Does anyone know if elderly guinea pigs sometimes go bald? I have a 5 year old guinea pig that has started lossing hair around her shoulders and back of her neck, ive tried invermectin and thats not made any difference so i dont think its mites and due to where the hair loss is she couldnt have done it herself as she cant reach.

Its not a massive amount of hair loss but you can see the hair gets a lot thinner and skin shows through. Shes not been doing any excessive scratching or biting and is totally healthy in herself.

I was just wondering if its something that can happen in oldies:confused:

It's not something I've come across with my oldies.

it can, but I would be inclined to bath them, and see how it goes. I have noticed that some batches of hay have brought nasties with them and some of my pigs have started losing coat but mainly on the belly.

I suggest either Fungi Klenz by Lincoln (made for horses) or Sporal D both can be bought from ebay, for around £10 each. It seems expensive but it really does work

I had this with one of my guinea's years ago, and I went down this route, until I got a call from the vets who had a nurse there who bred them, they said to bring her back in as hair loss can sometimes be caused by a uterine cyst.. they operated - it was and all her hair came back, had it not been for that nurse I'd probably have lost her.
