Am looking for a Fender Telecaster guitar (not a Squire imitation) for a decent price. Anyone know where in Sheffield. I know Sound Control can be a bit pricey but don't know any others.

Cheers

Both Sound Control and Academy of Sound (aka Carlsbro to these ears) specialise in new stock hence their sometimes hefty prices. You don't say whether you're a new guitar player, ie a beginner or whether you've played for a while. You also don't give an idea as to what you've got to spend.

If you mean a US Fender Strat then start saving as you'll be lucky to get much change from £1000. If you could make do with a Mexican Fender Strat, made under license in Mexico then I believe you could be looking at less than £500. And ofcause, the Squire Strat (which I believe is made in Japan?) is considerably less than that but if truth be told, you're not getting a great guitar despite the Fender endorsement.

I'm not a specialist in Fender guitars preferring Gibson (Les Pauls) which illustrates the difference between 'name' guitars and endorsed 'copies'. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul for around £450 which is a superb guitar. Unfortunately, the area where compromises are made happens to be in the electrics and after a year or so, the pick-up selector and volume/tone knobs have all gone to pot. My Gibson Les Paul however, is a different kettle of fish and my advice is this: Buy the best guitar you can afford (but obviously one you feel comfortable with and which is going to give YOU value for money).

One day I will be the proud owner of a Gretsch Country Gent. I might have to save the £3,500 required to get one, but believe me, I will have one!

Finally, if it IS a real US Fender Strat then you shouldn't go far wrong with a second hand one. Rarely do such guitars lose value and so why not buy Total Guitar and scan the personal ads?

Let me know how you go on.

If I were you I'd forget Sheffield, and get yourself to Electro Music in Donny, it's miles better than AoS, SC, Steel City, etc.

Nice one, cheers pal. Ive been playing for around 6 years, but started on an acoustic with a pick up. Ive always wanted to buy an electric but could never afford it and as you say I dont want to buy a cheap one that isnt very durable.

Ive been told fender telecasters (standard) are pretty much a safe bet as well as epiphones. Im looking to be around £200-£300, although I would love to buy a Rickenbacker 360! I have seen a tele for around £280 so might look at that but look in the shops first.

cheers

One of the nicest guitars I've ever played was a (copy) Telecaster. Its action was sublime and if I ever cross over to the likes of Fender, chances are I'd go for a Tele over a Strat. Admittedly, I'm not well-up on current prices but I know Fender brought out a new range of Teles (manufactured in Mexico but to a high spec; it got top billing in a Total Guitar review) with an asking price of around £500. You could get one with at least £100 off that.

I actually went to look at one in Sound Control and really liked it. It was a white model and looked really well but in the end I opted for the Les Paul (Epiphone).

I've also strummed a Rickenbacker or two. Whilst they are great looking guitars I didn't find them comfortable to play. The 360 - with its incredibly thin neck - isn't infact, an expensive guitar.

Get yourself into a shop, even if it is Sound Control, tell 'em what you'd like, how much money you've got and they will be able to help.

Remember, the staff there are musicians too and if they know you are a serious customer (ie, don't ask for the £7000 Gibson Gold Top) they should look after you. I've spent a lot of money in there and I haven't really bought any rubbish as yet (though some might argue I play enough rubbish....,).

Fenders vary in quality depending on where they are made

USA ---- Best
Japan
Mexico
Korea ---- Worst

Oh and avoid Fender "Squires"!

My friend has a Squire Telecaster and its lovely. The pick-ups are a bit cheap obviously but other than that its a really nice guitar.

Chris.

Just following a musical instrument related thread elsewhere, and there seems to be a rumour floating about of a guitar sale at Fox's Music, so you coud try there.

They've moved to their old premises opposite Debenhams. Apparently it's a bit smaller than the old one near castle market.

Sound Control (City Road) had some nice Tele's in the other day - about the £500 mark. Go have a look.
