View Full Version : Social groups for people in their 20's?

online

Hi,

My sister has lost touch with her friends from school and wants to build herself something of a social life. I'm a bit older than her and we like to do different things.

Does anyone know of any social groups for people in their 20's in the Rotherham or Sheffield area? I'm fed up of her looking miserable! :)

You could have gone to the meet. I only didn't because I am broke this week and my Kids have made sureI've had next to no sleep.

Maybe we could have a in-our-20's-and-need-to-get-out club!

x:)

Thanks STRIX. Made me laugh - I'm actually a Spice member. Fantastic group, I thought it would be full of geeks but it is great - joining was one of the best decisions I've ever made. However although there are some younger members, most of the members are 30+ and my little sis is only 24. She's been along to events with me but wants to meet people more her own age.

Does anyone have any suggestions - she's driving me mad!!:help:

Contact one or both of the university student unions. You don't have to be a student to join their clubs and societies - it just costs a bit more ;)

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. Some great ideas.

As for Spice, Donnie, as a member I would have to disagree with you. I've met some great mates through Spice and done things that I would never have thought of doing. Yes they are a profit making company but what a great way to make a living - making people happy! The membership costs me less than £10 per month and paying a bit extra for something than if you were doing it yourself is well worth it because all the organising and sourcing is done for you. I'd recommend it to anyone - you'll never know whether its for you if you don't try it.

Thanx online (not sure who you are off the boards) but nice to hear you're enjoying yourself & recommending us
Yes Spice is a business - with 1800 members & 4 staff it needs to be - I'm afraid we can't work for free. But yes it is a fab job though.
We do try & put on a whole range of activities at different prices from free pub nights to £5 rambles & sports nights to meals, theatres, cinema & other social events to the bigger adrenaline events such as gliding, kayaking, ferrari driving etc... and even holidays & weekends away.
We try & put on a range of events at prices to suit every budget so if you're not able to stretch to more costly events you can still join & have a great time on the less costly events. It's up to each person what their budget is for their leisure time & how they spend it. But guess that's like many things in life!

 Hey all, me and the boyf moved up to Sheffield a few months back. Last saturday, we went to the forum and attempted to befriend some strangers but ended up with the result of my fiance appearing to try it on with 3 men. Not ideal!!!!

We are basically a couple that likes a good chat, a lively party, nice food and lots of dancing and are looking to meet like minded people in Sheffield.

If anyone fancies a drink and a chat in town, please let us know, its difficult being social animals with all your friends 200 miles away!

Sundays at the Devonshire Cat from 8.00 (look for the kilt and bondage bear!) with periodic ones on wednesdays (this weeks at Vodka Revolution) and other specials (this week there is one on Friday at the [not well named] Wodseats Palace). Meets are generally advertised in the notices and events sub-forum :)

Hiya!

I'm 22 and moved up here nearly a year ago from near Birmingham. I'm also interested in meeting people and the forum meets sound good. I can't seem to figure out where to hear about them though?!! Would I be a bit too young to join Spice or are there people my age there?

The Sheffield forum have regular meets on Sundays and Wednesday as already mentioned above, and other one-off meets (tend to be in Woodseats).

But, there's nothing stopping you arranging a meet when and where you fancy - just post it on here. Try to make sure your meet doesn't clash with one already planned.

You've got an audience upwards of 12,000 so if people are interested it's a great way of meeting people.

Look forward to seeing your posts

Hi,

There are people of all ages in Spice from age 18 (there's no upper age limit). I'm a young 32 and I do tend to find that most people are around my age or older (but maybe thats just the crowd I've fallen in with. There's something for everyone in the Spice programme and events take place almost every day of every week. Its more of a mindset - everyone is there to enjoy themselves. Me and the friends I've met through Spice do go out on the town on our own as well. Take a look at the Spice website, particularly the Yorkshire region one. If you do fancy going to a preview night or just meeting some of us drop me a line and I'll try and arrange to meet up with you if you're worried about going it alone. Take care, and enjoy yourself.

X

LOL! If only running a a business & the accounting was that simple donnie I'd be a millionaire!

We have a pricing structure to membership fees depending onhow long you have been a member so 90% of membership is not on £29.37 a quarter. They are on cheaper rates with long term members being on only £12 a quarter. So the £18K is way out for a start.

I get about £10K a month in on memship fees. I have to pay 17.5% of this in VAT & 16% in franchise levy. Then there's business overheads which you seem to have completely overlooked. We spend just over £2k a month on printing newsletter, £2K a month on postage, £1.5K a month on staff salaries, £1.75K a month on advertising & marketing plus there's motor costs, public liability insurance, telephone, internet costs, credit card charges, book keeping & accountancy fees, bank charges etc...
All these add up to way above £10K which is reconciled from the event profits as well.

Spice is a fun club for people to join. I love my job & getting to meet some of the most fantastic people & seeing them having fun. Spice is not a hugely profitable business for me but I get my sustenance from other things in life. It's really hard work I generally do at least 90hours every week but life's for living & myself & most Spice members are certainly doing that. I used to be in a highly paid & secure job before Spice & I wouldn't swap back for anything.

Donnie - I hope you don't mind me presenting a more realistic & fair view than your simple calculation above.

The next forum meet is at the Rawson Spring in Hillsborough on Wed 6th August at 7.30pm (its right next to a the tram stop so easy to get to). http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=375714 and the following meet is at the Harlequin in town on Mon 11th Aug http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=377729. I moved to the area at the beginning of the year and it has been a good way of meeting new people in Sheffield.

Hi,

Could really do with getting out and making a few new friends too. Just got back from 3 years at uni to find I've lost touch with a lot of my friends and/or they aren't moving back to Sheffield any time soon.

Having clicked a few of the links suggested in the thread it seems that many of the groups cater mainly for those 25+, same for the forum meets. As I'm only 20 going on 21, I would prefer to socialise/join groups with people closer to my own age

I've noticed quite a few people appear to be in the same boat, so if anyone wants to meet up for drinks/cinema/anything else then say so in this thread or PM me and maybe a group meet or something can be arranged?

Yep, I could also do with making some new mates and getting out a bit. I'm 20 have just dropped out of uni in Lancaster after a year, so am back at home in Sheffield, living with my parents for a year while I reapply for 2009 entry. And I've lost touch with most of my school mates/they're not in Sheffield/They'll be going back to uni in September. Glad to see some people in the same boat :), I'd be up for a pint some time.

Your sister could try Where Singles Go, they are starting to run a party night at the Beauchief Hotel on Abbeydale Road, Sheffield from Sun 24 Aug, ages 25+.

Where Singles Go will also be organising other social events for singles, so check their webpage wheresinglesgo.com or look facebook, they have a group listing.

Hope that helps.

Thanks!

I have found 2 bars in the city centre that are available for a weeknight meet, but one of the owners is on holiday until this Thurs. One would be available on a Fri night too. Both have a room with bar for 50-70 people. Once I know the full situation I'll post another response.

Hi, for those interested in a singles evening meet in the city centre, I'll know more in a few days. There is a choice of a Mon & Wed at one bar I've found, and another could provide facilities on a Fri and in the week too. Hoping to get something going early Sept.

This Sunday, 24 Aug, and Sun 31 Aug, Where Singles Go are having a "singles party night and disco" at the Beauchief Hotel on Abbeydale Road . If you are 25+ you should get in OK. Visit www.wheresinglesgo.com

I'm also considering setting up a weekday "lunchtime singles meets" in the city centre, ideal for those who work shifts and find getting to evening singles events difficult.
Cheers
Nick
