View Full Version : Studio 9 compressing film
Hi,
Thanks to the information you gave me the other day I am now the happy owner of a firewire cable, fully installed. I have now uploaded a piece of film I want to put on a webiste, it;s about 40 seconds in length. I have bveen in touch with my host and they say that I have to put a film under 1mg onto the site, nothing more, so how do I find out the size of my 40 second film and also how do I go about copndensing it so I can upload to a website.
Thanks in anticipation.
Jane.
melthebell 16-07-2005, 16:24 right clicking on the file and selecting properties will tell you
also with xp just hovering the mouse pointer on it will bring up a tool tip that tells you?
you may need some software to re encode / compress it to mpg, avi, wmv to make it smaller
Hi Mel,
I have right clicked and there isn;t the 'properties' section like normal, however I have just managed to locate the MB and it says 1.3mb.
With studio 9 I have said I would like to make a windows media player, I have options to make an avi or mpeg, I don't have a clue what this means either. Whic would be the smaller size to do the film in? And do I really need to buy software :-((
Thanks,
jane.
An avi file format is likely to be considerably smaller than mpeg, but it also helps to carefully consider a choice of codec - the format in which an avi is compressed. For example, you may have heard of "divx" or "xvid" formats. These require people to install a codec to create or play them, but these codecs are very common these days - and free!
WMV files are also good compression so should give a decent file size, but you may need to alter the resolution to keep it under 1MB. If it's captured via firewire, is it full tv/camcorder res? That will create some fairly big files - try halving the size.
I always use Virtualdub to recompress avi files if I need to change their size, but it might be a slightly intimidating program to start using if you're not used to video work!
Lastly, you have pretty rubbish webhosting if they won't let you upload anything over a megabyte! :) There are plenty of free places to put files if you just want to distribute that movie clip rather than a whole website...
To create a wmf in Studio 9 you need to use the Stream option in Make Video.
Select the quality you require. Lower quaility equlas smaller file size. Trial and error is the best way.

yousharieit
www.megaupload.com
rapidshare
allow you to share files without needing webspace or sending emails, you just upload and give people the link so they can download it
they allow you to upload at least 30mb, some allow even more
Hi,
mell - I have looked on the sites you mention and although it looks fab I don;t know who will be looking on the website so can't put a recipient email into the box, I wan't anyone to be able to view the short film.
Rich951, yes it is straight from the camcorder onto studio 9. Is it possible then to halve the size on the studio 9 software? Is there anything I can download free :-)
The 2 places mel gave me look very good but It wouldn;t work I don't think as I can't put a recipients email in with me wanting it to be available to all.
This is all new to me and I don;t have a clue where to go next!
Thanks,
jane.
It's all in the Studio manual to be honest. Just try what I suggested above. The size of the picture is governed by the quality selected too.

Hi,
Mel, just tried to use megaupload and it uploaded the whole page of studio 9 which seems odd. All we need to know bascially how do we get it from studio 9 onto our pc to put onto the website or the megaupload page, we can't work it out.

hmmmmm you need the video file first.......never used studio 9.....that takes the vid off the cam corder and creates a file on your puter right?
then you can use virtual dub to make it smaller
then you can upload to megaupload to share with all and sundry :)
What is your system running? If it's XP, then Windows Movie Maker is a dead simple way to capture and do a very basic edit. It will save a DV format avi file, which is basically very high quality but large file size. I'd then use virtualdub to resize it and choose a different compression format, and play around with settings until you get a suitable file size.
Failing that, PM me for an email address and send over the file which is too big, and I'll resize it for you and write a tutorial run-through of exactly what I clicked along the way :)
alchresearch 16-07-2005, 19:48 You could use a 30 day trial of Nero Vision Express, which is better than Windows Movie Maker.
Then go to Microsoft and download their free Windows Media Encoder. It's a utility that converts video files to application specific sizes and quality.
Thanks guys YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! done it!!
Happy Bunnies!!
