View Full Version : Songs with lyrics changed
Did anyone know that the MJ song 'They don't really care about us' had to have it's lyrics changed because Sony thought it would offend people. The lines in the original song were:
'Jew me, sue me - everybody do me'
'Kick me - Kike me - don't you black or white me'
They then played a weird zap sound over the words 'Jew' and 'Kike', If anyone has the original HIStory albums, they could be worth a bob or two now. It seems weird in this day and age when gangster rap songs feature all manner of racist, sexist and homophobic language. Eminem, Tupac, Dre, Snoop come to mind for starters.
On another note, the video to the song also has two versions, one in a prison and one on the streets of Rio in Brazil.
Got me wondering if any other songs like this had to be changed.
BasilRathbon 23-07-2009, 12:35 Funny you should mention that, as I brought it up a couple of weeks back.

There was no response from you about it, despite the fact you'd been on the thread several times. Is this because MJ's anti-semitism is, like his child abuse, something you'll gloss over just because you liked his music?

I think you'll find he wasn't being anti-semitic, he was trying to point out that he was being judged, like the Jews by Hitler. It helps when your point is stated in a correct fashion.
This thread is about lyrics of songs being changed, so please don't try to change the subject. If you have nothing to say on the matter then dont.

So I was right; you are glossing over his anti-semitism or at the very least trying to justify it!
Do you not think it's just a little offensive for a fading pop star to compare people saying funny things about his nose to the plight of the millions of jews murdered during the holocaust?
The opening post of thread was about Sony censoring the offensive lyrics of a song written by Michael Jackson, so please don't try to change the subject. If you have nothing to say on the matter then don't.

What!!??!!:gag::loopy::loopy::loopy: Are you for real. I know you dont like MJ much but to spout such utter garbage on a thread about a totally different subject is ... well, laughable.
Are you abit miffed because your thread never got any replies??.. wonder why that was then.

Just trying to offer a bit of balance, old boy. We shouldn't attempt to gloss over the fact that someone was a pretty unpleasant person simply because he sang a couple of toe-tapping songs and is now dead.
Please direct me to which part of my post is untrue.
Oooooooooookay...:loopy::huh:
Anyone else want to comment on the actual subject matter please do?

Yes, lyrics are often changed on singles for that very reason - they are singles, and thus released with the charts in mind. Any potential controversial lyrics need to be expunged in order to secure maximum airplay. There are many other examples:
"We don't want your f****** love" became "Roses in the hospital" in the Manics classic.
"and that's what makes my life so f****** fantastic" (Lily Allen, 'The Fear')
"Tell me the truth! The truth mother******" became "Tell me the truth! The truth mothercrumber" in an old Clawfinger song (The Truth)
"Mother****ing gangbang goin' on beeyatch on dis yellow submarine" became "We all live in a yellow submarine" in a popular Beatles favourite.
I could go on, but I'm sure you all have your own examples.
See? That's why. Michael Jackson was indeed a scumbag though.
That James Blunt song, beautiful was changed for the single version a few years ago, wasn't it, to removing the offending F work and replaying it with 'flying'.
But, yes, the Jackson lines were quite repulsive and ill thought-out.
TheBlueDragon 23-07-2009, 23:51 Ive got 2versions of Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend
"I'm the mother****ing princess"
becomes
"I'm the one and only princess
Smithster 24-07-2009, 08:59 Radiohead changed the lyrics on Creep from 'you're so f***ing special' to 'You're so very special' for obvious reasons.
Also, that Afroman song 'Because I got High' was drastically changed before it got a UK release. I won't post what the original lyrics were because this is supposed to be a family forum.
Wasn't it Westlife or Boyzone or some other God awful cretinous boyband that murdered Fairytale of New York and changed the words "You scumbag, you faggot" to something like "You're old and you're haggard"?
EdnaKrabappe 24-07-2009, 09:47 I remember The Jam used to have to change various lyrics. Note this top of the pops performance ... that bullfrogs are bullfrogs they just go by different names....

Beautiful South... Don't marry her ( have me) - she'll grab your Sandra Bullocks and slowly raise her knee - you could buy a version of the album with this copy on...

Actually the South got into a lot of trouble for their lyrics... my book they got into trouble for for the lines "Back to bed, back to reality" due to its obviously similarity to "Back to life, Back to reality" Soul II Soul but paid to keep it in. They also lost the rights to the Album cover of Miaow due to its similarity to the HMV dog and it went from this....

didn't the beautiful south also have another cover changed as it was originally a woman with a gun in its mouth
edited :- just found this on wiki
Jan Saudek's album cover originally depicted two pictures, one of a woman with a gun in her mouth, and another with a man smoking. Woolworths refused to stock the album to "prevent the hoards of impressionable young fans from blowing their heads off in a gun-gobbling frenzy, or taking up smoking[1]"; therefore, an alternate cover featuring a picture of a stuffed toy rabbit and a teddy bear was made.

Scrambled eggs
Have an omelet with some muenster cheese.
Put your dishes in the washbin please
so I can clean the scrambled eggs.
Join me, do
There are lots of eggs for me and you
I've got ham and cheese and bacon too
so go get two and join me, do.
Fried or sunny-side
just aren't right. The mix-bowl begs.
Quick - go get a pan
and we'll scram-ble up some eggs, eggs, eggs, eggs.
Scrambled eggs
Good for breakfast, dinnertime or brunch
Don't buy six or twelve - buy a bunch
and we'll have lunch
on scrambled eggs.
