View Full Version : Violins? And where I can get one dirt cheap, rather.
shotoikari 19-07-2009, 19:53 Hi, I've recently had a big interest in music and started learning the guitar (5 months strong :D) but I've always wanted to learn the violin.
Now I hear it's very hard so I was wondering where I could possibly buy a cheap violin incase I can't hack it :/
Had a very quick look on the net though not too sure where to look and figured you guys'd be the best place to ask.
(Also; hope this is the right place to start this thread )
Thanks :)
Being a professional violinist myself, some of my past pupils rented their instruments to start off. If learning the violin proves difficult and you end up not enjoying learning it then the rented instrument can be returned with no financial loss to yourself.
On the other hand, there are cheap violin outfits (violin, bow and case) that can be purchased for under £100. Having said that, if, like above, you don't enjoy the instrument then there is the chore choice of selling it.
There are shops like Alan Kings pianos in Sheffield who may be able to help. Internet is a great source but be wise in what you buy.
Hope that helps
Alan
shotoikari 19-07-2009, 20:31 Well when I was younger I attempted guitar and gave it up (and have now come back to it for good) so if I buy one then there's a good chance I'll only go on hiatus lol :)
Do you know any trusted shops in sheffield? (also websites if possible)
Not sure how cheap you are aiming for but my daughter has just given up the violin despite getting a merit in her ABRSM Grade 3. So we have a full size Gliga Gems2 (http://www.elidatrading.co.uk/gliga.htm) violin for sale. It is a year old, in perfect condition and comes with case, rosin, bow and an electronic tuner. I could even throw in some beginners and intermediate music books. The Gliga violins are pretty highly regarded (http://www.abrsm.org/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t16545.html).
Let me know via PM if you are interested, otherwise it goes on eBay in the next few weeks. You would be welcome to come round and give it a try.
I got mine from ebay for £30 (plus £10 p and p). I don't know how good it is but it suits my purposes given how little time I have to learn it!
It's also purple, which was the main buying point for me. Shallow, I know :D

:o have you used it yet? is it ok? (if it is, I may have to try the bay myself :|)
Gosh that is soooo shallow, though they better have black one! :P
It's fine. Not sure about my playing of it though!! I thought that if I was just buying one to learn folk music on, not taking it too seriously, then it didn't have to be a superb fiddle so I might as well get a fun (funky?) one!
shotoikari 23-07-2009, 16:50 I've found a normal looking one for £30 (with case and stuff) prolly won't sound amazing lol but we'll see - my guitar's cheap but it doesn't sound too bad
It's not cool and purple though
Annaleigh 28-07-2009, 15:37 I Can sell you one for fifty x
Includes case and bow
Interesting... when I offered her money for it she told me she'd sold it to a family friend. It's a Lark - you can get one for about £20-30 on ebay!

Found a nice full set on the bay for £40. Case and everything.
Do you know what make yours is? £40 sounds a good price for something like a second hand Stentor - they're about £150 for brand new. Let me know if you want some starter lessons (think I sent you a pm about it!) to get you pointed in the right direction.
