My husband used to go to Cyril's everyday for his dinner, a tomato dip, cup of tea and a tuppeny Park Drive, leaving just 3d to play the Pinball, with a bit of luck he'd win enough replays to last all his 1 hour lunch, which would leave Cyril fuming. After dinner when the cafe cleared Cyril would get his screwdriver and try to fix the machine to stop anyone getting so many replays.
His favourite drink at Goff's was Vimto, they used to make their own, they'd mix it in demi-johns which stood on the counter and sold it in really tiny glasses.

Goffs was the only place (I think) that you could buy 1 fag and 1 match!

He used to sell shots of Vimto and another drink red in colour like a rasperry thing

In summer he used to make ice lollies from the stuff as well

We used to go up the park and annoy the parkies by sinking the rowing boats

The fair used to be a great event
and sledging on camels hump in the winter

do you remember the massive draughts set next to the pavillion that you had to play using poles with hooks on the end? and sliding on the iced up boating lake in winter? (i remember going through the ice and ending up with pneumonia:mad: )

the licorice stick was called arrowroot and we got 2 for a ha penny. I loved the big draughs board but never had any money to play so had to settle on watching others. Did you pick blackberries in the woods and steal the wandering golf balls?

hi exhatter
i never sank any paddle boats(i'm a good lad i am:thumbsup: honest)anyhow i'm too young at 47 yrs:clap:

never did play draughts:(

when the woods were being cleared for the parkway,a bunch of us went to investigate a tractor when the workmen had gone home, well one clown got it started-about ten kids hanging off the thing,he ran it into a barbed wire fence and it pulled the wooden posts up one by one, panicking,we all jumped off and ran, christ only knows where it ended up:rolleyes:

another time we were in the woods,we found a bees nest in a hole in the ground, whilst peering down some clown (never did find out who!) dropped a rock down, out came the very angry bees and we all got stung (i copped two, back of head & thumb)

little snippets of memory keep popping back into my head after reading this thread

regards,john.

i remember the parkies in high hazels, they used to think they were the local police,:D if we had a transistor radio on they would appear and ask if we had a licence for it.

i remember walking through the tunnell below davy uniteds and coming out near the park, if i remember rightly there was a roller skating rink in the park, and the stone trees just below the cafe

Youre right Depoix, there was a roller rink with an iron rail around it, half way up the hill....forgot about that. Then there were the allotments up piggy lane. The smell is still in mi nose.
Many years later the gypsies came in and left the park a right ****hole, but that was nothing new. I liked the May day parade and the easter parade that always ended up in High Hazels.
Did you bring the butter wrapper and shine up the slide to make it go faster so you could fly off the end?

biggsy, I think John Ward was about 2 yrs younger than me, I knew his sister Gillian, I think his dad was in the building trade and I used to babysit his cousins, Joanne and Steven Ward that lived at the top of Nightingale St. Their mum was Barbara. I knew a lot of their relatives.

Yeah! Cyrils was on Main Road up a bit and opposite from the
Lyric! My old brother used to go in but used to kick my a*** if I followed him.
Remember Lakins the sweet shop? I can remember sweets coming off ration -- now that ages me.
Any one out there who went to Darnall Board? and got the stick for not getting the times table right in the Friday morning test.

High Hazels Park
wot a great place that used to be,
you could do everything there:
Sledging down camels hump
Blackberry picking over the back, next to the woods
play golf ( I couldnt)
Nik flowers
ride bikes - they were a few them who used to hang round the park!
get a fag and a saspirilla.
Have a fight or 2
the students used to come in the summer and run play schemes
they used to put ropes in trees to make great swings

What a great place it still is! I'm Chairman of the Friends Group at High Hazels. We've been formed 9 years, after getting fed up at seeing the park deteriorate. We have a full-time development team in the park, and they have brought about massive improvements, including 2 new childrens playgrounds, sensory garden, orienteering course and artificial cricket wicket. We are now finishing the refurbishment of the formal garden by the Senior Road entrance.
High Hazels House (the golf clubhouse) is shortly to be renovated as a community building.
If you live locally, why not join us,it's free! contact me on the link below.

A gang of us used to walk upto High Hazels Park in the summer, it seemded miles away, but in reality not that far from Shirland Lane.
We would always call into Goff's on our way home, a 1p drink and candy floss if we had enough money.
We would spand all day in there just playing about.
