Hi all,

My husband and I are going to America for a visit from the 11th to 21st of August (YAY!), but we need someone to look after Betty while we're gone.

For those who don't already know about Betty, she has some special needs that a potential carer should be aware of:

She takes Propalin 3 times a day to help with her weeing problem. This seems to have taken care of most of the accidents, but she's still learning to "tell" when she needs to go out, so she *may* wet or poo in the house.

She doesn't get on well with other dogs.

She's fine with cats, as long as they don't go after her. We have 2 here.
She loves kids, and doesn't mind being "manhandled" at all (in fact, she eats it up.)

We really don't want to have to put her in kennels, as she's very much a people dog (not to mention a rescue who's sure to have negative associations with kennels), and I don't think she would do well there at all. So, if anyone could take her, we would be most grateful!

Possibly not the best way of phrasing it

Aw I'm sorry I have two dogs here, one of whom would definitely not be comfortable with a large dog coming to stay and another who might not be. And, as you say, she wouldn't be happy with other dogs anyway.

I'm sure someone would be happy to help though :D

LOL, you're right, that does sound wrong.

What I *meant* to say was that she seems to thrive on the physical attention kids like to give. ;)

Ha - she does love kids doesn't she Schiann.

I so hope someone on here can think of someone to help her in her time of need.
Wonder if we tried some sort of appeal? It would just take a special person to be able to look after her - not that she's hard - just sort of 'special'.

Can anyone think of a friend or neighbour who would love a dog for a couple of weeks fun?

Aye, she's a very easy dog; quiet and calm. She just needs someone to follow around. ;)

What about Little Mermaid?

What about Little Mermaid?

I was just thinking that! Haha!

Not sure about her cats though... they're a tad fiesty, would they keep out of her way/leave her be? I know one of them was quite pally with Eddy by the time he left!

I should have also mentioned that Betty does have a crate, which she sleeps in, and is content to stay in provided she knows you're closeby.

Betty seems to usually ignore the cats - and like Schian says - is happy to be in her crate safe and securely away from any trouble - as long as she can get out for walks and cuddles. Being in a crate is a lot nicer than having to go in a kennels for her.

Anyone think of someone?

Big thanks to Little Mermaid and Haddock man - after a little chat tonight - we think it will be possible for them to foster Betty for the time she is away. She will be looking for a short term foster home for the Friday night - until Monday morning - if anyone can do those few nights/days - if not - again she can go into kennels - but at least most of the stretch will be in a nice house.

Will tell Schiann now thanks you 2

Thats great news that you nearly have covered all the nights. We were almost in the same boat, we have a wedding to go to and normally my parents take the dog but unfortunately they are away at the same time. Luckily we managed to get a friend who has been great and will look after him for the duration.

The hotel where the wedding is actually does allow dogs so as a last resort I would have taken him up with us but as we would be out all day and night it seemed a bit harsh and I would dread him to bark (though he rarely does but with it being a new place you can never tell) and as the hotel is very expensive and I would not like to ruin anyones stay.

I dread ever having to put him in kennels as he was such a nervous mess after spending 4 months in them and thats at a place that really cared for him and where he was seeing people every day :(

Hope you get the last couple of days sorted. It is twice as hard when you have a dog that does not get on with others as all your doggy mates can't have them either!

Just a little bump to this thread.

We're fine having Betty, but we are away from the evening of Friday 14th August (any time after work) until Monday 17th August (could collect her early in the morning, at lunch, or after work).

I can drop her off and collect her. My number is 07921662625.

Well, she's here! She's currently lying in her crate with the door open, having put herself in there for a nap. Bless her, she is ignoring the cats, but am trying to keep them as seperate as possible, as April is very curious! Just thought I'd post to let everyone know she's fine, if a little whiny, but was as good as gold all through the night in her crate. She's still looking for someone to take her for the weekend, if not she will be in kennels. :(

In the end Betty did go to the kennels, but only for the time we were in London. She's been pretty good, but she's obviously missing her long term foster family very much.

There have been a few small accidents, but I think thats partly due to being away from her usual home and just the stress of being somewhere new.

Been fine with the cats, they've mostly just ignored her all together.

Think she's excited about going home soon!!

Thanks so much tho Haddockman and Littlemermaid. Just think how confused she would have been if there all the time. Never mind though - I'm sure she's really loved it with you both, and no doubt will be happy when Schiann comes back - hopefully feeling really refreshed having had a bit of the old USA homecoming.

Hugs to Betty -
(ps - any chance of any homely pics?)

You big, daft lump!!! :hihi:

I'm glad you were able to have her, I'm sure she's been much happier being spoiled rotten by you two than she would have been in kennels all the time.

Excited as she seems about going home, I'm glad to say she's been much more settled over the last few nights.

Earlier, she was a bin whiney in the night, but last few nights she's been as good as gold. Couple of little accidents, but was to be expected.

We might have a potter down to the park this afternoon and sit and read a magazine for an hour or so!

Does she read it to you or do you read it to her!!

Looks like you've got a lovely day for it, though.
