i was wondering if anyone can help me, my parents have gone abroad for a week, they left their dog barney who is a yorkshire terrier with a good friend who barney knows and goes walking with regularly. The friend has had barney since wednesday and she phone me yesterday to say she was concerned about barney, he wasnt eating his food but he is drinking water, he hadnt passed a motion and was walking around with his tail down looking very sad for himself, she also said that she had took him on a 11 mile walk and that he was fine while he was out but he had deterieted on returning, i fetched him to mine as he is a regular visitor here and i have his mum. It is now 24 hrs later and he still cant be tempted with food he is drinking but has been sick 4 times and its just water that comes back sometimes frothy.

I cant decide whether he is missing his owners and is pineing for them, or whether he's eaten something while he was on the walk, or if he is ill, now i dont want to run mum and dad a big vet bill up as they are pensioners , so i wondered if anyone has got any advise as for something i can buy over the counter that may clear his system out (he was passing alot of smelly wind last nite).

you need to take him to a vets, he could have an obstruction which needs surgical intervention, peak vets in woodseats is open tomorrow and does emegency care.

Yup def sounds like he is blocked up.
Also even though he is drinking if he is being sick he could dehydrate so I would definately pop him to the vets as soon as you are able.

I'm not so sure about the blockage but 11 miles sounds an awfully long walk for a yorkie, I think that even mine would struggle with that.
I would imagine That he is quite stiff and sore and maybe a bit dehydrated, you know yourself if you exercise a lot you get a bellyache and don't want to eat....I may be totally wrong but that was the first thing that I picked up on.

I don't know that much about dogs but I'd have the sense not to take a Yorkie for an 11 mile walk, it's no wonder he's feeling ill.

Poor little mite have to agree 11 miles is an awfully long way, especially for a yorkie, and more so if he's not used to it if your mum and dad are pensioners I wouldn't imagine they take him for 11 miles.
He's probably exausted and it is very warm so could be a bit dehydrated, but I would definately let the vet check him over, just to be safe, its normal for dogs not to pooh.

Well to be fair some dogs can walk a really long way if they are fit but even so it does sound a bit far for a little un doesn't it.

11 miles is to far for a little yorkie , my sheltie would do that no problem but my King Charles no chance I wouldn't even try it with her.
In any case this little dog may need vets help please get him there ASAP

barney is regularly taken on long walks he is normally a very energitic boy so the distance wont have been a problem for him. He isnt a toy yorkie he is about the size of a poodle.

In the last hour he seems to have perked up a bit i took him for a short walk and he was sniffing about (which is something he wasnt doing earlier) and he has had a poo, which is the 1st in 2 days so maybe he will be ok.

We will see how he goes and if he is still not eating tomorrow i will phone the vets that the forum user said was open on a sunday at woodseats.

I could be totally wrong here but it sounds to me as if he's missing his mum and dad, My gsd is behaving in much the same way since we lost our other dog last week , fingers crossed for you i'm sure he'll be fine

If he's going to the toliet sounds like he's ok. My old dog was dreadful when left with my grandparents she would be sick, have a dodgy stomach and be miserable all the time she was there without us. She used to come back about 1/2 stone lighter with all her freting. She was never a dog that minded being left in the house but would react badly if left for more than a couple of days.

I would say that he is definitely missing his mum & dad - not eating and looking all sad. The 11 mile walk - have to agree with the other forumers - bit of a hike for a yorkie even if they are fit - and in the warm weather will have knocked him up a bit. My two are a Great Dane and a toy yorkie and if we were to walk 11 miles - Sooty (yorkie) would have to be carried for 10 of those :hihi: (Even bought one of those shoulder bags and he loves it - lays there like royalty) and Sophie would have to be carried 8 of them - or maybe picked up in the car - along with me of course :D

Good news took the dog to peak vets, he has got gastricintritis, thank god it was nt a blockage, the vet gave him a injection and i have to give him two medicines 3 times a day for 5 days. he perked up about a hour after the injection and even though he hasnt eaten anything as yet he is walking aroung with a dental stick in his mouth.

This is the same dog barney who i asked advice about at the weekend but he perked up a bit which the vet says isnt unusual, but he went downhill again today, but hopefully now that he has got medication he will get better, and his mum will be home thursday morning.

thanks for everyones help.

Glad he is fine. Dogs can be ok one minute then go downhill so quickly then be ok again  and it's even worse when your looking after someone else's dog! :)

he's sniffing dfood now so i think he will be ok he has only had one dose of the medicines so when he has got a 24 hour dose in him he might be alot better, and his tail isnt dragging on the floor.:hihi:
