View Full Version : Growing up in Beighton
JuneLambert 23-07-2009, 19:07 Did any of you grow up in Beighton during the early 50's 60's? Did you go to Beighton infants / Juniors? Brookhouse Secondary modern? Do you remember any of the old shops in Beighton like the shoe repair shop on High street, or Mr Staniforth's clock and watch repairs next to Hall's television shop? What about the fairs that used to come to Beighton at the same time each year? The rides were 6d and one year me and my friend Marilyn Lancaser went potato picking to get some money for the fair - we finished up with 10/- Fantastic!! Loads of money to go on whatever we wanted!! Farrer's were one fairground family......they had been coming to Beighton for years. Did any of you go to the youth club in the church hall with Mr Durham? ........and the Saturday night dances which cost 6d or 1shilling if I remember rightly..in the church hall?
JuneLambert
was talking to one of my sisters last saturday, and she thinks she remembers you, we lived at Hackenthorpe and surname was Beatson?
Hi JuneLambert
Did you ever come across any of the Timmins family in Beighton?
PopT
I know the current owner of Farrar's Fairs who are still in business, they would love to come back to Beighton if someone could find them a suitable ground to put the fair on. Some of their rides are currentley open in Rother Valley.
JuneLambert 29-07-2009, 08:31 Hi Fixit4u,
The name Beatson does seem to ring a bell.........Did your sister go to any of the Beighton schools? My dad's family came from Hackenthorpe and I had friends from Hackenthorpe in my teens......early 60's

JuneLambert 29-07-2009, 08:32 Hi PopT

JuneLambert 29-07-2009, 08:37 Hi Escort1
I don't live in Beighton now, and I remember the fairs being on the recreation ground on High Street, where the Miner's Welfare / bowling green was built. There was such a buzz around the village when the fair was coming!! It was usually there for my birthday in August - when we din't have money to go on the rides we stood around the waltzer or dodgems eyeing up the lads. I can't think of space in Beighton now where a fair could be held but there might be.
JuneLambert
Hi JuneLambert
I'm sorry I'm not sure, they were living on Vicar Lane in the 1920's but told they had moved to somewhere in Beighton.
Arthur Timmins the father was a Pit Deputy at Beighton Colliery.
A bit of a longshot but I thought you may have known someone at the school.

Not the same buzz these days as the kids have too much other things to do, there was no Playstations etc when we were young. I remember the good old days at fairs that you talked about, today its usually kids with no money just messing about.
JuneLambert 29-07-2009, 14:00 Hi PopT,
I don't think I can remember a Timmins at school.. Memebers of my family would have known Mr Timmins the pit deputy though. Some of my dad's brothers worked at Brookhouse pit.
JuneLambert
There are 5 of us girls that were in the Beatson family. All except me all went to Rainbow Forge and Carterlodge. Their ages are 55, 59, 61 and 62. My 2 elder sisters both married lads from Beighton, one from Robin Lane and the other from Norcroft Cottages. The eldest divorced and remarried but the other is still married to 'Wag' from Norcroft. We lived at Carr Forge Close but my nan lived at Beighton, across from Norcroft Cottages.

JuneLambert 30-07-2009, 21:50 Hi fixit4u
Chances are I know your brothers in law then. I remember Norcroft Cottages well. I didn't know all the families who lived there but did know of some.
Did you know any of the Tann's from Hackenthorpe? They are my cousins on my dad's side of the family. Patrick, Kate and David Tann - or any of the Lamberts?
JuneLambert
Hi june, saw my sister yesterday and told her about this post, yes she remembers you well. She said you and her worked together, your first jobs together, her name is sheila, does it ring any bells? Also she says did one of your brothers used to live on Broadfield Road in sheffield?
JuneLambert 02-08-2009, 09:53 Hi fixit4u
Yes, I think I remember your sister. We worked at Shelley's bakery in Beighton after leaving school - our first jobs! I think one of my brothers did used to live on Broadfield Rd for a time.
JuneLambert
Hi june, my sister kath also remembers you and also her husband charlie. She says she also worked with you at your first job, she even had a photo of you all sat on a gate to have your picture taken. There was yourself, sheila and kath beatson and sheila craig, she says do you remember it?
JuneLambert 11-08-2009, 06:01 Hi fixit4u,
I can't say that I do remember the photo being taken. What is Charlie's second name....I may remember him too. Was he a Beighton lad? I'd love to have a copy of the photo. Do they still have it? Was it taken at Shelley's or somewhere else? Where did Sheila and Kath live when they were young? Did they live at the top end of Beighton? I do remember Sheila Craig.
Thanks
JUneLambert

June Lambert
Janus1938 02-10-2010, 10:54 I didn't live in Beighton, but around 1954 I was going-out with Margaret Wilson, a nurse in Sheffield. Her parents and sister lived in the very old cottages behind Beighton church. Margaret's father, Charles, was a miner at Beighton colliery. Later she went to Charing Cross Hospital, London. I last saw Margaret in London in 1956, but my RAF friend was nursed by her at RAF Uxbridge where she was a nursing-sister. I believe she married an Australian and went to live there
June Lambert, Hi, I see from one of your posts that you lived on Victoria Road. Do you remember a family, name of Paynter?
JuneLambert 04-10-2010, 18:20 Hi Texas,
The name Paynter rings a bell. We lived upstairs at I think no 49 - above Betty and Fred, The top one on the row of flats. My kids - Andrew and Rachel were young there - I think it would have been 1973 when we moved in and about 1976 when we moved to Cairns road next door to my mum. Did you live on Victoria road?
Best wishes
June Lambert
JuneLambert 04-10-2010, 18:24 Hi Janus1938,
I was only 7 in 1954, so I don't know Margaret Wilson. I'm not sure which old cottages you refer to at the back of Beighton Church. Are they the ones which are on High Street? Memebers of my family worked at Beighton Pit though and would have known Margaret's father.
Kind regards
June Lambert

Pulseroom 17-12-2010, 16:51 Hi all, I think some of you will remember me "Ian Williams". I lived on Woodhouse Lane. Beighton, what a great place to have been brought up, I have fond memories.
I have read some articles on other posts, June mentions Marilyn Lancaster, she was good friends with my sister Marilyn and still keep in touch. I still remember lot's of my old school buddies and keep in touch with some of them on friendsreunited.

Pulseroom 17-01-2011, 17:37 Anyone remember strarsmore shop on manvers road and the barbers opp the coop and there was turners shop as well on manvers road
Yes I had my hair cut at the barbers and I also remember the shops. My Dad drove a "sharrow" of Grant and McAllen’s, he used to take fishermen on Sundays very early in the morning and I used to sit on the engine that kept me warm on those freezing mornings. Fond memories.
Although I didn't live in Beighton, I did knew a family who did live there many many years ago and I would love to know as to whether any of them are still around. The family name was Whitehead and I think the address was Rosemary Road. The properties in the area at the time were all Prefabs. No doubt they are all gone now. I am going back perhaps fifty plus years. The young girl I knew at the time was Brenda whitehead who's mother I always addressed as Auntie Eva. There were brothers as I remember, Norman and I think George. There were other members in the family whose names evade me with the passing years. Brenda did kindly contact me in 1986 when my mother died but all contact has been lost since. Brenda always referred to my mother as Auntie Dot.
Funny just by browsing the Forum you can pick up a thread which evokes memories from way back !

Bade Turton was well known in Beighton, If you wanted a council house (before Yorkshire extended their boundary) when Beighton was still in Derbyshire, you used to go and see Bade at home to plead your case.

Beighton became part of Sheffield in 1967.
Bade worked at Beighton Colliery, later Brookhouse colliery for a total of 51 years. his son Jack worked there till it closed. Jack lived 3 doors down the street from my wife's family and her mother is Jack's sister Doreen. Mary, another sister, lived on Armstead road but now lives at Mosborough. Barbara, the youngest sister lives at Eckington. My wife's brother Peter is married to Ruth (nee Antcliffe) from Manvers road and she has a brother Mark.

With out going down I am guessing that no11 is the first of the flat topped coucil houses.
All the brick houses facing what is now the green baize club and those up Armstead to the council houses were knocked down way back why? haven't a clue. But assume it was considered slum clearance like those along bottom and up archard lane and Allen rd

I lived at 31 Allen Road next door lived the Grice's, on the block live the Burkinshaws, Powiss, Brockelhurst's, Whites.
The first councild house was the Froggatts, then the Blacks, Pearsons.
The two little lads who drowned lived on our block I think they were called Gulliver.
Also a girl call Woodhead [Joanne I think] was killed by a lorry on the top road when walking home from school, she lived on or near Armstead.
victormh 22-06-2011, 04:56 Good Afternoon from Malaysia - very hot and very sunny, as it is 365 days a year.
I was born in Swallownest in 1940 and lived there until 1967 when I moved to Driffield, near Bridlington, then in Nov 2006 to Malaysia
I spent a lot of time in Beighton, and as a teenager, down there on my motor cycle trying hard to chat up the girls.
We used to locate ourselves on "Beighton Prom", at the time we thought we were irresitable - ha ha ha - I was fortunate in that I did not have a "spotty face"
The main thing I remember about Beighton was of couse Joe Molinaris Ice Cream, made at the factory behind the number of houses he owned. His son Tommy was a good friend of my fathers, Tommy usually did their ice cream round in Swallownest - I have eaten ice cream around the world, but nothing compares with "Joes Ices".
Old Joe never learned to drive, he always had a horse and a cart which he sat in to both drive and serve. At the end of each tour around Woodhouse he usually went into the George Hotel. At throwing out time (10-00pm then) he would stumble to the cart, hit the horse, and the horse would go back to Beighton without Joe holding the reins. Momma Molinari would hear the horse come back and old Joe was usually carried into the house, then the horse put into the stable
Anyone else remember Joe Molinaris Ice Cream and Ice Cream Factory ??
Best Wishes to Beighton etc - Grey Eminence - Subang Jaya - near Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia

I was in Molinari's ice cream shop a couple of months ago.
spoke to Florence, who was serving in the shop, and she said her husband (who had his own name on his van as MacNeil) was OK considering his age.
the ice cream is still as good as ever.
bluesdudeo 23-06-2011, 22:34 I lived at 31 Allen Road next door lived the Grice's, on the block live the Burkinshaws, Powiss, Brockelhurst's, Whites.
I was in JOanne's class ...it was very sad, she was killed by a cement truck I think on Eckington Road,

GlassyGee 25-06-2011, 23:24 A friend just sent me this site. June, do you remember Jean Gill? She was my little sister and also a good friend of Marilyn Lancaster's. We grew up in Beighton, went to Brookhouse and were a members of the Youth Club. Mr Durham was wonderful, how he tolerated us gobby girls, I don't know. Jean and I were both on the Youth Club Netball Team.
Barry Durham and I were in the same class, he was a very nice person and a very good reader!! Hope he's doing well.
Umm, Molinaris(sp) Ice Cream...yummy!
emerson15 26-06-2011, 09:27 I grew up in Hackenthorpe and we used to walk to beighton to the youth club. A beighton boy gave me my first kiss, magic. Keith Havenhand I think his name was. Used to meet me with his friend in tow. I think I was about 14. I also walked to Woodhouse with my mum to have a tooth out and walked back afterwards. It must have been a few miles. Later a clinic opened in Hackenthorpe and the dentist there really was a butcher.
GlassyGee 26-06-2011, 13:37 Hi June
Yes I grew up in beighton during that time and remeber Sandra Lancaster. Some others from that time Daivd Fox mentioned I think one of the other posts, Malcolm fox (no relation) Linda Bishop, June Sargent, Pauline Adamson, Billy Jepson, Leslie Simmonite, Eric Fox, Tony Johnson lived in the OLD george and Dragon, Dave Grundill,Cedric Oates and many others.
'ello Mature 5011, I went to school with most of those kids you named. Linda 'Bishop' is still my BF! Beighton was a great place to grow up. Did you attend a 50th reunion in Mosborough? I left the UK in 1967 but try to go 'home' when I can. My mother still lives on Victoria road.
Sadly, several old school mates have since passed away; Maureen Turton, Sandra Lancaster and my dear friend Pat Clarke.
I don't know hardly anyone anymore and Beighton has changed so much-not for better. Do you remember Mr. Kirk, the geography teacher at Beighton School? I don't know how he survived us! We took every opportunity to disrupt class; he was such a pushover! Now I wish I had paid more attention instead of plotting how to avoid actual school work:(
It's nice to see familiar names up here, although we're all in our sixties and becoming more invisible to the younger generation. Are we the 'crinklies' now?

Did you know us? Marylin, Ann and Ian Williams of Woodhouse Lane? I remember Mr Kirk, Dogger Darker, Mr Hardy and his wife who used to teach English. Also remember the Shaws, Sandra and Susan, Frank Miles, The Hales family to name a few.

Lostrider 08-07-2011, 10:54 Photos of Beighton & Beighton Folk from the late 1940's.

Maybe some of you older ones might recognize someone. lol
GlassyGee 08-07-2011, 14:06 Sorry, I don't remember a 'Williams' family on Woodhouse lane, we lived on Sothall Green then Grange Road, when I was going to school. Did you know the Purdy's? Michael was in my class, a 'smashing lad', we could always count on him to stall the lesson by asking the teacher a plethora of questions. Mick emigrated to New Zealand, (via Australia, I think).
I didn't recognize any of the kids in the Old Beighton Photos, but did see some familiar places, especially the flooded road over the railway tracks.
We kids were 'drawn' to floods, all we needed was a pair of 'wellies' and a good excuse as to why we had to go out to play in the rain. The Ochre Dyke was another favourite. My sister actually fell in the swollen Dyke and was heading for a tangle of tree branches backed up at the entrance to a small bridge. The water was already running over the bridge at this point and she could have been trapped among the branches and debris. I ran on ahead of her and grabbed her coat collar as the strong current carried her downstream. Needless to say, mother was livid when we arrived home soaked to the skin. It didn't occur to me at the time, but the river Rother must have been one of the most polluted rivers in the UK! And we used to play in it.
Anybody out there with more 'Beighton' adventures?

Pulseroom 08-07-2011, 15:21 My dad used to drive for Grant and Mcallan, I used to go with him on Sunday morning fishing trips, and I used to sit on the engine in the front. If you’re older than me you may know my cousins, Trevor or Rita Williams. Had plenty of fun sledging on Walter’s field. Our house used to get flood water right up to our back door; we were 2nd house up from the bottom of Woodhouse Lane. I used to knock about with Cyril Wright, Adrian Cropper, Phill Cutts, Alan Wright amongst others. My favourite drinking hole was Royal Oak. Pint of tennants 1shilling and 10pence, I worked at Memories (Swallownest Brickworks with Phil Moore. OMG I could go on forever......
GlassyGee 08-07-2011, 18:58 Yeah, we were lucky to have grown up in a small village, although I didn't realize it at the time-especially when we missed the last bus and had to walk home!
Who didn't go to Cleethorpes on the Manvers Queen? (Did I get the name right?)
I remember some kids by the name of Cutts. A boy, older than me, gave me a lift home from Swallonest on the back of his motorcycle. I was dressed to kill, high heels, handbag, umbrella and even carrying an extra pair of shoes. I don't remember wearing a helmet-what a sight that must have been!
We would stop in the "Oak" after a netball game-oops, I may have been underage...
This was when they still had a 'best' room.
How is it every fella never forgets the price of a pint? Funeeee!

Mr Head the art teacher?
Barry Durhams son has been on here enquiring if anyone remebers his dad and granddad. Mick Unwin is still around in beighton, June Sargent married Eddie Jones and is still in village

Yes, it's me. It sounds like we were in the same class?
I hear from Mick Unwin, occasionally. We were friends on facebook until I opted out. (I got tired of some 'friends' posting their political & religious views-think, The Rapture; and yeah, they're still here!)
Mr. Kirk was very nice. Looking back, I'm not proud of the tricks we played on him; like switching on the Tape Recorder, (Reel to Reel) before class. At the start of class, he went to use it and hit the switch then spent the next 15 mins trying to figure out why it wouldn't work.
Mr. Head was what they would call 'cool', today. He gave me lots of encouragement in art class-which I ignored, and yes, I regret that too. But, that was the field I went in to, finally. (Graphic Design, not Fine Art.) I saw where Susan Money won an art competition; one of many, I'm sure. She was a very talented artist and a sweet girl.
Mrs. Finney, ummm, she was quite mean towards the girls, (or was it just me?). Do you remember the music stands suddenly collapsing in the middle of a percussion class?
Mr. Fitz once threw a stick of chalk at me during a History exam. He missed, but he scared the living daylights out of me.
June & Eddie are/were involved in the Beighton Historical Society, they have done a lot of hard work in an effort to keep Beighton from looking like a dump.
Are you still living in Beighton? Retired?

Pulseroom 12-07-2011, 16:36 Can anyone remember Mrs Hardy, the wife of the headmaster, she teached English in the top corner room of the wooden classrooms. I remember playing guitar in assembly and someone (I forget who) played a snare drum. It must have sounded awful. Frank Miles lived 3 doors up from me, he played a double headed guitar for Dave Berry, Chuck Fowler lived next door, he was very successful on the club circuit. Can anyone remember the young boy who died with a face cancer? I think his surname was cooper, very sad.

It was Frank White (did he change his name) that played the twin fret gibson for Dave Berry.

I remember Mrs. Hardy. I think she was a substitute teacher. She certainly wasn't used to teaching senior's judging from the books she handed out; Smudger Smith and Ginger Bates at the Dump? Really, these book belonged in the junior school.
When Bob Clarke ran the Beighton Miner's Welfare, Dave (Sugar) Grundy and the band would practice in a room above the club. I remember Frank, Alan Taylor and two more fellas who's names escape me but they could have been the original Cruisers. Pat (Clarke)and I were often invited to watch/hear them practice. We were thrilled.
We were lucky to be part of the Sixties music experience- I still Love Rock 'N Roll!

I used to watch Dave Berry and Joe Cocker at the Birley, Freechville also used to watch some great bands at the Blue Bell Hackenthorpe and yes I was underage. I used to enjoy Maggies at Swallownest and Mojo Club Sheffield, me and my sister Anne used to dress as Bonnie and Clyde on my sx200 scooter. Very lucky to have been around those years, never to be repeated.

We were asked to 'cheer' for them at a sort of battle of the bands in Sheffield at one of the cinemas. I'm sure we were still in school so it must have been the early 60's. When Dave & the Cruisers came on, my friend and I stood up and screamed as loud as we could, only to be told to 'sit down & shut up' by the kids in the row in front! Talk about embarrassing. Groupies...we were not. I don't think the band won, they were up against all Sheffield bands (and their fans) like the Gray Cats..Stray Cats?
My brother and I went to the City Hall to see Jerry Lee Lewis...mid 60's? Great show. I didn't go to another concert until The Rolling Stones-Steel Wheels Tour in 1989-now that was worth waiting for.

Not heard that, he sang all the songs from The Cying game album and lots of his old songs, he's playing on 24th July at the Burntwood Festival, Nr Lichfield Midlands (Backed by New Amen Corner). He is very busy with gigs which include many of the 60s bands.

Are you going to that gig? Do they still play the old Chuck Berry songs? (His namesake.) I don't know any of the latest singers or songs.
I like the "Blues" and even some 'Bluegrass". My iTunes collections are all over the globe, from Nina Simone to early Tom Waits, with some kick-ass Rock 'n Roll in between I've taken a liking to Teddy Thompson so I guess I like some 'country', too. Well, the early rock was based on 'country' and the blues. Enjoy the concert!

Yes, I remember Mrs Hardy well. We lived close by the school house on School Road but I did not know she taught English at one time. I met her son Charles few years ago, after about a 48 year gap on a visit back to Beighton. I also seem to recall vaguely the name of the Cooper boy; really tragic indeed. I always remember him once coming in to Trevor Hardwick's dads shop on High street once when his face was really bad. After that time I never saw him again. I think he also lived on School Road, can anyone confirm that? I never knew him at school or socially, but I think he was a bit younger than me. I think Dave Berry's mother lived on School Road at one time also?
Beightonman 03-08-2011, 13:12 Has everyone/anyone on this thread seen the 'Our Beighton' Celebrating a Community book put out by Eventus, Sheffield, a few years ago? No publishing date was provided. This has some excellent personal stories from times past. There is a very moving poem in there by a Michael Schofield on the famous 41 steps; has anyone seen that? Does Michael still live in Beighton? I did not know him.
At the same time, Eventus put out an excellent web site, Our Beighton, with some wonderful audio reminiscences of old Beighton. This was great to hear lots of people I knew from 50 years ago, most now no longer with us. Unfortunately the site is not available any more. I tried to find it on the Way Back archive web site and that has got some text on it, but no audio records. Does anyone know if this site might be reactivated? I have a CD of the recording of my mother, which Eventus sent me, but not the complete site audio record.
Pulseroom 03-08-2011, 19:43 I used to frequently visit the website, I think it was looked after by funding, and as this stopped the website was taken down. The book is still available. It is the website that brought me back to Beighton to see the memorial of the pit disaster, my uncle Maurice was in that, his name is on the plaque, Maurice Parkin. He married my mothers sister Olive and they had a paper shop. They moved to spilsby many years ago.
You may know my cousins, Trevor and Rita williams????

Beightonman 03-08-2011, 20:29 Did any of you grow up in Beighton during the early 50's 60's?

I well remember Jack Freeman's bike shop on High Street bottom, where I bought my first decent bike. I don't really remember if Jean Freeman, who I went to school with, was in same family or not as Jack but I discovered in 2006 Jean was retired and living in Spain (then Jean Sheil). I was planning to visit sometime thereafter. Then I heard she was tragically killed there by a drunk driver November 2007, in case anyone remembers Jean.

This was great to hear lots of people I knew from 50 years ago, most now no longer with us. Unfortunately the site is not available any more. I tried to find it on the Way Back archive web site and that has got some text on it, but no audio records. Does anyone know if this site might be reactivated? I have a CD of the recording of my mother, which Eventus sent me, but not the complete site audio record.

purrkins 09-08-2011, 20:14 I petitioned to stop them demolishing the barn and through this, Robert Dawson got in touch me. Not heard from him since they left Skelton lane

Thanks, that was the site I meant, but all the original information has been removed and there is almost nothing on Beighton left and that is not easy to find.
Hi
You can get the project from Sheffield city library in it entirety. Or write to them (Eventum)and they will send it to you.
Happy days

Bocadillo 05-11-2011, 17:43 I've just discovered this forum and mentioned a lot of its content to my dad. He is 88 years old now and he remembers loads of names and places. He grew up on Norcroft Cottages and was a miner at Brookhouse Colliery from the age of 14. His name is Joseph Crofts and his dad was a miner also named Joseph. I was born on Southall Green and my parents had a flat on Victoria Road. The flat was obtained with the help of Bade Turton who my dad says was a good man. Other people mentioned are Charlie Storey who lived next door to my uncle Juda and uncle Tom ( Fallows) at number 13 Norcroft Cottages. Juda had only one leg and Tom was blind from birth. I would be delighted if anybody remembers the family - although it is so long ago.

kaytbones 12-02-2012, 04:52 I lived in Beighton as a child in the sixties before we moved to Canada - 113 Woodhouse Lane. I remember playing with the Wendy (I think last name-Shaw) mentioned in an earlier post and who lived a few houses over from us - she had a brother called Malcolm I believe. We lived next door to Radford Family and across the the street from Molinaries Ice cream. I remember walking up a hill to the corner shop - I think the name was "Anderson's" or something like that. Any information about these families and another of a girl on Robin Lane that I played with also, who was called Judith, would be appreciated.
