We are currentley feeding royal canin complete dry food which was initially recommended to us by our vet as diamond was v underweight when we got her. She is now up to a healthy weight and although this may sound awful I can't afford to keep paying £46.00 for a 15kg bag so am looking to move to a cheaper but good quality alternative. Any ideas?

She has a bit of a dicky tummmy, when we first got her we tried wagg and iams both of which upset her. I am also keen to stick to a one colour food without the coloured bits and want to keep her on dry food.

While we were at the dogs unleashed day recetley we were given some samples of free food. The one we were innterested in is called commmand performance and seems v similar to royal cannine but cheaper. has anyone heard of it? The lady I spoke to told me how great it was but obviously it was her product she was trying to sell. I have a sample of it but donnt want to try her on it until I've finished her royal cannin.

Any suggestions welcome thanks

Have Pm'd you

Our 15kg sacks of Royal Canin are between £37.99 and £39.99. £46 does seem quite steep

diamond - have you tried the little pet shop near to Matalan? they have allsorts of food and give great advice, plus they don'twant to take your money, they'd rather save you a few pounds so might be worth a try. I pay £6.99 for 8kgs of chicken and rice.

I'm amazed wagg upset her - its nearly as boring as Gordon Brown. We were recommended GUsto when we got our new boxer. Its a high protein food though, which we've found makes Sammy more hyper than usual so we went back to basic wagg.
Pets @ Home own stuff is decent for the more sensitive dog.
Not one of them costs over £20 a sack.

I use Gusto for my dogs it suits all four and they really enjoy it, their food costs about £14 every 2 weeks.
I haven't noticed any of them being more hyper but then it would be hard to tell in a couple of cases

Command performance is by a company called C.S.J.

It is only available by the internet.I have 4 cavs and a Japanese chin, 2 of whom are prone to colitis. They are all on C.S.J lamb and rice at £19 a sack . I buy 2 sacks at a time and delivery is £ 6 and very reliable.

I highly recommend C.S.J. My lot were on Burns before and there has been no change in their condition coat poos etc.

Many of my friends at my agility club use it too and are very pleased.

Please PM if I can be of further help.

They have given me a sample of the salmon one to try her on as that had the correct levels of protein ect for her. I thought chappie was poor quality but have had people recommend it? any thoughts? Have tried pets at home own and it upsets her tum!! Thankyou for the Pm holidayhutch when I've decided what we are going to put her on I'll Pm you back

Dry mix is no good for dogs, it has no nutrients and dosent nourish the dog enough. The best way to feed a dog is raw both of my dogs are fed raw it is cheaper and better for the dogs. This is sold behind towsure in Hillsborough the shop is called real pet grub £8.00 for 20lb of meat-Rabbit,Venison,Tripe,Beef,Chicken,Turkey and more.

I think we've tried every available complete food (and now don't use any of them!) whilst trying to get Molly's tummy settled.

Have you looked up Skinners? That seems to be very gentle on the tummy, even with a GSD who has a dodgy tum. Of course, being Molly and totally uninterested in most food, she wouldn't eat it and preferred to go hungry rather than eating any of the complete foods

CSJ were also at the dogs unleashed show and we've tried their food before - its EXTREMELY good.

CSJ do a very basic complete natural food - can't remember what its called but give them a call - they are very helpful - and i think its about £10 per sack plus delivery and its definately NOT full of rubbish - so may be good for her now she's turned the corner.

jenna - that sounds really good value and I bet there isn't a single dog that would be turning their nose up at that lot. Often they refuse to eat it cos its just like rotten carboard that we have been programmed to believe is 'what they have to have'.

A market companies dream

Molly is now living on meat from that shop too! They do a lovely range and there's rarely any left- Molly has 1lb of meat and 2 scoops of mixer a day and is looking glossy and healthy with heaps of energy, and she's actually interested in eating a proper meal twice a day which is completely different to the days of trying to persuade her to eat complete dry food.

The Rivelin farm shop does really lovely quality home made dog food (basically minced offcuts and offal) raw for £1.60 ish per kilo too- that's nice for a treat.

Bakers is one of the worst feeds on the market just look at the colour of it for a start. Colourings, chemicals and artificial additives all lead to a hyper poo machine, whos poo is a wonderful sloppy colourful affair. Bakers use the colours to make you (the consumer) think it looks tasty which is determent to the dog. One dog trainer quoted Bakers as being "rocket fuel for dogs".

Wagg has good reports if you want a cheaper alternative. I use Burns for mine and have for years as its the only food I am happy to feed mine, the thing with foods such as JW, Canin and Burns is that you feed less than you would of the Bakers as the dog gets more nutrients for a smaller amount. You would need to feed twice as much Bakers to get the same nutrition.

I know this is an old thread but... I am currently feeding our Saint on Purina Beta large breed puppy food, which is well over 30 quid a sack. Our other 2 dogs are fed on CJS but they dont do a large breed puppy food. Can anyone recommend anything a bit cheaper, but without being full of crap?

Not wanting to sound as though I am having a go at those that are feeding their dogs on £30 sacks of food a month but my dogs love the complete meal in 25kg sacks from Joblot mixed with some morrisons gravy mix (to soften the biscuits) and the leftovers from our dinner the night before.. Both are well built and healthy with shiny coats and wet noses and it costs me £7.99 a sack ??? If my dogs thrive on it why pay over three times more to make your dog spoilt ?
Dogs will eat when hungry, why give them high nourishment/price food all the time that they will expect all the time ??

I'm not a believer in food snobbery either, but there are definitely some animals which aren't suited for some foods and some which need really decent nutrients for all sorts of reasons.

When we got Molly she was desperately underweight with a skeleton which was way too small for her paws, ears and tail (and that's never really got a lot better) and with really dry, broken off fur. She's also the least food orientated dog you could ever meet and she is quite happy to not eat for a week rather than to eat something that she doesn't like- even with the food she does like she's prone to not eating at all if I'm not there at food time.

On top of that every processed food we tried caused diarrhoea, from the cheapest to the most expensive. If a £5 food suited her then she'd eat a £5 food, if a £40 food suited her then she'd have a £40 food. I'm perfectly happy that she's on raw food that costs somewhere between the two, she loves it and it doesn't give her diarrhoea. The cost was not an issue at all.

Ailsa has real problems with the projectile runs if she eats certain dried foods or gets anywhere near certain raw foods too. The safest products weve found to suit her are Burns with Natures Menu or Nature Diet, or Arden Grange dried if we run out of Burns and cant get hold of any locally in time. Funnily enough, chomping on maltezers never seems to upset her stomach but give her IAMS, James Wellbeloved or most of the cheaper brands and she is trotting to the yard and back every hour!

Hi
I have a retired greyhound with a very sesnitive tum, and think i have finally found a food (many poo bags later!) that gives hima a lovely poo, coat etc. It is only available online and is just over £30 for a 15kg bag it is Challenge Salmon and Potato it's not full of rubbish has no cereals in it and the main ingredient is salmon. If you buy two bags delivery is free. My dog loves it and I even use it as treats when we go out as guess what "normal" treats just upset his tum!!" Also, because it's good quality we don't need to feed him as much so can work out quite economical.
Hope this is useful to someone x

Have you tried Dr John Gold? Recommended by the ISDS (international Sheepdog Society) and sells at £9.49 for a 15kg sack. They also do a Silver version at £8.49 for 15 kg. and Platinum for (I think) £10.49 Bradway Pets stocks the Gold and can get any of the others to order.

try wainwrights large breed from pets at home its on offer i think at the moment you will pay more for puppy food as the protein content is higher but with a large breed like your dog you need to feed a good quality food for the joints its a really good food and not as expensive as royal canin or hills but when you buy a dog food you need to look at the content ie ash, vitamins protein, meat content you will see with all these cheaper foods they are cereal based with hardly any meat content and can swell in the stomach they fill your dog with compressed air and they feel full,i personally would feed any giant breed on really cheap food because of bloat
