Has anyone visited the re-opened Portofino? Myself and my wife enjoyed going before it closed down and became the Bay Tree. I wondered if anyone has been recently and if it is still as good as it was?

View Full Version : Re-opening of Portofino (Chesterfield road) richo99 13-07-2009, 10:58 Has anyone visited the re-opened Portofino? Myself and my wife enjoyed going before it closed down and became the Bay Tree. I wondered if anyone has been recently and if it is still as good as it was? swordfish1 16-07-2009, 19:11 It's the same owners as before and the same friendly front of house staff. We went last week. It's as good, if not better, than it was before. Lets hope it gets enough custom to stay open this time, as I missed a decent italian within walking distance. Oh, and their tomato garlic bread was always second to none IMO. KATIEB_23 21-07-2009, 14:21 It's the same owners as before and the same friendly front of house staff. We went last week. Oh, and their tomato garlic bread was always second to none IMO.I was just saying exactly the sam to OH last night! Might pop along for my Bday on Thursday. Do you know if they do 'bring your own wine' on week nights any more? KATIEB_23 21-07-2009, 14:33 Just phoned up myself... (0114 2555655) - Yes, you can bring your own wine for £2 corkage fee - They will be up & running doing deliveries like they used to in a couple of weeks. 8) The Idler 21-07-2009, 15:18 Just phoned up myself... Been looking for somewhere that will do that for a while. KATIEB_23 21-07-2009, 15:47 Cool - will they deliver Pizza + Nice Salad do you know? Been looking for somewhere that will do that for a while.I'll check what their plan is when I go for dinner on Thursday, but if it's anything like before - then YES :) They had everything on the restaurant menu available to order... (even the steak dishes etc) and their pizzas were THE BEST! Nice thin authentic italian bases, & really generous with the toppings. Mmmm.... I was SO upset when they shut down! missymarsbar 21-07-2009, 16:10 We went there on Sunday - still just as good! Menu is the same as before. We missed it when it closed. Portofino do the best pizza in Sheff in my opinion. swordfish1 21-07-2009, 20:43 I had squid starter and fillet steak for main when I went. Both top notch. Forgot they used to do BYO wine. Think another visit soon is likely. richo99 31-07-2009, 10:29 Visited last night and it was excellent. Menu is similar to what it was before but not exactly the same. You can BYO for £2 corkage fee. I had Tiger Prawns starter and the Curry linguine for main which was excellent. My wife had Aubergine and Pizza which was very nice also. Extras like Garlic bread was not on the menu but we ordered one with our main courses which was excellent. Thoroughly recommended and we will be going back again. swordfish1 31-07-2009, 19:04 They took the tomato garlic bread off the menu before they closed the first time, but would always do it to order. Never understood why, as it's quite simply the best garlic bread I've ever had. I'm hungry now missymarsbar 31-07-2009, 19:19 Yes they do the garlic bread with tomato mmmmm! They also do garlic bread with tomato, cheese and chilli - even better. I was once in Felicini's on Ecclesall Road and asked for a tomato garlic bread with cheese and was told I couldn't have it, as that was a margarita pizza - a more expensive version of garlic bread with tomato and cheese! We went again to Portofino the other night and as ever, it's still the best pizza in Sheff....and before you ask, I don't work there! spiker 02-09-2009, 18:46 That number is actually: (0114) 255 5655. See: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=504327:hihi: Well spotted - I was scrolling up, thinking "which numpty put the space in the wrong place?" and it was ME! spiker 02-09-2009, 19:45 BUSTED!!! :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :D :D :D :D Moosey 02-09-2009, 19:48 Has this place got a website at all? Sounds interesting and isn't too far. KATIEB_23 02-09-2009, 19:52 I don't think so... but I'll ask them, as we've just decided to go there again tomorrow :) Moosey 02-09-2009, 19:56 Nice one - thank you (from a fellow Heeley-er!) KATIEB_23 03-09-2009, 14:59 Boo :( I had to cancel as we've got too much to do tonight :( I just asked and they don't have a website though. It's really nice having such a good restaurant within walking distance :) we can't afford to go out for many restaurant meals, but whenever we can we would rather support a local, good quality, really friendly business than go to some chain in the city centre ;) I would be very upset if they closed down again. missymarsbar 03-09-2009, 18:16 Going tonight - yippppppeeeeeeee! KATIEB_23 03-09-2009, 21:43 Going tonight - yippppppeeeeeeee!Hmph. Rub it in, why don't you. I have literally only just finished all my chores for the night :( had some tagliatelle with random leftover bits & bobs in the fridge earlier. Need a big glass of wine to make up for what I missed out on now... Hope you had a nice evening anyway x missymarsbar 03-09-2009, 23:15 Sorry KatieB - didn't mean to rub it in. You'll have to treat yourself now you've done all your chores. I'd love to say that it was rubbish and that your tagliatelle with random leftover bits and bobs was better....but I'd be telling fibs. It was gorge! Carborundum 03-09-2009, 23:23 I have just finished my chores now - I went there once when it was open the first time - me and my boyfriend must try it out then in the next few weeks - can anyone recommend a good pub in the area to try before or after the meal? KATIEB_23 04-09-2009, 08:12 Sorry KatieB - didn't mean to rub it in. You'll have to treat yourself now you've done all your chores. I'd love to say that it was rubbish and that your tagliatelle with random leftover bits and bobs was better....but I'd be telling fibs. It was gorge!:hihi: :hihi: :hihi: As for good pubs nearby - The Sheaf View is very close. swordfish1 26-09-2009, 05:47 Wish they'd not reopened, it's costing me a fortune. Their BYO wine is on every day except Saturday now (don't think you were able to take your own wine on a Friday previously). The tomato garlic bread is as good as ever. My OH had the chocolate terrine as a dessert and said it's the best dessert she's had in a restaurant for years (she's a chocolate freak). Pity they don't have a website, but at least it looks like they're getting a decent amount of custom. We need good restaurants to stay open. KATIEB_23 28-09-2009, 14:48 Their BYO wine is on every day except Saturday now (don't think you were able to take your own wine on a Friday previously). We keep forgetting to BYO! Do they charge corkage? Can you BYO champagne too? missymarsbar 28-09-2009, 22:42 Yes, you can buy champagne. I think they charge £2.50 corkage for BYO. We feel a bit guilty taking our own booze, as it's good value as it is. Been every week since it re-opened....splendido! Prob see you down there at some point KatieB! swordfish1 29-09-2009, 15:21 Corkage is £2 (that's the price for sparkling or still wines, so yes to champagne).I like BYO because I have my favourites and I'd rather take a bottle that's virtually guaranteed to be good, than risk spending a lot on something that has a chance of being mediocre. |
