View Full Version : What Internet Speed Are You Running?

Just wanted to see what kind of connections people are using really. Like the balance nowadays between broadband and dialup.

Post any opinions or reasons, anything extra really

I'm currently running NTL 2Mb, no problems and the speed is pretty good. Hardly any delay on pages loading and when playing large online games, it always delivers lag free gaming. Yet to try gaming and surfing but am sure it hould handle it, albeit slower.

512k Wanadoo broadband here.. If only BT would be kind enough to move the local exchange closer to Stannington than Wadsley chuffing Bridge.. Then we'd be able to get 1Mb or above.. Good job I've pretty much decided to switch to Plusnet once my 12 month contract with Wanadoo runs out in late October/early November.

I think Ofcom defined it as such.

Thanks, I seem to have missed that announcement. I remember the run up to the argument about sub 512k and it's non-broadbandness but I never actually heard what happened.

I moved up from 56k to broadband just a few weeks ago and I'm happy with my 1mb connection from Metronet.

Most sites I visit load a lot faster but this forum is one of the sites I notice doesn't seem much quicker at all than it did using dial-up.

They were once, still not too bad by all accounts though, but most are about the same in the top few ISP's.

Most of my problems are with BT so it doesn't really matter which ISP I go with, it won't be any better than it is.

1M here.

Could be wrong but a poll on an online forum may well be slanted towards broadband and not represent genuine proportions?

512k with eclipse internet. top notch service and availability, and the option to 'flex' up to 2mb/s if required. In most cases that's just not required though, as I rarely download a lot, and when I do it's usually a ~700Mb linux distro, which takes time at 2Mb/s.

Speed when browsing is often limited by the server you request the page from, and the speed at which your browser renders the page.

At work we have 1mb Plusnet and it used to be excellent, but in the last 2 years, we have had occasional problems with it going off for most of a day.

At home I have Blueyonder 1mb, and it is rock solid have never had a problem with it over 3 years..

Might it be the OP's hardware, though?

We've got 2MB plusnet and the d/l speeds are fine. Only problem we've had in the last few months was when BT borked something and it threw loads of ADSL users off for hours. :(

I hope so because i didn't have a back-up plan :?
At this moment in time all the broadband providers are looking dodgy.

Don't really know, its works connection, very fast though. Faster than any broadband i've ever seen. Especially on Sundays.

I use LCDSL from lchost.co.uk in a bonded configuration, i have never had a problem, plus the owner is a drinking buddy, and I do work for him so i get it much cheaper. But some of the small companies who offer no frills DSL are often a lot better then the big companies.

A no frills service... Now that's something i would be interested in :heyhey:
Why do i have to pay for AOHELL's silly home page with it's fashion, weather, news, views, reviews etc etc.
I never even open the AOHELL browser any more. I only open Firefox or Opera, so why do have to pay for all the 'bells & whistles' :?
