View Full Version : DAM HOUSE, Excellent bar/restaurant, great atmosphere
Went here on Saturday 4th July 09, whilst visiting Sheffield from London, the food was exquisite, I had the duck which was cooked perfectly and the creme brulee is to die for. The staff were helpful and attentive. The views/ location is amazing and not to be missed, such a hidden gem, in the heart of Sheffield. Would highly recommend this venue, on a par with any London restaurant:)

dandelion59 22-07-2009, 21:47 Have to say this place is a hidden gem,it is a lovely place and the views are great.
Does it get busy? Thinking about taking my bird there one lunchtime soon.

Best stick to the hen and chicks for you mate.;)
I've tried to go twice in the last couple of months; both times it was closed for private functions. Definitely a place to ring ahead before dropping in.
mywufwuf 23-07-2009, 16:22 My favourite place for eating out. Good service and the food is excellent and plentiful. Great views over the dam and the place itself is spotless. Valentines night is particularly good, 3 course meal and entertainment.
i agree. the burgers are great and the atmosphere is pleasant. its got a pretty nice view aswell.
Fiona1985 23-07-2009, 18:56 :hihi: LOVE the Dam House.
Was planning on going there for a meal a few days ago but I was ill and gutted I had to get in bed instead
I can't believe I've just seen this thread. :DIt was my graduation on Monday afternoon, and we went along for lunch at the dam house. I can honestly say I've never had a better meal in sheffield.
I was a bit nervous as I had my whole family there, and I wanted to take them somewhere a bit special, but everywhere I've been recently has been very you know...samey. :loopy:
My dad had roast beef with massive yorkshire pud...which he was very happy with. Then they brought out these massive bowls of creamy potato and roasted vegetables- we got loads. I had the chicken- which was also very very nice. Then for afters I had this strawberry soup??! fantastic! yummy...it was nice to get a desert that wasn't heavy for a change. I defintely recommend that.
The best thing about this place though is the smiley friendly faces. I eat out a lot, and it's a rareity. The pretty girl that served us, genuinly seemed to care- she was taking our photos, and helping us choose on the menu, having a giggle with us. Very nice.
All in all, the dam house is a very friendly warm place to dine in my experience. Excellent food, and warm friendly service. I just hope next time we go it a bit warmer so we can sit by the lake!!!
drumstuck 24-07-2009, 19:42 Funny how the OP is so full of praise for the place with their one and only post, a new thread at that, and is 'answered' almost exactly 24 hours later by someone from there with promotional advice.
Personally, I think this place is overpriced and awful. Which is why it is closed most w/e to people who have hired it (no locals, wonder why?). I pity anyone hiring this place as the food is quite average and yet quite expensive. A winning combination if you expect people to only go there once...
drumstuck 24-07-2009, 19:47 Oh, and in case you think I am being overly suspicious, check out the thread history of user 'posh' above my thread. They've been around a long time. And the evening after a lovely graduation meal accurately listing almost everything on the menu, what better way to round it off than posting a thread detailing it all on the forum of the local area :hihi:
I have to add to this, we love this place, both for lunch and dinner. The menu is fab and service has always been brilliant.
I also love the yorkshire pudding and my husband adores your rhubarb crumble.
Keep up the good work!
I'm a "local" as I live in Crookes, and I really like it. As do my friends that have been (on my recommendation)

loobylou-lou 25-07-2009, 09:11 Isnt it funny that if you look in this section the last 5 posts have been answered by Dam House, I suspect they are struggling and are touting for business, is this Jack Danny in another guise i wonder
sheffgrow 25-07-2009, 10:51 its worth going for the waitress alone, she is one good looking girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that Dam House is going to have a bit of an uphill struggle to remove the memories of JackDanny..... It may be that there are different people there now but there was no way I would have gone when he was around. Maybe I will give it a go some time and report back.

who is jackdanny???
I've been a few times and always found the food to be nice, the service good and the price reasonable. There was only one time that I felt the music could have been turned down a little.
I tried to book again recently on a Saturday night but they were booked up with a private party.
I'd certainly go again. I wouldn't mind a few new things on the menu though!
who is jackdanny???
Someone who used to post on here a lot - he was from Dam House and, let us just say, his postings did not act as a good advertisement for the place
Ghostrider 25-07-2009, 15:01 who is jackdanny???I was going to ask the very same thing..
I will be at the Dam House this evening...

I honestly think you have one of the worst run pubs in Sheffield. Do you never wonder why you have so little custom and yet have a pub in such an attractive setting?
Ghostrider 26-07-2009, 09:20 I was there with about 100 people last night, everyone I spoke to commented on the quality of the food (compliments to the chef)
Everyone had a great time, the service was fantastic and the staff couldnt have been better - a big thumbs up from me guys :thumbsup::thumbsup:
Now lets see if the staff can figure out who I am :hihi:
I just wanted to post some postive comments about a really great meal my family and I had in sheffield. I haven't been for too many here.
Not that I have to explain myself - but I shall-My thread history is low because I'v not been on here in a while since I've been living back down in manchester and I forgot my password to my old account so set up a new one instead.
I find 'drumstucks' negativity of the dam house more suspicious than the nice things I had to say about the place. Why such an axe to grind with the place? Business competition perhaps? Maybe not, but even so my positive comments have as much of a place here as your negative ones.
can I also add, from drumstucks thread history you can tell that there is A LOT of negativity

It is in the middle of the park. It is competition only with the winos in the old boating house that form part of the view. At least the winos will get some value for money ... oh, and that same great view. I've had one mediocre meal and twice been ripped off over a round of drinks. I have only been there three times, yet have walked past it almost every day for the last three years. It is, without any doubt the worst pub I have ever been in in my life. Just to clear that up.

everytime i have been it has always been spot on!!!!
perhaps you would be better off with the winos in the park
Only had a bar snack to eat there, which was okay, nothing special but nothing wrong. Have been a few times on warm afternoons for a drink and it's always been nice - maybe a little pricey, but the staff have always been friendly.
Not eaten from the main menu, but as a bar nothing to complain about apart from being off the beaten track; but lovely on a hot Sunday afternoon to sit outside on the terrace.

On a par with any London restaurant? Lets name a few- Pied a Terre, Ducasse at the Dorchester, Le Gavroche, L Escargot and Aubergine will do for starters.
Now do you really expect us to take your 'Review' seriously when you use such ridiculous statements as that? As far as the guides are concerned there are very few places within a stones throw of Sheffield that come close to any of those names, Fischers at Baslow Hall and The Old Vicarage at Ridgeway, maybe. As for view and location its a decent building that overlooks a boating lake, it's hardly the Hanging Gardens of Babylon or the Lakes.
I have been a couple of times and its fine, no complaints, but it definitley not destination dining.

Now that is a good place to eat. Took the missus' parents there as a thank-you for helping us redecorate. I think it would have been cheaper to get professional decorators in :o.
Kthebean 27-07-2009, 17:08 I think its a bit overpriced and the staff were very snotty when we went for a meal there. The food was very nice.
Mr_Skeleton 29-07-2009, 11:43 Definitely a good place to visit in nice weather. Pints were ~£3 which is pretty standard. Strange obsession with urinal cakes though (you'll know what I mean if you're male and have visited). Can't comment on the food.
Sandra Spice 30-07-2009, 15:37 I recently took a group of 24 here & I have to say it was superb service, above superb food & very reasonably priced. In fact one of the best restaurants I've been to in Sheffield & as a group booker we book at least 3 different ones every month but Dam House has certainly stood out for all the right reasons.
guineapig 01-08-2009, 18:07 How expensive is expensive . Have wanted to go for a while but need to know if its a treat that needs saving for!

Smack Jack 01-08-2009, 21:59 How expensive? Expect around £25 a head for a couple of courses and drinks. Last time I went was six months ago. I have been 4 times and its been basically dead. The food is reasonable but they are tiny portions (which I dont believe is the sign of a good eatery), and I haven't been thrilled with staff. Insincere is one word that springs to mind, and the bar manager type (who also waitered our table at our last visit) was arrogant. I'd give that bit the benefit of the doubt but poncey food and tiny portions, and a somewhat pretentious atmosphere does not appeal to me
Really looks great there! Hope i could go there anytime next month.:)
samrawuk 02-08-2009, 19:37 I've been to the Damhouse quite a few times; with family, friends, other half, and once for a work do. I think the food is brilliant. My favourite is the duck in cherry sauce, been fab and not too fatty every time I've had it. Also really like the burgers and recently had the refreshing summer risotto. Oh and they did a salmon starter a while ago (maybe salmon roulade?) that I don't know if they still do, but the salmon was delicious.
The only complaints I've had have been down to the service. Went for Valentines and it was understandably busy, but we were left waiting quite a while and not offered more drinks. And another time the food took a long time coming out. BUT if you complain and actually let the manager know then they are very responsive. Have provided us with vouchers in compensation and we will definitely visit again.
I've never had food at the Dam House so I can't comment on that but when the weather is nice and you can sit outside it's one of my favourite places to go.
The only downside is that recently they seem to have had quite a few private functions and it's been closed. I don't live to far away so it's not a big problem for me, I can see that it would be annoying if you had travelled further.
garrence 03-08-2009, 23:32 We went last tuesday for the early evening menu. They'd been booked out with graduations the days before and it took the waitress sometime to find the menus! We were the only people there til 2 others showed up.
The salmon roulade is Philadelphia cheese wrapped in Salmon. The duck for main course was pleasant enough. The cheese board was rather uninspiring.
In all it's OK food, reasonably cooked and reasonably presented. Not outstanding but nothing to complain about.
The price of the early evening menu is £15 for 3 courses and glass of wine. That's a bargain and it's not surprising they have to use fairly low cost food and present it well.
At that price we'll probably go back next time we don't feel like cooking. I'd perhaps seek out somewhere with more delicious temptations if I wanted to make a night of it.
boyfriday 04-08-2009, 17:03 Ah, The Dam House, the great enigma of Yorkshire fine dining!
I've visited the Dam House a few times over the years, most recently a couple of years ago for a staff Xmas Party and I have to say it wasn't great, in fact it was less than average.
Had a walk through Crookes Valley Park at the weekend and strolled through the front garden, stopping briefly to acknowledge two staff members who appeared very friendly, all smiles.
The remodelled outside looks FANTASTIC, ample seating on the two terraces and a view that would be the envy of many top rated restaurants nationally.
I've committed to going back, especially after the above pretty positive comments, it really deserves to succeed if they get the food & prices right.
Just as an aside if anyone believes the Dam House troubles are a recent curse, this pic from 1950 shows an earlier dereliction! I also cant believe the building dates back to 1780.

sammo sparks 29-09-2009, 18:19 Had a meal there on Sunday with my wife, two young daughters and my in-laws. I opted for the roast beef and it was spot on. My eldest daughter had toad in the hole, which was nearly as large as an adults meal and she loved it! Even though we arrived after 5pm, they still let the kids eat free and the total bill for 2 starters, 4 adult meals, 2 kids meals, bottle of wine and 3 coffees was £61! This was brilliant value for money and it wasnt your usual samey kind of restaurant either.Everybody was impressed and will definitely be going back.
pattricia 29-09-2009, 18:23 I shall try this place.:)
The Damhouse 30-09-2009, 07:43 If you are going to give us a try, please come down this Thursday (OCTOBER THE 1ST).
We are having a special Caribbean night with a steel pan band for later.
We have a lot of our regulars and locals coming, and families too.
Also, thank you for you positive comments on this forum, this feedback from people in Sheffield is crucial in steering our business in the right direction.
I do feel I have to answer some of the negative ones though....
Although it has been a recession, this year has been a fantastic one with your support, and we are looking forward to another great Christmas, so book soon!
We have several comments on here that say we are expensive, please could you let us know by email or phone which dishes on our menu are expensive, and which other eateries do you base this on. Because we are an independent, we can change our prices by, well, this lunch time!!
A lot of research and time has gone in to the pricing of our dishes based on the following constraints
1. value for money on a plate and what it looks like
2. our competitors prices, and the going market rate for a particular dish
3. the mark up, or GP% (gross profit margin) which all restaurants use which is based on how expensive the products that make up a dish to buy in.
If we have got it wrong, could any one really tell us what the dishes are which are expensive?
Looking forward to you comments, and we hope to see you this Thursday.
I have no problem with this restaurant. I've been a few times, the food is good, the prices are not extortionate and I would have no quarms about going back.
I really don't know how anybody can complain about 3 courses for £20 given the type of restaurant that it is.
neeeeeeeeeek 30-09-2009, 08:53 I had a Sunday roast there the other week, it was average. Lamb was very fatty and there was not enough veg.
The Damhouse 30-09-2009, 09:38 I had a Sunday roast there the other week, it was average. Lamb was very fatty and there was not enough veg.
Sorry to hear that,
what was the date you came and did you speak to a manager or server with your views, we are more than happy to get you more vegetables.
We don't often do lamb, and most Sundays we have beef as an alternative. Was this offered to you?
Please call us with any issues you have as we like to put things right on the day, sorry you had a bad visit.
If you could forward me any other details (time, date, where you where sat etc) so we can look in to this.
Thank you for your comments.
neeeeeeeeeek 30-09-2009, 13:06 You had Lamb or Gammon which seemed an odd selection, everyone else wanted Pork or Beef which is why then ended up ordering burgers. They all liked the burgers though.
I did not complain as there was nothing really wrong with the food, your at the higher end price wise for a Sunday roast so I guess I just expected it to be a bit better.
I shall try work out when it was and PM you with my suggestions!!
:)

Well all of the stuff on the downstairs menu at The Milestone is cheaper (£3 or £4 per dish), and yet a bigger portion and a better quality meal in my opinion - and without being funny your not on a par with with the upstairs so its not gonna be a good comeback.
I'm not even trying to be be mean, its not as if you guys are awful I just think that the portions are too small and the prices too high to have mass appeal. Again you are bound to disagree, but is The Milestone ever not packed to the rafters? And again you work there and will know more than me, but from what I see the same can not always be said? ( scale of building accepted )
I do love your attitude though, and hope you don't mind my opinion ( I just love food so I normally have a strong opinion! )
I'm sure the place is lovely. Infact I had a really nice afternoon drinking there the other summer.
But that place has always had login aliases whoring the place out on this forum. It's so blatent. lol
:D
I really like the Dam House for drinks, coffee, service and, of course, the lovely surroundings but I've never been a big fan of the food.
Originally, I just thought this was 'cos I was veggie and the Dam House's veggie options all seem uninspired and very cheese-centric (not my cup of tea) but bringing friends who'll eat anything there, they seemed a bit underwhelmed too. It's not that any of the food I've had there has ever been bad - but, for the price paid, there doesn't seem to be much excitement on the plate.
Still, I will continue going there for drinks and the very friendly service - but it'll take a bit of revamp of the menu to make me fork out for dinner there again!
claire1982 21-01-2010, 20:58 I'd heard good things about Dam house and will definately be giving it a try. :)
