View Full Version : Best cover songs
costa del 22-07-2009, 11:23 What's the point in covering a song unless you can do it justice or even improve it. I give you my top 3 covers, please tell me your favourites.
A Little Help from My Friends - Beatles/Joe Cocker
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash
Mr Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan/Byrds
Treatment 22-07-2009, 11:25 Little Wing - The Corrs :gag:
paranoid 22-07-2009, 11:27 mmm, can't think of many off the top of my head, but metallica's cover of whiskey in the jar is pretty cool (even though it's a bit soft compared to their earlier stuff)
leviathan13 22-07-2009, 11:29 For me the greatest cover EVER has be Jimi's version of All Along The Watchtower! It was so good that even Dylan himself started to play Jimi's version.
I'd agree with Joe Cocker's "A Little Help...".
For newer covers I'd have to go for Turisas' version of Rasputin. That is hilarious. Along with this, Children Of Bodom's cover of Lookin' Out My Backdoor, originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
I also think the Bloodhound Gang version of Kids In America is worth a mention too.
Amy winehouse covered Valerie very well by the Zutons

Antics^^ 22-07-2009, 13:56 Ryan Adams - Wonderwall
EbonyBranch 22-07-2009, 14:12 Nouvelle Vague have done some brilliant covers, especially Making Plans for Nigel, Marian, Ever Fallen in Love (with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with)?, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning and Guns of Brixton.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes have blasted through a load of classics; my faves by them are Sloop John B, Blowin' in the Wind, Rocket Man, All My Lovin', I Believe I Can Fly and Hello
BUT, the king of covers has to be Richard Cheese! Check out his versions of Enter Sandman, Chop Suey, Creep...to be honest, he's done so many fantastic covers I could go on ffor hours!
EbonyBranch 22-07-2009, 14:13 Also, special mention for placebo's cover of Running Up that Hill.
leviathan13 22-07-2009, 15:08 Just thought of another - Fun Lovin' Criminals version of I'm Not In Love.

Heaven - I love Simply Red's version - sorry!
Not over yet Klaxons.
Bruce Dickinson did a decent version of David Bowies/Mott the Hooples All the Young Dudes on his first solo album.
Johnny Cash's version of Personal Jesus is pretty damn good.
And let's not forget Mike Flower's Pops Wonderwall.
Faith no More Easy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AuhTr2AAQQ)
I actually prefer Faith no More's version to the original.
Elvis Costello: Peace Love and Understanding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3ZXdvN3orA)...
Of course. Forgot about that one.
And this version of Wuthering Heights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRmwSxTiKCA) deserves its own post.:hihi:

I love this version of Creep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKltlk8A6Lk)by the very lovely Amanda Palmer.
And this cover of Wishin' and Hopin' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ-MVAzdUK4) by Ani DiFranco. The video is the opening to My Best Friend's Wedding.

Two very different covers of Smooth Criminal - An Alien (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orr63IHZJeA) one and a Fiddly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVYv_N4beJc) one (1.20 onwards)

Plain Talker 17-09-2009, 22:10 The Ramones - Baby, I Love You
I Don't Want To Talk About It - Everything But The Girl
Dear Prudence - Siouxsie And The Banshees
I Only Wanna Be With You - The Tourists
But I'd guess my all-time favourite cover must be:
Without You - Nilsson
I agree with you on the Tourists, Siouxie, and the ramones. (despite there being such a massive rash of cover versions of 50s/60s songs in the late 70s and early eighties.)
I really liked Skin'ead Sinead O'Connor's version of "Nothin' compares 2U" (that's not TXT, it's the name of the song) somewhat more than Prince's original. And I liked Prince's version a lot.
I did like Soft Cell's "souped-up" version of "Tainted Love", and the Communards' brilliant version of"Don't Leave Me This Way".
I was extremely tickled by Erasure's ABBA-esque, too. (especially Andy, larking about in the Video doing an impression of Agnetha!)
HeadingNorth 17-09-2009, 22:27 Annie Lennox, "No more I love you's," and David Gray, "Say Hello Wave Goodbye."
Both of which I consider superior to the originals.
leviathan13 17-09-2009, 22:53 Kate Rusby - The Village Green Preservation Society
Jack's Rake 17-09-2009, 22:53 Annie Lennox, "No more I love you's," and David Gray, "Say Hello Wave Goodbye."
Both of which I consider superior to the originals.
As are:
Van Halen's "You Really Got Me"
Aerosmith's "Come Together"
Stranglers' "Walk on By"
... though I'm willing to be convinced otherwise regarding "Come Together"
tom_linmore 18-09-2009, 07:35 Travis covered hit me baby one mroe time
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
I Want to Tell You - Thea Gilmore
Dream a Little Dream of Me - The Mamas & the Papas
Love You To - Sukilove (for being so very different from the original).
