View Full Version : Newbie in Sheffield (Hillsborough)!
sarabran 14-07-2009, 19:39 Hey you guys...we're moving to Hillsborough in a few weeks from sunny East Manchester (!) and want to know what it's like living in the area. I've got 2 kids who will be attending Hillsborough primary and we'll be living near the park. I really need to know about a good healthfood/organic shop that's nearby and generally anything else good/bad about the area.
I am possibly thinking about starting to go to the football too!!!!
I love this forum and it's where I found the house we will be moving into.
x
six45ive 14-07-2009, 19:57 Which road are you moving to (don't give the number of your house). Generally if it's to the west of the park then you should be fine. If it's on the eastern side then your closer to Penistone Road which is the main route into the city from north Sheffield. There's also still quite a bit of industry along Penistone Road although you'll be very close to SWFC's ground.
SYorksDeano 14-07-2009, 20:03 First of all welcome to Sheffield, or at least when you get here. If you are wanting to watch football, then the best place to go would be to watch Rotherham United at the Don Valley Stadium. At Hillsborough they "pretend" to play football :hihi:
As for Hillsborough as a whole, its not actually a bad area, and that is saying something who was dragged up in Bradford

You dont even have to change tram going to Don Valley from Hillsborough :D
Bradford is much better place than Le*ds :D
Hi Sara, welcome to Hillsborough. I've lived here (or very nearby) for over twenty years now. It's sound around here. Your best bet for a local organic/healthfood shop is a place called Beanies in Crookes, up the hill from here. It's a twenty minute walk or a short bus ride.
Best things?
Some great shops- best fishmonger in Sheffield (JH Mann), really good butchers (Pearson Brothers) and greengrocers (Eve's in the precint). Great countryside on your doorstep (Rivelin valley - a short walk away, Bradfield a picturesque bus ride).
You're also only ten minutes from the City Centre on the tram, which is really handy.
Worst things? Well friday nights around Hillsborough corner can be a bit crazy, with occasional outbreaks of idiocy, but there are some decent boozers nearby if you know where to look.
Can't really think of a deal else that's ropey.
There's a deal of community spirit around in places. Hope you like it; if you'd like someone to meet for a coffee or a beer or to show you the sights, give us a shout and I'd be happy to help out.
SheffieldPA 15-07-2009, 07:11 When I was last in Hillsborough, there was a health food shop on the main road, just up from the crossroads, stocking all the usual bagged stuff - nuts, pulses etc
fox20thc 15-07-2009, 07:18 A new health food shop is opening where harvesthyme was Halibut, signs in the window
Dark Moomin 15-07-2009, 07:32 oh that's good!
I quite liked Harvestthyme tho must confess I never used it enough really.
When I first came to Sheffield I lived in Hillsborough, and its a great place.
sheffield_uk 15-07-2009, 07:37 Welcome....
I used to live in levenshulme and stockport, way better here :)
Ms Macbeth 15-07-2009, 07:55 I've lived here for 4 years now, and really like it (most of the time). The park is lovely, and the gardeners really look after it. There's a play area for children, a walled garden, and at the bottom end a sports arena. The library/children's library are in the park too. Shops and public transport as already mentioned, and currently there's some work going on to try and make the whole area more green and pleasant!
The positives really outweigh the negatives!

Do you know when yet Fox? I noticed the sign t'other day, but was in a rush. Hope it's soon!
By the way, I've still got a load of iris bulbs for you. Must remember to get them to you.
nickmunich 15-07-2009, 12:02 Hillsborough Park should be really nice, but its been taken over by dozens of dogs running off their leads, with owners doing nothing about it.
g-whizzer 15-07-2009, 13:48 Welcome to Sheffield!
WAY nicer than Manchester btw...;)
bigheffa21 15-07-2009, 13:50 oh god! why send them to hillsborough school? you know how many problems they ahve had in t he past? it is not a good school! you have been warned, I went there too when I was a child, golly gosh!

watch out Sara, that how Jack the Ripper got started.
I live in Hillsborough myself (a road off Bradfield Road) & its okay most of the time, but it can be pretty problematic tbh. Parking is the main problem - mainly due to shoppers/football fans etc..., closely followed by anti social behaviour Fri, Sat nights as people exit the local pubs. Anti social behaviour doesn't happen all the time, but I always put my wing mirrors in just to be on the safe side, as there was a repeated pattern of wing mirrors being knocked off some years ago.
hi lived in and around hillsborough all my life and love it. i wouldn't move anywhere else (if i had the choice) Fri and sat night is a bit lively so i wouldn't go into hillsborough for a night out on those days. theres loads of brill country side right on your door step just a 10 min walk away
shopping for food, there is a fantastic farm shop on rivelin valley road you can't get better than that, and their prices are pretty good too, also the fish mongers in hillsborough is good too.
oh god! why send them to hillsborough school? you know how many problems they ahve had in t he past? it is not a good school! you have been warned, I went there too when I was a child, golly gosh!
Here are some qoutes from the latest Ofsted report which was earlier this year -
'The level of pastoral support given to pupils is exemplary.'
'This is a school where clearly every child does matter. Under the visionary leadership of the headteacher, everyone subscribes to the very caring ethos of the school. Development plans ensure that the school has identified the right areas for improvement and has strategies in place to address them.'
There's loads more positive stuff, but you can look for yourself.
Hillsborough Park should be really nice, but its been taken over by dozens of dogs running off their leads, with owners doing nothing about it.
Have been using park with my 3 kids for the last 8 years and can't say i have had any problems with dogs or their owners. Anyway, welcome to sheffield, totally agree with most of the posts on here, hillsborough is a great place to live, been here for 14 years now and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Agree with the post about hillsborough school, my 3 girls attend marlcliffe nearby, much better school.

Hillsborough is lovely, but Im afraid a lot of shops have closed down. Others seem to be gradually opening up, but its a slow process.:)
bigheffa21 15-07-2009, 21:49 Hillsborough school - has kids that are too old to be in school and who live in a bed and breakfast and are from an african country, the headteacher doesnt know what he is doing, you take a look at all the kids you see from down hillsborough with hillsbrough school uniforms on, they run riot and their parents look like they belong at the manor, hillsborough has a large intake from winn gardens!! look at the kids there!
full of desirables! NOT, good luck, hope you send your kids to schools with protective gear from the kids who carry knives, yes knives have been confiscated from hillsborough middle school!, oh and the 11 yr old boy that made his 13 yr old gf pregnant, all from hillsborough, nice school eh?
Welcome....
I used to live in levenshulme and stockport, way better here :)
Aye I also grew up in stockport, just moved up to Hillsborough. Its a much nicer place, but then so is Baghdad.

My bold.
Was the rest of the school there at the conception then? How does a 13 year old girl getting pregnant become the school's fault?

Racist? Dunno maybe.
Snob? 100% yes.
my lad finishes at hillsboro tomorro. I for one am sad as the school is brilliant. Fantastic teachers, superb headteacher,he's local and passionate. Every school has kids that are a pain but if your kids are in the right mindset it doesn't matter which school they go to and they'll end up with 5's in their sats like my son did. Dont listen to that idiot a few posts back. By the way i dont live on winn gardens and neither do the majority of kids that go there. Your kids will love it.

Really nice welcome that!!!
I would like to say welcome to Sheffield, Hillsborough is a great place full of friendly people as I'm sure you'll discover.
Ignore bigheffa21...............TROLL:loopy:
I'm sure, bigheffa21, that people could make comments about the area you live in. And find quite a few things that are wrong with it!!
The OP was just trying to make some friends and introduce herself.
You should be ashamed of yourself
You could always send your kids to private schools but i went to king edwards and the girls from the girls high were dirty dirty little minxs! They were also broken in at young ages. So it doesn't really matter which school you go to. Kids have sex, end of! How many schools have had their end of year play in a proper theatre instead of the school hall? Oh yeah, hillsboro did.

Just because your education clearley wasn't all that good from Hillsborough, does not mean its the same for evey pupil/student that attends. To me it just looks like you have a grudge over this school.
hennypenny 16-07-2009, 09:03 If Hillsborough school is not good for you, you might be interested to know that there is a thriving home ed group in Sheffield, with some of us based in Hillsborough :P
I am really pleased to hear there is going to be a new health food shop as we miss the old one. I hope they sell spelt flour bread for me as it is a pain having to go to Zeds or Beanies.

I used to use the former Harvestyme, and was sorry to see it close. So glad another Health food shop is opening up.

I notice you don't rule out "factual"
Hillsborough is a bustling vibrant metropolis. you'll love it. honestly.
get yourself up to the mobility centre by morrisons for a great morning and buy some discount clothes from that designer boutique next door. then go wild by entering morrisons itself and enjoying the wonderful cafe amongst hundreds of pensioners eating liver and onions. stop off at the wonderful champs bar or whatever its called for a pint of stones, then head over to cash convertors before capping it all off by visiting the delightful shopping centre and raiding the ailses at home bargains.

Probably cos most of it isnt! I mean whats this bit about kids being too old, african and living in B&B's? If they're on about the one I'm thinking of then he isnt too old and doesn't live in a B&B and is probably one of the nicest kids you could ever come across.
Bigheffa is a prat and needs to plug up their backside to stop the drivel that pours out of it.

Well the new barrack tavern is a decent pub as is the Queens Ground and Park Hotel.A few minutes on the tram takes you to the Hillsborough Hotel and Kelham island for a good selection of quality beer.

New Barrack Tavern, Hillsborough Hotel are both a short walk away.
The Rawson is right there and not without it's charms.

Where abouts in east Manchester are you moving from and what was it like there.... just wondered out of curiosity as i've heard parts of it are quite poor and rough (Denton & Openshaw).
Under no circumstances go to watch the football at Hillsborough apart from the 1 occasion each year that Sheffield United come to play :) You can get the 97 from somewhere in Hillsborough (I think) and that will drop you off on London Road which is very close to Bramall Lane, where the only proper football team in Sheffield play:)
Hillsborough has a good reputation in Sheffield and is considered one of the better areas of north Sheffield. You will probably read a lot about people slagging north Sheffield as a whole but Hillsborough is north-west Sheffield and generally all north-west Sheffield is fairly nice (discounting Upperthorpe, Winn Gardens and some of the flats in Stannington). It's north-east Sheffield that people have in mind when they slag off north Sheffield.
I am looking to buy a house/flat in the near future and Hillsborough is one of the areas I am looking at. Did you buy your house and if you did buy did you get a good discount from peak prices? I'm just looking for a general guide - don't put exactly where you bought?

oh yes, i am a prat! mmmmmmmmm, check out the facts I mentioned, I have a lot of connections with it, and would hope that any parent wanting the best for their kids, and who have some education themselves, will send them to a different school! unless you come from the winn gardens!! you know that place smells of weed as soon as you get up middlewood rd -FACT!!!

Did you used to work at Woolworths, in Hillsborough.? Just a thought.:)
bigheffa21 18-07-2009, 21:43 yes as you will have read from one of my previous posts!
Hillsborough is a great place to live. Everything on your doorstep, shops, parks, Morrisons and public transport. Rivelin is just up the road and the road back to Manchester when you want to visit Mom! There is a good community spirit in Hillsborough but on the bad side depending where in Hillsborough you live parking can be a problem. Near Hillsborough corner and the college can get a bit cramped with the shoppers and students.
roobster 11-08-2009, 19:13 hillsborough's alright apart from the shops are a bit crap, and the pubs are a lot crap. also you get nobheads two doors down from my house staying outside all night (till 6 in the morning!) laughing and talking loudly... 2 nights in a row! ggrrr.
