Went to see HP on Thursday and to be honest I still can't make up my mind as to what I thought of it!!

It was quite funny in places but I felt that a lot of things weren't explained properly.

What did everyone else think??

Read all the books, brilliant, but cant get on with any of the films. All the films seem to lose a lot of the plot. The films might be OK if you havent read the books.

I haven't read the books as I saw a film before I thought about reading them!! Gonna wait now and read em all after.

Was a decent movie, but as nothing happens in the books, it was fairly hard to make a movie about very little.

Overall, really good. Didn't care so much about the changes, just enjoyed it!

My problem with the film was that most of the book seemed to be about back story- Horcruxes and Voldemort and the like- but most of that was limited to two scenes in the film. It felt like a film made up of lots of incidental scenes without anything like a plot to hold it all together.

I thought it was funny in places but overall there wasn't enough to it.

This was the problem I had, it didn't seem to expand what I felt were the most important bits of the story

I will say this though; for the short time he was in it, I thought Draco was fantastic. He really did seem tortured when he was crying alone in the bathroom. If they weren't going to show many flashbacks, they should have included more scenes with Draco slowly going mad.

My kids enjoyed a lot at Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Frankly speaking, it is a boring movie.

I agree with the incidental scenes, the back story could have been made more clear and going on what they missed out in this one, god knows how they'll manage to tie all the loose ends together in the next two!

I went to see it on friday eve, and thought it had lost it's magic and the story was poor and wasn't going anywhere. It was fairly boring and I was disappointed with it.

Tis a "filler" movie though isn't it? Not seen it yet ... absolutely HATE going to the cinema and am going to have to gee myself up for a visit as daughter No. 2 has already seen it 3 times and it's my turn to go with her next.

After the magical realisation of the book in the first film they have got more tedious and less interesting. I've seen all the previous ones but frankly couldn't care less about this one. As for the Deathly Hallows - the book was boring enough!

obviously the death was meant to be the big factor of the film ........... i personally thought that it was not as good as the order of the phoenix. I have just started reading the first book as i have not read the books before ....

I saw the new Harry Potter film on Tuesday, was looking forward to it has i am a Potter fan read all the books and seen the other films. But i was disappointed in the new one that i could not wait till it was the end. It had lost something, and to now i don't know what but i did find it very boring.

Went to see the film, Never read any of the books. But I thought that the latest film diddn't realy get anywhere from start to finish, And was dissapointed with the ending, I know it follows on to the next book....Oh and also too much romance. :)

I've read the books but can't get into any of the films.

For me they just don't seem to capture the feel of the books in quite the right way.

I quite enjoyed the film though it seemed to end suddenly leaving questions - there wasn't much of a plot and too much backtracking, I also thought the romantic scenes rather contrived

I think this part was the worst for me, part of the storyline? Yes. Necessary enough to wipe out a third of the plot? No :loopy:

Bit crap.
poor acting as usual and rubbish plot.
The worse film scam out is to leave the end until the next film.
Crap way to try to make you watch the next in the series.
All in all, bit rubbish really.

I enjoyed the film thought it was the best of a bad bunch.
however, it did miss out some key moments and blew up the weasleys house for no reason which was fairly annoying :)

Not as good as the previous films in my opinion . However it kept me entertained for the duration of the film. :)

Well, im 41 and consider these films to be a bit of an escape from reality.
They are entertaining, but the latest one is rather dark, as though its geared towards a slightly more mature audience.
Worth seeing im my opinion - not that it counts for anything :hihi:

Crap!

That's a marvellously succinct review, Alien.

IMO the film doesn't move the story along very much, apart from the revelation of Voldermort's Horcrux, my overwhelming impression was that the film was marking time prior to the big finale of 'the deathly hallows.'

If you're a Harry Potter fan it isn't a bad film but there are better ones in the series, notably the 'Goblet of fire.'

There is another THREAD (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=497472) that covers this subject in the entertainment section.

I am a huge Harry Potter fan-I've lost count of the amount of times I've read the books-so the release of a new film is always exciting. I don't know why I haven't learned by now that the films are NEVER as good as the books:hihi:

Mantaspook-I presume you liked Goblet of Fire then? I really didn't, IMO it's the worst film. As a film, perhaps it IS fab, but I didn't like the fact that they may as well not have been telling the same story that the book does! It's quite interesting to hear people's opinions on the film when they haven't read the books-I think I may just be biased because I am so in love with the books. The first two films were amazing, the third was very good, wasn't a huge fan of Goblet of Fire, OotP was good to say it's not the most fast-moving book. Coming to the question that the OP actually asked (sorry :hihi: ) The Half Blood Prince. I loved the book, but then I love every one of the books ;) I've only seen the film once, and would like to go again before I cast in stone my opinions, but I didn't think it was bad-so much happens in the book it would have been difficult to get everything in. There were a couple of niggles, things they really got wrong-but nothing major that someone who didn't love Potter quite as much as me would spot ;)

Definatley worth seeing though-especially if you are a fan of the books. It's amazing watching everything come to life :)

Mod note: Please use the search function before starting a new thread, or pay attention to the 'similar threads' that are suggested when you begin a new thread (the old Potter opinion thread was top of the list when I just tested it). The older thread is still on the front page of Entertainment, so wasn't that hard to find.

Hi Littlemermaid,

I have to respectfully disagree with your opinion that the Goblet of Fire is the worst film in the series, I've read all the Harry Potter books prior to the films and whilst the celluloid version sometimes falls short of the readers own imagination I think Mike Newell, the director, did a first rate job.

You have to remember the GOF book was approximately twice the length of the previous Harry Potter books, compressing such a huge book into the time constraints dictated by the movie length must had given the screenwriters some major headaches, the director had to put aside a lot of the extraneous influences that didn't relate directly to Harry's journey.

As a result of this the film moves at a cracking pace, I'd concede there are some disjointed scene changes as the story flies along but under the circumstances I think the screenwriters got it about right.

Sometimes, when the film deviates from the book, I would wince if they'd made a hash of the plot, I didn't get that impression with the GOF film and the director made some good calls, particularly when he substituted Neville Longbottom as the gillyweed supplier instead of Dobby just before the underwater task - and just think how much that saved off the special effects budget - which hopefully they spent on the chuffing brilliant Dragons - it's a shame the film producers didn't show what happened to the other contestants but again, they did a very good of Harry's battle with the dragon and I would have loved to have seen Dumbledore's report to the school governors about the roof repairs. :hihi:

And let's not forget Brendan Gleeson's portrayal of mad eye Moody, or Miranda Richardson's Rita Skeeter, or my daughter's favourite character, Cedric Diggory; every time he appeared on the screen she'd whisper "Ohh Laa Laa!" - If the actor who played him ever crosses her path I'd fear for the poor lad's boxer shorts…

Slightly off topic but I'm really looking forward to 'The Time Travellers Wife' film. The book was brilliant but the film can only effectively cover one in three pages, it may be huge disappointment compared to the book, I fervently hope it isn't.

Hello  I love it people who can have a proper Potter discussion!!! :D

I definately see what you are saying regarding the Goblet of Fire film-and I know a lot of people who agree with you. I'm not even sure I can justify why I feel as I do about it! I half wish I could watch it as someone who hasn't read the book-I'm not entirely sure I would know what was going on. I think Barty Jnr was a most confusing charater in the film. It was the very ending of the film I found the most offensive-it barely explained anything at all about what had gone on all year.

The subsistute of Neville for Dobby was clever, but at the same time it's going to be a pain in the bum now to bring Dobby back for the last film and make his death mega emotional, when he hasn't been around in the films all the way through.

I have to admit being impressed with the scene where Voldemort returns though-I was cacking myself, just as I did when I read the book. I think Vodemort is an amazingly scary character! I remember being very afraid of him when I was younger, and I still am today, I'm slightly ashamed to admit:hihi:

The characters were very well cast, I have to agree with you there. I especially liked Rita Skeeter-she was so horribly flirtatious with Harry it made me feel a bit sick, which I think is exactly how the character is supposed to make you feel!

It will be interesting to see how they handle the last film. It will be weird, to see a Potter film not set in Hogwarts, just as the book was strange to read! But if they get it right, it will be spectacular! Especially the battle at the end! haddockman was lucky enough to win a competition to visit the film set earlier this year, and we got to meet Dan, Emma and Rupert, which was totally amazing, it really and truly made my year!. Since being there and seeing how passionate everyone is about what they are doing, I can appreciate more how difficult it really is to bring a story as complex as Potter to life. It's just a shame the films can't be longer!! I know it's not possible, but I'd be more then happy to sit in the cinema for hours and hours and hours and hours :D

I'm totally in agreement with you there with waiting for a while, given it a few weeks gonna give it another chance but I can guarantee I won't be impressed second time round either. I went with my other half who has experienced first-hand my fandom and his best friend who was sat with me tutting and shaking his head with me throughout the whole thing. I'm totally dumbfounded how they're going to backtrack and fit everything in for the final parts of the last film- it seems the more 'physical' aspects of the story unfolding i.e horcruxes are harder to represent than 'airy' things like relationships- will we just see another 6 hours of snogging?! *shudder*

Thing is, there's nothing a good book 1-7 re-read can't do to solve all film annoyances! :D

I thought it was the type of movie that leads you to a sequal .....so i don't think this movie will be truely appreciated untill the next movie comes out.

I personally quite enjoyed it, and thought there were some fairly decent funny bits in there, although, Ginny Weasley is beginning to get on my nerves a bit with the whole feeding Harry biscuits thing, and then tying his shoelaces for him. The next one should be more exciting, though!
