Does anyone remember any of the old characters from Crookes, like ' string vest ' who I think was a grave digger ? always wore a string vest, flat cap and trousers with a larger leather belt. I think he used to drink in the 'Old Grindstone' before it was altered, or 'Magnum Harry' who frequented the Mad House on Lydgate Lane when ' Fixit ' was the landlord. Happy day's !

I remember String vest Ted too and lots of others. I used to knock around with a group of people they lovingly called " the Nutters of Crookes" There was one punk, a lecturer, a bald bloke, a hippy, a rocker and myself. We were so different but all of us got on so well. I was the only female of the group but was classed as an honorary lad.:)

shinyhappy68, I can remember a few of the old shops around Crookes, I think the shop you are referring to may have been ' Alcocks ' wool shop. There were four shops on Cross Lane, ' Prince's, Howcrofts,' and the other two I cant remember. I still live at Crookes, was born here 50 years ago, who knows one day I might leave.

No it wasn't on Crosslane, it was corner of Mulehouse and Tasker, opposite to Nirmal's Shop? I remember Princes though. I also remember Kandy Kabin, Patience Wall wool shop, Mrs Scotts Library, "spooky" place that was, Ballins, Leapers, that "posh" clothes shop where Casanova is now and The Joke Shop further over was where most of my spending money went...ha ha

I doubt it's the same person but there was a fella who looked and dressed like Harry H Corbett in Steptoe and Son, I used to see him a lot, he was always walking somewhere (I know everybody is, but he always gave the impression that he'd walked a very long way if that makes sense!).

I saw him a few times a couple of years back and he looked in a really bad way, using crutches really slowly. Sad, after how he used to be.

Watkinsons opposite Nirmals[/QUOTE]

Was Nirmals the cobblers that was on the corner of Mulehouse and Chichester Rd ?
My mother worked for Phylis Watkinson in the 40's, I think her daughter Ann took over that shop after she married.

The cobblers was Slack's, had a son called Robert - this would be in the 50's, but they were there for many years.

The fish shop man - I actually know a little more about the removal. A little kid ran out into the road from behind the "fish man" and was almost run over. A chap I know just popped in and told the fishmonger he though it was too close to the road. It then got blown out of all proportion with the fishmonger getting uppity and saying he had been told to shift it. He then got into some local press (may have been one of the political party's press release) and probably made it worse, as I think he may have then officially been told to remove it.

Just shifting it to the shop front side of the pavement would have probably solved it. Wonder where he is now though? Do you think he has pride of place in the old fishmongers front room? I hope so

A bloke called Bill Atkin was often drinking in the Sportsman, Crosspool on a Friday night. I think he was from Crookes. A lot of chaps from Crookes used to have an allotment on Marsh Lane, top of Stephen Hill Rd., Crosspool.

did anyone go to Crookes Baptist church on Mulehouse Rd?
I was in the Girl's Brigade and played a side drum. Most of my friends were in the band and obviously played a variety of instruments.
we marched down to Weston Park every Whit Monday. It was alright going down but strenuous coming back. We always felt sorry for the buglers.
I never did get to be May Queen what about you?

He was a great character.

Hi, yes my dad, now 94 years on St Thomas Road was a regular there and often comments upon what a great Landlord Ellis was, and seemimgly an afficianado on liver and bacon sandwiches which were regularly handed out by Ellis ;dad believes he was in the 8th army in the 2nd world war; he went from the Noah to the Paecock at Stannington

The " Noah" seems to have lost its way over the past couple of years and seems a sad reflection on past glories.

Landlady "Andria" had it back in 2006 n 7 and it was a welcoming place to be but current times are rather sad= hope that some one can bring it back to the joyous place it was.

She was called Winifred Cooper and "Winnie" as you rightly say, is what folks called her. I lived on School Road and remember her well. I recall she had quite a sharp tongue and was rather scary so I gave her a wide berth.
