View Full Version : Accident on Ecclesall Road 01/12/03
sheffieldfox 01-12-2003, 14:16 Just heard about it on look north, apparently the road is closed off between hunters bar and summerfield st. I think it might have just been opened though because ive just walked a bit down that road to the local shop and there was no sign of accidents or anything. So it has probably been cleared up.
chalicefc3 02-12-2003, 03:18 motorcyclist dead, end of. i feel for the family but know nothing of the incident.
ban mobiles? ban motorbikes morelike. i dont want to see anyone die.
Classic Rock 02-12-2003, 09:06 Errr, no. Don't ban motorbikes. They are not dangerous. In the same breath you could say ban pushbikes or ban scooters. It's just down to observation of other road users. Maybe ban cars so everyone can be on a motorbike......different point of view there...

You cannot just make a blanket statement that bikes should be banned, just because a bike was involved and the biker was killed, it does not mean the accident is automatically his fault. Do you honestly think that if bikes were banned no-one else would die on the roads? What about all the car crashes, pedestrian accidents etc that result in deaths? Does that mean cars should be banned too, and pedestrians shouldn't be allowed to cross roads?
My mother in law saw the accident as she went past on the bus and a car actually ran into the back of the bike, pushing it into the path of oncoming traffic, the biker was thrown off and ended up under an oncoming car. So it seems the accident was not the biker's fault. My hubby has a bike and I ride pillion, he is a very careful biker but riding with him has made me realise that car/van/bus drivers and even pedestrians take silly risks that could easily cause serious accidents. This has made me a much more careful and considerate car driver, and I always make a point of looking out for bikes and motorbikes - perhaps if more drivers did so, accidents like this would not happen.
Bleedin' hell, poor biker :(
Hope the fool that shunted the bike gets taken to the cleaners - this nearly happened to me once, the car screeching to a halt right behind my bike

Don't ban them maybe, but you can't say they're not dangerous. They're much more dangerous than cars, and some of the speeds that their owners ride at beggars belief. They also assume the right to 'creating their own lane' in traffic jams, flying past queues of cars at lightening speeds and then wondering why sometimes a car might not see them. Also, even if a motorbike owner rides really carefully, if they were to be involved in an accident of any kind, they'd have a much better chance of surviving if they were in a car instead. I know which I think is the safer mode of transport.

If your mother-in-law did see the accident the police are looking for witnesses according to an article in tonight's Star. She should ring on 0114 220 2970.

you've omitted banning coaches going abroad then. oh and trains (potters bar, hatfield etc..), planes..
Boats seem safe so perhaps we could turn Sheffield into Venice with more waterways?
Greenback 12-12-2003, 08:26 Motorbikes aren't as dangerous to other road users as cars are. Full stop.
I find that generally speaking bikers have much better road awareness than those who weave in and out of lanes in their 4x4s without so much as a glance in their mirrors (which they presumably think are there just for decoration).
Bikers can't afford to act like idiots, as they don't have any side impact bars or airbags. Sometimes I think that driving standards would improve if every car came equipped with a big metal spike protruding from the steering wheel.

That is so, so true!:headbang:

I'm sure I read that in the Radio Times, an article by Polly Toynbee a few years ago.
Very true though. Cars are sold on merit that they are safer and safer for drivers, with so much protection and safety measures in case of accident. But this may make people less careful when driving. And if it's a person you hit, the outside of a car is still relatively hard to hit...
I think I'd be worse off if I hit someone in my 2CV... doesn't need a spike to keep you engaged!

Anyone else agree that anyone who wants to drive one of these should have to take extra training?
Poor person.
I do find road users to be generally very unobservant :(
I've just got a scooter - 100cc so not too bad and all the safety gear.... and you know what? I'm genuinely frightened to use it.
Hell I walk with it through the underpass near where I live to avoid driving round the safeway roundabout!
