, a new life with a lively family might not be the best choice.

You could try http://catsprotectionshop.com/foradoption.aspx -scroll down the page, there are some older cats as well
