View Full Version : Shiregreen area
little jo 01-12-2003, 22:23 i have just had an offer accepted on a house in shiregreen and wondered what people thought bout the area. is there any trouble in particular parts or is it generally trouble free
i used to live at the top end of southey green but it's nearly 12 years since i was there,
awaiting your opinions
little jo
The Shiregreen goes in swings and roundabouts like any other estate, we can go months without any trouble then it flairs up again mainly joy riders and kids on motorbikes or just a gang hanging around a street corner drinking cheap cider.
Then in summer a few garden huts get broken into
Pm me and i will tell you where all the thiefs live if you are moving anywhere the Hartley Brook Area?

It's haunted up there. Stay away from the devil worshippers of Windmill Lane church and the little people of Wincobank..........
Err...the only signs of life I see up Wincobank Hill are burnt out cars
Would you care to provide us with further information?
If you contact the local cop shop, they'll tell you what to watch out for...
Shiregreen, for all its bad reputation and faults, is a nice area to live, it's just spoiled by a group of retards whose sole aim in life is to cause trouble.... :x

*Twinkle* 02-12-2003, 16:33 My boyfriend lives at Shiregreen, so I am in the area quite often. He lives close to Bellhouse road, which doesn't seem too bad an area, other than a few thugs hanging round on the streets at night.
Saying that....you don't catch me walking round there at night! I always catch the bus from Firth park to go 3 stops because it's pretty eerie!
I admit that red church on Windmill Lane overlooking Firth Park looks strange, but I'd call it...special. You get some amazing views from up there.
Please, tell me why you all think it's scary! Do you mean scary as in intimidating or as in spooky? I am researching into the history of North East Sheffield (as a personal history project) and would love to know more.
Many thanks

Oooo just the yobs that look at you as though they're going to rob you... Errrmmm the dim streetlights, if there even is any!
Dunno..... I just get a feeling...
Yes Caprice...I understand what you mean. After 6pm on a dark winter night, Firth Park can feel like a ghost town
(no pun intended, and I don't wish to scare you ;) )

I wasn't aware that the Police provided such a personal service. Judging solely by the reputation of some of the pubs in the area I would say that there might be a fair few rogues operating within the area. Not likely to be all bad though, quite a lot of OAPs are resident there which is never a bad thing.
Most of the trouble pubs in the area have been knocked down now.its very rare to get any trouble in the pubs on the Shiregreen these days
I understand what your saying with regards to the Horseshoe etc. But, have those people suddenly stopped drinking?
8) Yeah i never worked that out that they must drink somewhere else  but all the pubs i go in on the Shiregreen i haven't heard of any trouble lately and i live up here ;)

If you ask them of course they'll tell you what to look out for and what you can do to protect yourself. That being part of the police forces job n all.

Sam Miguel 07-02-2004, 15:29 I was brought up very successfully on The Shiregreen, and lived there for about 20 years, I'll have you know. So please leave this fine estate alone.
I wouldn't be the fine upstanding citizen I am now if I hadn't got a bit of Shiregreen in me, I can tell you.

The wonders of Bellhouse Road
Sicey Avenue, too
Where lies my old abode
My brother lives there now - next to Sue
..and Glenn.
And at the other side there's Rich
and Sharon his wife
they've got a garden as big as a football pitch
and they seem to enjoy their life.
The Shiregreen Hotel is just down the road
and the brook where we used to catch sticklebacks in spring
and we'd take them home in jam jars - usually a load
it was just something we did, just a thing.
Ecclesfield Park was near
we'd go down there tro play football or cricket or just lay on the grass - or sometimes play tennis
I'd lay there for ages until the pubs opened and I was sort of ready for a beer
and the parkies name, as far as I know , was Dennis.
I have to finish this poem now about the lower Shiregreen and I suppose I have mentioned Eccclesfield as well
As I'm fresh out of words and my stellas run dry
I need a refill ( it rhymes if you say it the right way)
So off to the fridge I go for in this house there is no last bell.
Are there any areas in particular within Shiregreen that people would recommend as been nice, or similarly are there any that you would want to avoid? I kind of get the impression there are a few bad people dotted around all over the area from reading this thread, but then you get that anywhere.

Hi march :) Have you not found anywhere at Handsworth? I'm hardly Shiregreen's number one fan, but if you're hearts set on the area, then you *should* be safe anywhere other than the bottom of shiregreen (where the 47 and 48 buses cross)... Thats where I've seen most trouble and thats where I close my eyes and think Oh my god get me home... lol
Once again, I'd advise you to keep away from the shops... Nethershire shops have a nice collection of thugs who eye you up as you walk by... (Possession detectors I call them...) But with any place, there's always going to be kids congregating around the shops so just avoid shops in general lol
I have still got a couple of places in Handsworth to look at but the prices are getting stupid. A house on the market for about 74k ended up going for nearly 90! Also started looking at Intake / Frecheville but it was a similar story there.
Up untill I started having a proper look round and started seeing what houses end up going for, Shiregreen and other areas in North Sheffield where on my "no" list but I've had to think again.
Do you have any idea what road that is where you said it was particularly bad?
I don't know if you will know this but is all of the area up from Firth Park to Ecclesfield (sp?) road pretty much all Shire Green?
*Twinkle* 16-04-2004, 16:44 Do you have any idea what road that is where you said it was particularly bad?
Sorry, I don't... I have my eyes shut by then hehe

Oooh on my territory now :) I'm from Richmond, but I'm a stone's throw away from Intake :) There's a house going just off mansfield road (only 2 beds though) thats around 55k... But if prices are rising in the area, it should end up around 60-65k... I will take a look for you and send you a link if its not been sold :) I can tell you its on a nice road without too many kiddies around etc (and believe me, I'm choosy so it must be ok if I say it is lol)
Squeaker 12-02-2006, 11:27 What this area like now guys?
Windmillgal 03-07-2006, 15:38 I have lived on Windmill for most of my life - the area is fine - the Council seem to want to bring it down completely and therefore house all the no marks around us - pity they don't decide to house them in their areas to see what they have done.
Windmill Lane rules
i used to live at shiregreen for over 20 years,i think its got a lot worse over the past couple of years,
i would recomend staying away from nethershire shops,we go to the chip shop every friday and can gaurantee that there will be 20+ youths all drinking cheap cider outside the co-op and the local drug dealer selling to people pulling up in cars
