The other day i went to attercliffe snake shop for my crickets and locusts for my breadie and gecko`s and as usuall i always look at the snakes he has in and i really like the corn snakes he has. So after a while john the owner got one out and i held him and i was amazed at how gentle it was it was curous about me as me about it. Well i got home told debs and before i even finished she said NO NO NO you not having one in this house no way dont even go there lol:D but i been reading up and doing reasearch and finding out about them as i always do before i get anythin ie habitat diets and basic knowledge and i also asked questions when i was there as per usuall.lol I know debs will never allow a corn snake in house i think she thinks it will escape and do somethin lol. Well i like them and i`ll keep looking and reading lol

We have a corn snake, he's a really friendly chap! We got him as a baby and with regular handling he has been very well behaved. They are the easiest pets to keep, require minimal cleaning and feeding so are not time consuming pets. I think the tank can look really nice too, it's quite a feature in our room. I suppose the only downside is they don't really interact much with people so you don't get a lot out of owning one as a pet!

Corn snakes are a great first snake as there isnt much that you can go wrong with them all I will say is if you do get one keep it in a fanarium until your sure it cannot escape a vivarium they usually squeeze between they glass or rub it open.

Here's my collection - a few younger ones and a few adults... there's also a mexi-black king in there as well ;)

Corns will last in 9l Really Useful Box (from Staples) or a Faunarium for up to two years, at which point you can move them into a 50L RUB or a 3ft vivarium. I keep my largest adult in a 4'x1.5'x1.5' viv - this is probably a little excessive tbh.

Corns have varied personalities, for example you'll be told they don't like to climb - you can see thats cobblers from my pics! They are very responsive if they are handled regularly for short spells.

This is the best care sheet I've found - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm

And I've never had one escapee yet ;)

Best thing to do is to help her overcome her fears and introduce her to both young an old corns.

I had a stand at a charity fundraiser a few weeks back and took my tamest corn with me, the initial reaction was much the same as your other halfs sounds. Once people had actually got over their initial fear and held him they realised that they're aren't horrible, slimey creatures out to eat anything that moves they became much more interested.

I lot of peoples reservations relate more to the bad press snakes get. To this day as far as I know there has been no snake related fatality in the UK to date. There is also a large element of lack of education/understanding about the species - most people know what the crack is with mammals as most people have had one at some point in thier life!

If you go into either shop in Attercliffe (or Snakes N Adders near Birley) they'll be more than happy to show you a few of the adults.

If the worst does happen - this is about as serious as it'll ever get with a corn (http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad203/karlandclaire/IMG_4594.jpg)- I've had worse from my cat!!!

I have 4 corn snakes at my house, 3 are the orangey colour and 1 is a whitish colour. We get many eggs from them too. They are very gentle animals but my mum hates them. We currently have thme in a 5 foot tank. One time one of them escaped and we couldn't find it... my mum was going to move out of my house because she didn't want it creeping around in the house around her, when my little brother saw its head poking out of the back of the t.v.. the tank is now alot more secure. :) I think you should get one.

In the wild, Corn Snakes are individualists and in the main lead a solitary life. There is an ongoing debate as to whether captive Corn Snakes should be housed together. Some keepers can keep multiple specimens within one Vivarium with no problems, but others have found out the hard way not to keep Corn Snakes together as they become stressed. In general, some people would say that captive females can be kept together with no problems, but males have been known to harass each other particularly in the breeding season, so should be kept singly.

It is recommended that adult animals of opposite sex should be kept apart unless you want to breed from them.

If you do house your Corn Snakes together, make sure you check on them regularly so any problems can be sorted out immediately. They should also be fed separately outside the vivarium, to ensure they do not compete for food.

Taken from http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm

There's no right or wrong, personally I wouldn't keep them together as it makes it difficult to identify problems and if one snake contracts something (like mites or a respirtory infection) they'll all get it, but each to their own.

My cheapest was my amelanistic (£20), most expensive was my Butter (£110 and had to go to Rugby).

Have a look here (http://iansvivarium.com/cornmorphs.php) for the different morphs available, some are rarer than others.

Corns will eat one mouse a week. Just running one corn you will struggle to spend more than £5 a month on food.

If you keep you're corn on a thermostat, the heat mat/buld is on for only a small portion of the day, so they take up very little energy.

The most expensive part of snake ownership is habitat. There are two ways you can do this...

1) The 'cheap n easy' Breeders way
- Buy a 9L Really Useful Box (£5), a heat mat(£10), a MiniStat100 (£15) and a digital thermometer (£5). Use newspaper for bedding (30p) and butter tubs for hides (£0!). you can then pick up a cheap water bowl from Pets@Home (£2).

This way caters for all the snakes basic needs and you're animal will thrive in this environment. For a lot of snakes the opaque nature of the RUBs makes them feel more secure. As the snake grows you nip down to Staples and buy a larger RUB and replace the hides.

2) The 'Pet Keepers' way
For this you'll need all the above for a hatchling snake, but as it gets older you'll need to buy a 3x2x2 vivarium (£70-£100), Ceramic heat emitter + guard (£45), pulse thermostat (£40), hides (£20), water bowl (£5) and other viv furniture.

If you local to handsworth you more than welcome to come and view my collection, but I'd recommend getting down to Snakes N Adders to see their RUB & Vivarium set ups and see which you prefer.
