View Full Version : Plague of flying ant thingies!
FairyNormal 17-07-2005, 14:00 Does anyone else have a plague of awfull flying ant things? We have hundrds in our yard. They are crawling all over my washing, all over us and we've fished loads and loads out of the paddling pool.
They are beween 1 and 2cm long, shiny black bodies and big-ish wings.
I found THIS (http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/4DMG/Pests/flyant.htm) and it looks as if these are them.
Horrible things! Get everywhere. Now I feel all itchy!!
Anyone else got a problem with them?
Yesterday i turned in to a mass murderer of ants, all along our garden wall at the side of the house they had made a lovely little home, taking the time to find their way in to the bathroom, millions of them.... until....
i turned in to Arnold Schwarzenegger armed with ant powder and spray!!!!
  die you little Sh**s..........
i know im evil...............
Kristian 17-07-2005, 14:10 Slightly off-topic, but I inhaled about 20 midges the other day when walking past the river next to my home :( They don't go well with a Marlboro Light I can tell you...

Kristian, barbequed ants are not a vegetarian food.
Back to flying ants... apparently the plague won't last long, as they only live a couple of days. Then I suppose you can look forard to sweeping up hundreds of little dead things instead. ;)
There's a flock of starlings ganging up on the flying ants at the moment around Sothall - had 3 starlings, a few finches and some exotic looking birds [probably migrated here for the food and nice weather ?] in my garden filling their bellies with the ants :)
Only problem is they're pulling bits off my garden wall as they gather up the hoardes of ants :(
We've got them over here, but not as bad. There's ones scurrying around without wings already though, so they'll be gone soon. In the meantime, it's giving the local kids something to stamp on. ;)

I know! I did feel a bit sorry for them; what a way to die. Fancy being eaten alive by someone who wasn't even hungry...
Now this is where the advantages of smoking come in.
Light up a fag, or sit next to someone who already has (to save money) and the little gits clear off and annoy someone else.
Just found one of those little critters crawling up my arm, It be dead now though :(
bobsyouruncle 17-07-2005, 16:22 Had loads in my backyard too, but the cat seems to enjoy them even if i dont, damn things, so i got out the fly killer and my size 9's............................CRUNCH!!:D
seanyboy 17-07-2005, 18:29 Been to Centretainment this afternoon and they're flying around, attacking everyone who walks into hollywood bowl.

For unpleasantness you really want to try eating them! :gag: :gag:
EdnaKrabappe 17-07-2005, 19:17 They got me at Sainsburys today whilst my nan was taking telling me I was packing my boot all incorrectly with her shopping. One flew in the boot and I'm now paranoid I will be responsible for hybrids of these things colonising all over South Yorkshire courtesy of the nice warm breeding ground my boot will provide.
clairerob 17-07-2005, 19:32 Completely ruined are barbeQ we was having today. They were everywhere and it made me all itchy. They look exactly like your picture of them. I knew they were flying ants which made it worse coz I really hate ants!!
UnkleBob 17-07-2005, 19:44 my sister has them in her yard, on Handsworth. don't let the buggers bite you!
LellyBee 17-07-2005, 21:23 I was at my sisters house at Stradbroke this afternoon and we were swamped by these little buggers. Managed to kill loads because they were too slow to fly away, uurrgggh horrible things :gag:
Jillybabes 18-07-2005, 10:55 I have seen hundreds of these bloody things flying and crawling around. I took the dog out yesterday and there were hundreds of ants, regular and the flying kind all over the grass verges, it looked like the verges were alive!!! Vile horrible things. I brought some washing in yesterday and there was one stuck to my knickers! Urgh the thought of em is making me itch:loopy:
Was around Sheffield a bit yesterday (Sunday), & they're everywhere!
Well, train station, Division St, West Street, Broomhill, Crookes, Walkley, & up Barnsley Road toward Northern General, so good enough...
Think it was the mild winter, or some student's escaped experiment?
looby_hitch 27-07-2005, 15:49 They were out and about in Hackenthorpe and Beighton too. They are the new ants that were trying to find new nests for next year. Those of you who are local will remember the plague on Fargate last summer. They come out 'to play' when we get very dry and hot weather. They mate and then die within a few days.
Sheffield is riddled with ants nests so they'll be here every year from now on! Oh joy!
Internetowl 27-07-2005, 16:49 not noticed them for about a week or so - thought they'd gone on holiday
valentine 18-08-2005, 11:52 Has anyone else been plagued by them this week, my sister lives at Hillsborough and said Tuesday and yesterday they were back with avengence.

They will be different ones, because they only fly once and then their wings drop off and they mate and start up a new nest..........not unlike the human race really. :P
SilentStatic 18-08-2005, 12:49 Ants helped me get a 2:1 in my Biology degree
There's a minor plague of them right now I think... it's the weather conditions at a guess.
They were all over the place yesterday in town and London Rd area... all grounded for the most part.
AAARRRGGGGHHHH
Just looked at that picture and it scared the s**t out of me!
Don't even know why I looked cos I hate ants, they really scare me clever little creatures! don't even really know why:confused: nothing I repeat nothing else in the world scares me!
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o
These flying devils better not come near me or I'm emigrating far away where ants and the even worse flying variety don't exist.
My skin is crawling just thinking about it.
Hope my bf doesn't read this, he keeps saying he is going to get an ant farm to overcome my fear!!!!! Whatever
:suspect:
NorthernSoul 18-08-2005, 14:49 I saw millions of the little b******s crawling about on the astra turf footie pitches at Abbeydale the other night.
Itching just looking at them

Don't worry Jess because even though they will already be living in your house and you have more than likely had some crawl into your ears and mouth whilst you are asleep ants are really sociable little fellows who love to live side by side with their fellow creatures. ;)
Sleep well tonight :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
goldenfleece 18-08-2005, 15:51 There have been huge swarms of these up at Redmires for the last 2 days....I go dog walking up by the reservoirs and they were all over the place. Just annoying though.....never been bitten by one or anything.....they look scary but seem quite harmless......can they sting or bite in fact?

I for one, welcome our new insect overlords
FairyNormal 16-07-2006, 17:31 Ewwwwww these little horrors are back again!! There are hundreds flying around outside our house right now. No doubt I'll be fishing the casualties out of the paddling pool in the morning!
Jabberwocky 16-07-2006, 17:34 The fish in my pond love em! My neighbours garden has a few nests that are erupting with the queen ants and Im scooping them up and throwing them into the pond.
The fish cant eat them fast enough.
morton39 21-07-2006, 15:21 Hi,
Been out of town for a couple of days and come home to ants all over my kitchen and porch.
They are a real pain in the ***.
My neighbour is getting paranoid and sprayed white powder everywhere, doors, windows, pipes, air vents, you name it, she sprayed it. Now I've got red runny eyes and the sneezes.
Whats worse, ants for a few days or an allergy to ant powder???????????
Last year we had the same problem, are we stuck with it forever, I hope not. Does anything work against these insects 'cos nothing we've used seems to.
Help appreciated.
Council will do 'a treatment' for £50, but won't guarantee it. HA. Not spending £50 on something that won't work.
RozeePozee 21-07-2006, 20:06 Hose them down and give your garden birds a protein feast. It's most entertaining to watch - we had the most birds I'd ever seen in one go in our garden today after about 3 nests full of ants decided to migrate at once. More fun than watching Big Brother ;)
UnkleBob 21-07-2006, 21:34 bloody hell! who's dug this old thread up?
