View Full Version : Windows 7 - Did you get a pre-order in?
RyoHazuki 18-07-2009, 11:16 So cheapo pre-order day for Windows 7 has been and gone. It was supposed to go on for much longer than it did, as all "stocks" ran out within hours. Did you manage to get one at the low price, or are you just playing the waiting game?
I got an order in for the Home edition on Play for £50, but I'm still undecided as to whether I'll actually be using it or just selling it on for a bit of profit. I'm mostly a Linux user, but I do use XP too for games. I'm a bit concerned about compatibility with some of my older games like Vice City and Knights of the Old Republic etc. As it is, on my XP everything obviously is running sweetly. Not sure if I want to upset that with a new OS.I'm going to do a bit of reading up on it for a couple of months and see how it all looks. I'd try the RC, but don't fancy borking my current triple boot setup.
Let me know what your opinions are of it, and whether you'll be buying it or not.
goldenfleece 18-07-2009, 12:06 No sticking with XP pro Sp3...at least for the rest of this year

XP's going to be supported untill 08/04/2014 so there's no rush to replace it!
Do you know if they are going to ditch Vista or keeping it supported for a few years. It will seem a bit of a handful to have 3 OS running at the same time. But I suppose if they are all making money they will continue with them.
RyoHazuki 18-07-2009, 12:27 XP's going to be supported untill 08/04/2014 so there's no rush to replace it!
I didn't know that! That's another five years then. That's pretty good for such an old OS, but then again if there is a big rush to Windows 7, XP could just be left behind. At the moment Vista didn't touch it, but W7 is getting a lot of plaudits. Like I say, I've got the order in, but still not sure if I'll be using it over XP and Linux.
Support generally just means security patches. No enhancements or anything.
I got a pre-order in for 7 Pro :)

How does this work?
alankearn 18-07-2009, 18:32 How does this work?
At present (in fact for the last few weeks) if you buy a computer with Vista installed you will automatically qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 7. This I think will apply till the 22nd October 2009 when the computer makers like Dell will be allowed by Microsoft to install the Windows 7 operating system

So you've obviously not read *any* reviews/feedback/comments about W7 across the net then? And these comments etc are all based on beta and release candidate software not final.
get it qik 18-07-2009, 19:10 no not read reviews etc
i have tried w7 as i have a disc for it with free product key once released and i didn,t like it and i went back to xp
but thats my view
some people like vista some don,t
RyoHazuki 18-07-2009, 19:25 It's true though - XP is like bloody lightning on relatively recent hardware. I have AMD X2 5200+, 3Gb RAM and Nvidia 9800GT, and it's very, very fast, both to boot up and in general use.
I haven't used W7 so I don't know how that will be in comparison, and I have never even used Vista! Have no intentions of either.
Preacher Man 18-07-2009, 19:29 just got mine from pcworld online, £45 delivered.
using the Release Candidate and i love it! hated vista, loved xp but windows 7 is unbelievably good. my ageing pc runs it pretty nicely even with a performance score of 4.7!
It will seem a bit of a handful to have 3 OS running at the same time.
They've (MS) supported more than 3 OSs in the past (95/98/Me/2k & XP).
RyoHazuki 19-07-2009, 10:29 They've (MS) supported more than 3 OSs in the past (95/98/Me/2k & XP).
Yeah. It's not so much a problem for MS, but more of an issue for applications and games programmers, who have to consider every end user's configurations and setups. But then, that's always going to be an issue with all kinds of OS's and software isn't it?
It's really sounding like W7 is going to take off. Does anyone here have a clue how long it could run for? I don't really fancy buying into an OS that isn't going to last long, like Vista for example. I'm kinda feeling that public support for this could be very big, like XP, so that may result in a long life span for it. What do you guys reckon?
alankearn 19-07-2009, 10:45 Windows 7 still going for £45 here other sites are charging around £70/90 Amazon being one of them

Shefford 20-07-2009, 15:06 I heard the super cheap pre-orders had been cancelled by M$ because of huge demand?!
BBC website is saying:
"Amazon said that sales of Windows 7 in the first eight hours it was available outstripped those of Windows Vista's entire 17 week pre-order period."
Just made an order with Currys based on the super cheap rates and it seemed to go through....
I'll wait with baited breath...
melthebell 20-07-2009, 20:20 seems popular then?
alankearn 21-07-2009, 07:51 seems popular then?
At £45 now and a predicted price of £150 at the end of the year is the reason why there is a large demand.

not purely that its supposed to be better than vista?
alankearn 21-07-2009, 18:16 not purely that its supposed to be better than vista?
I should have added this to my post
goldenfleece 22-07-2009, 11:44 I must admit I am rather hooked on this new Windows....went back to Xp for a while after trying the RC, but now gone back to the RC again....with just a bit more polishing, it will be the best ever version of Windows.....
melthebell 23-07-2009, 18:39 just seen the following posted on another forum....one ive been on longer than this one...and i do trust most of the regs
"I've just bought the Home Premium version (plus a pair of jeans, come to that in a sec) for £35 plus delivery.
Go to www.additionsdirect.co.uk and create a new account. Add W7 Home Premium (£49.99) and something else for greater than £10. When you get to the checkout, at the bottom you can enter a discount code. Enter ZG314. £30 will then be knocked off the bill. You have to spend over £60 for the code to work.
