View Full Version : Searching for a diet buddy
simplymel 18-07-2009, 17:38 Hi im looking for a diet buddy or anyone in a simular situation who i can have some chats with. Im 23 years old nearly 24 and really overweight. Ive always been big and to be honest ive always ignored the fact and just hid behind the; "im big boned.... all my family are big.... i like being curvey.." etc till recently when i went to the doctors for a completely different reason but the conversation turned to; what are you doing about your weight?
By the end i was in tears, ive been told ive GOT TO lose weight. It sounds really silly but i never realised id got so big! I knew i was big, just not as big as i am.
Doctor has told me to reduce my cals and have a low fat diet, ive also been given orlistat to take. Im ashamed to say it but my BMI is double what it should be, ive got around 11 stone to lose. Just thinking about it depresses me... ive got such a long way to go.
Il be starting at the gym again soon, probably be pondsforge. so hopefully that will help :)
Any one who is in a simular situation or would just like to be friends please get in touch. Ive only lived in sheffield two years and not really made any friends here yet. Im wanting to meet people who wont judge me or look down on me. Im a nice person who used to be really bubbly, just a bit down at the thought of how much weight ive got to lose.
oh im melissa btw:) im currently a 26/28 and wanting to get down to a 14/16
simplymel 18-07-2009, 18:30 had some lovely people send me messages :) thank you x
I really hope you find someone to be your diet buddy, it is so hard trying to loose that much weight without some one there to motivate you i lost just over 6 stone a few years back and many times i just wanted to give up until a friend came to the gym with me and helped me get motivated. Hope you succeed in your weight loss goal. GOOD LUCK

I've also just been given Orlistat to take! I'm starting it on monday, bit worried about the side effects though. My BMI just hit 39 so i've also got a long way to go. PM me if you like, would be good to share experiences! :)
iceblast 19-07-2009, 10:56 Sent you a PM ;) x
Airport Cars 19-07-2009, 11:12 I started with Slimming World last October - and as a middle aged man going alone it was a big step.
Made to feel welcome from the off, great team leader and great people who go there. I've been about 5 st over weight for many years and I lost 2 1/2 st in about 6 months. Still going but the weight loss has slowed (ok I admit I've slipped up a few times recently).
It is purely a matter of willpower. Could I cut out the rubbish in my diet - crisps, chocolate, biscuits (I have a terrible sweet tooth)? Yes I could. I proved it - and I never once went hungry because of what's available in the meal planners.
Good luck - although I imagine you've taken the biggest first step by posting on here.
pixieguk 19-07-2009, 13:14 hi melissa, i started a diet a couple of weeks ago, im trying to keep fats and sugars out of my diet i eat alot of snack a jacks, rivitas and cottage cheese lol as well as apples, carrots etc I have lost 10lb so far and im hoping to join the unlimited gym scheme but i will be mostly using hillsborough perhaps, unless i get hooked on ponds forge - i havent checked it out there yet. good luck on the diet, hope to hear back from you x
tjsarcat09 19-07-2009, 14:34 hi i joined weight watchers 8 weeks ago and have so far lost 21lb , i find having to go and get weighed is better encouragement to lose weight then going it alone
feel free to pm me anytime you want a chat
I do Slimming World and really reccomend it,we have a good giggle up at the club, usually at my expense being one of the few men there.I've lost 4 stone in total, never altered my drinking habit one bit(app 34 pints per month).Tons to eat too!
simplymel 19-07-2009, 21:44 Sorry ive not replied sooner everyone... thank you for all your messages :) and congratulations to all of you who have lost weight! im kinda nervous now :S lol
Good on you for posting this thread, I suspect you have helped some people by bringing this up. Good luck to everyone who is actively doing something to help improve their lives you have got my respect and prayers.
Don't forget losing weight is not just about cutting down on your food intake, it is about eating more of the 'right' foods and less of the 'bad' foods but you also have to excersice.
I bought a pedometer about a month ago and I can't tell you what a difference it has made to me, it was only one of the basic ones counting steps (let's face it they can never be accurate in telling you how far you have walked or how many calories you have burnt off) but it has really helped to get me more active.
It really is a matter of will power, but you can all do it if you really want to!!!!!!!
Good luck to you all and please keep us updated on your progress.
grababargin 20-07-2009, 14:45 well i got wieghed this morning.........although i didnt loose anything last week, i only lost 1lb this week, but i supose its better than putting it on.
SUGARPLUMKIN 03-08-2009, 10:53 Hi Sweetie!
I am also very overweight & like yourself need to lose over 10stones.
Also like yourself I am new to Sheffield, as I only moved here 1 year ago & so far dont have many friends.
I start the condition managment programme next week through the job centre, designed for people to ovecome there health problems & get back into work.
I will be given a free 3 month gym pass for ponds forge so if you would like to meet up there to exercise that would be great, as im also looking for a gym buddy.
I recently joined a self help group for overweight people to help & support each other to lose weight & get fit.
Its called "FEEL FREE" & is totally free of charge.
Its held on Weds at 7pm-9pm on Harbour Avenue (opposite Manor Park medical centre).
Its for men as well as women, but so far only 11 women have joined, but no men.
We all sit round a large table & chat over a cuppa, while each of us takes it in turn to get weighed (also measured monthly which is optional).
Then when everyone been weighed/measured, we do something different each week to help & encourage us to lose weight.
It may be an exercise dvd, a guest speaker may give an interactive session on belly dancing, yoga, healthy eating, etc. We may get the exercise equipment out or have a pamper session or maybe go for a gentle walk.
Its run for members by members so members can suggest ideas & have a say on what we do.
Theres an optional "pot of gold" where each week members add £1 to a jar, then at the end of 10 weeks, the person who has lost the most weight wins 3/4 of the contents of it & the runner up wins 1/4 of it.
The last jar won contained £87 pounds, so its a good incentive, but this is optional.
would you like to meet up with me for a coffee in town?
Im available most days & times.
I will PM you my phone number so we can have a chat if you like?
I look forward to meeting you.
Kind regards!
Sugarplumkin xx
SUGARPLUMKIN 03-08-2009, 10:56 Hi!
If anyone else would would like to come along to "FEEL FREE" ON WEDS AT 7PM-9PM, then please PM me & I will get back to you soon.
Kind regards!
Sugarplumkin xx
clevercow 03-08-2009, 11:45 orlistat is great. ive lost 10pound in just over a month and that not really cutting anything out, just eating a little better. Orlisat also stops you from feeling as hungry. Just remember if you eat something high in fat means your going to be getting rid of a lot of fat. Also make sure you have lots of bleach and toilet cleaner at your house(better to know now)
I find that going on the scales every week can be a bit disheartning. Try only weighing your self once a month. Im not very over weight and im 6ft so looking at me you would say i was over weight but on those doctors charts i am. Its all about how you feel in your self. Dont over do it at the gym 1 hours work out 3 to 4 time a week is more than enough. just do cv as well dont try lifting lots of weights (muscle weights more than fat). Also dont say NO to yourself. Having 1 bag or crisp isnt gunna kill you. but just dont eat then everyday and dont eat more than 1 bag at a time if you get what i mean.
Good luck hope it all go's well and keep us informed. :)
simplymel 03-08-2009, 12:02 Thanks for all your messages eveyone :))
Well ive been dieting for two weeks now and ive lost 7lbs! :)) i prefer to say half a stone lol
Its probably just in my head but i actually feel like my hips have got smaller which is really good. Im really proud of myself... tho it hasnt been easy.
I didnt realise how bad my diet was untill now :O
This week has been the hardest, even had a huge chunk of cheesecake yesterday. Which made me feel really bad and since having that im wanting to go back to my old habbits :(
BUT im not giving up, im sure im going to have odd slip ups now and again. Just a case of thinking right, its a new day :)
gal-tray 03-08-2009, 14:29 WOW!!!!!!!!! thats a fantastic start, you are doing great, you will have little blips along the way this is a life long thing to watch your weight, just draw a line under it and you will be fine, keep up the good work and you will see the pounds fall away x:thumbsup:
hi, dunno if i can help but someone i kno lost over 6stone on slimming world... hope everything goes okk for you hunni xxx leah
Hi, I also need to lose about 6 stones and im on a viscious circle, I have diabetes and need to lose weight but the medication I take makes it harder to lose. Ive been to the hospital again today and the dr wants to talk to me about a gastric bypass, I hadnt realised I was actually that big and its certainly given me something to think about. I have a 6 yr old and having the op could give me more time with them but the op could kill me, without the op my health will kill me.......what do i do? xx
LegalBlonde 03-08-2009, 18:31 Hi I have just moved to Sheffield I am not really dieting right now but if you are looking for people to chat to online I could not recommend sparkpeople.com more, I used it in May when I went on a crash bikini diet and it is amazing, you can track all of the food you eat to see how many calories you use, set up exercise programmes, they have workout videos on youtube, and they have a huge community of forums and pages a bit like facebook to motivate each other and everyone is sooo nice. And it is all free!!
When I first went on it I thought I was great as it is all American but there are loads of people from here on it, loads of Yorkshire people, there is Northern English Lasses forums etc I could not recommend it more.
I haven't been using it lately but want to get back in shape, if you, or anyone, does go on it, look me up my name is LegallyTink.
Good Luck! :)

Has anyone seen this or tried it/thought about it? I am not advocating it! But it is interesting.
RobbyBrown 04-08-2009, 07:10 Friend of mine is constantly in a fit over his body shape and its about time he realised its "whats inside that counts"
He is a real porker, and I have told him when on Holiday NOT ONE PERSON will notice the fact he is a tubby, porky lardass. I also told him to ask the reps to put on a "Pool Bellyflop contests", as he is likely to win and so get a free bottle of bubbly.
Why do overweight people get so obsessed ?

Are you overweight? cos i can completely understand how your mate feels.
Being overweight your an easy target to verbal abuse, i cant talk for others but ive had people shout things at me or comment about me which makes you feel crap. Knowing it can happen puts you on edge alittle, especially in new places.
Saying that, i know people who are big and really dont care, i guess its all down to self confidence, but calling him a tubby porky lardass wont help that will it?

fatboyslim 05-08-2009, 15:31 Hi simplimel,
Like others on here I lost a load of weight with slimming world so I can recommend it.
The best thing for me however was a recent course that I went on where it gave guidance on things like understanding food labels, cooking methods etc and making small lifestyle changes that are more sustainable than crash diets etc.
I think I remember most of the stuff we learned so pm me if you want any more info.
Good luck and keep smiling.

oohhh what course was it?
fatboyslim 05-08-2009, 21:40 It was run by Sheffield Hallam Uni and was called "Small Changes" we finished last week. Unfortunately I don't think there is another one in the foreseeable future due to lack of funding, I can however pm their contact details onto you if you want to enquire about future courses?
We found it very worthwhile.
simplymel 05-08-2009, 21:43 do you have to be a student to do it? just thinking with it being run by sheffield hallam uni.
PrincessKate 05-08-2009, 21:45 That diet is similar to cambridge diet i did a while back and yes while giving extreme weight loss and at the rate of about a stone a month, it can make you ill, my hair fell out and few other people i knew did too, makes you constipated, and the cravings didnt go away they got worse lol it was a nightmare, i put it all back on and more some within weeks!!

which diet?
RobbyBrown 05-08-2009, 21:51 I have to ask this guys, and simplymel I was not being nasty to my friend, simply making him realise its whats on the inside that counts.
Why not do some excersise and eat a sensible diet? everyone knows that you pile the weight back on when you stop dieting (plus a bit more)
simplymel 05-08-2009, 21:58 True. But im trying to change my life style not just a diet that id finish once ive lost the weight.
PrincessKate 05-08-2009, 22:36 which diet?
The one further up with the link to, that bloke lost 10 or 11 stone in 6 months.
fatboyslim 06-08-2009, 07:20 do you have to be a student to do it? just thinking with it being run by sheffield hallam uni.
No you don't. I will pm you. :)
simplymel 06-08-2009, 08:31 The one further up with the link to, that bloke lost 10 or 11 stone in 6 months.
Think its tempting just cos its a quick fix isnt it? you KNOW your gonna lose weight. Thats why id be tempted. BUT i know its not the right way for me because i want my lifestyle to change, i want to lose weight and keep it off. Not lose the\ weight then put it all back on again.
Finding it hard at the moment tho :(
I'm going to join slimming world tonight in Crookes. I've always struggled with my weight (that and i love to eat all the wrong things)
I'm type 2 diabetic trying to manage with diet but as it's so poor I'm not managing very well!
I lost 3 stone on slimming world a few years back but just fell off the wagon and I really want to get it kick started again.
Does anyone go to the Crookes meeting on Monday? I'm new to the area and I don't really know what to expect.
simplymel 27-08-2009, 14:30 Still looking to meet people who are wanting to lose weight, met lots of really nice people. Thank you to all of you:)
chefkicker 27-08-2009, 15:41 Still looking to meet people who are wanting to lose weight, met lots of really nice people. Thank you to all of you:)
Im hoping to lose weight over ramadan ;)
Most people put weight on over the ramadan fast but how i intend to do it is by doing light training closer to sunset to keep the metabolism ticking over.
It seems to be working (well were only 6 days in so far or is it 5 ???)
