View Full Version : Lee Hughes to Wednesday?
Stockers 12-07-2009, 18:06 http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/88785/Hughes-in-talks-over-future-/
According to the Star it's a possibility, what would the Wednesday fans reaction to this move be?
NERVY-OWL 12-07-2009, 18:35 hmm, not so sure about this one. he used to be a pretty decent striker, not really seen too much of him though in recent seasons. if he isnt on too higher a wage then maybe its worth having him in the squad but it does seem like a risky signing
CorkerSWFC 12-07-2009, 18:53 We were linked with him last season and i was all for it, but now im not so sure.
His fitness must be the major worry.
I saw him at Butlins last summer with his family, top fella he's sociable and all that.
Can't see it, what with Wednesday trying to establish a 'new' brand and all. Signing someone who's been in prison, maybe isn't the best thing - I know he's served his time and apologised, but it probably isn't good for us as a club as people don't forget, however many times a person truly apologises.
Robbie Loving 12-07-2009, 19:54 Risky signing if you ask me,
He was once a good striker in this league, and he has done well since coming out of prison, but the bad PR would be a risk that Strafford won't allow.

Id like us to get a "first choice striker" in, i feel at the moment if we keep what we have that were covered everywhere else apart from being slightly thin on the wings.
We have signed 4 player's in a way because Michael Gray hasn't been here long and is brilliant in my eyes.
Then we got hold of Tommy Miller who i didn't realise is only 29, Darren Purse who brings much needed experiance into the centre of defence, and Darren Potter who i think is a very very good talent.

would be a great move -no problems at all
MrMuscle 12-07-2009, 20:14 yes this is true. ive never seen him play but looking at his record I don't think he is that bad. But if we do sign him then we still need another striker.

A 33 year old Islamic ex-convict who has only played three games at this level since 2005... Yeah, no problem! :hihi:
Seriously, It could go either way. He obviously has an eye for goal, but he's getting on a bit and his only goal at Championship level in the last 5 years came when he was brought on in the 89th minute. A risk, but would add some depth to the squad.
A bit of a risk maybe too much of one.
I think we should have a look at him and see what he could bring to Wednesday although Wiki says: he did score 25 goals for Oldham in 55 appearances between 2007 and 2009.

Billy Sharp scored 53 in 82 games at that level... We all know how that worked out! :hihi:

Well at least he's on a free and he's shopping round for a club.

If that's the case then get him in, id love to be able to pull him up in the players entrance and see if he recognised us from his holiday in Skegness lol.
ReginaldD 12-07-2009, 23:30 As far as I'm concerned he should still be in prison and will not attend matches at Hillsborough if Lee Hughes is on the Hillsborough payrol.
Seeing the abuse Nathan Dyer got from some sections of the crowd at the Lane last season (playing FOR us) after his alleged handbag stealing escapades, I'd dread to think the abuse Hughes would get from some at Hillsborough after his past!

its a difficult one ,a good player who knows where the goal is ,but it could be a PR disaster .
but ,id still definatly have him
NEKRO138 13-07-2009, 08:11 It'd be one or two season at the most, he's not the youngest any more. But let's face it, if it wasn't for his stretch in prison and all that goes with it, he would have been playing at this level, if not higher.
To be honest i wouldn't have that man anywhere near my club if i could help it.
Ousetunes 13-07-2009, 09:06 Get him signed along with Joey Barton and all you'll be missing is Ken Bates.
Le*ds would no longer be the most hated club in the world...,
al_partridge 13-07-2009, 09:14 Lee Hughes would be a waste of space.
That said, fortunately it's only "according to the Daily Star", which makes it about as reliable a source as "according to football rumours.com", or "according to Aldridge Prior out of Viz"
Ousetunes 13-07-2009, 10:36 Whilst I don't disagree with what you're saying matt1889, I think you ought to tread carefully on what is a public forum.
I certainly wouldn't post something like that!
matt- i had to delete your post as i agree with ousetunes- don't want you getting into trouble-ok mate?
Plain Talker 13-07-2009, 11:05 *disgusted*
Wouldn't give 'it' house room!
GordonBennet 13-07-2009, 11:13 He did the crime, he's done the time and like any ex offender he deserves the chance to rebuild his life. Hes probably a bit too old and unfit for Championship football but if he's available on a free Wednesday could do a lot worse.
Jazzybmzoo 13-07-2009, 11:16 Think that everyone deserves a second chance but from a footballing perspective, definitely not interested.
No matter how much crowing everyone does he is very remorseful for what he has done and importantly paid the price. (If this is enough however, is for another debate)
OK, he did a very wrong/bad thing and he has met the victim’s family and apologised to their faces which, in my book takes allot of guts.
It’s now between him and his conscience.

It does take guts to do what he did and it will/should be always in the back of his mind when contemplating something rash as we all do on occasions.
On a footballing front isn't this going in a similar way to Jeffers. Two players slightly beyond their sellby date?
I dont think he is nowhere near good enough for the champ, i think Laws will leave well alone.

(don't know whats happend here re: the quotes)
Yep, I think your right, I think Brian could have a look at him for nowt though.
I believe he was on 1.8k per week at Oldham more than 10k less than Jeffers.
freyasdad 13-07-2009, 14:08 Doesn't cost anything to look totally right.
Do you think could Laws be spending his time more wisely?
Maybe its the rose tinted glasses but for me it doesn't fit in with a club that wants to keep progressing.
matt1889 13-07-2009, 14:38 Firstly point taken Scott mate and thank you Ousetunes, I understand you were both acting on my behalf and thank you for that it's appreciated, I didn't think I was harming anything by my comments due to the fact that the deed had allready been done and the verdict casted by a jury therefore my comments are fact based and not slanderous but either way fair enough...
Back On Topic from me.....
I don't think he has anything to offer wednesday, your strikers apart from Jeffers who I deem a bit of a donkey in front of goal are in fact half decent and Hughes won't threaten these two in my opinion, when I heard the rumours about the Everton lad I must admit it gave me the jitters as he could do a job for you however I wouldn't be too scared about having Hughes line up against us!

If it was a choice between Anichebe and Hughes, there's no contest obviously. I just hope Anichebe doesn't pop up in this Naughton to Everton deal should it go through. I think he'd do great in this league.

Anichebe would be a great signing for any championship club. Surely his ages would be too high for a club like Wednesday?

id love him at Hillsbro ,but your right ,his wages will be out of our reach

I don’t think the Brian would be doing his job if he didn't look at players who have the potential to make a difference.
Unfortunately because of the financial situation we find ourselves in we have to look in the bargain basement from time to time.

Yeah, I'm talking theoretically here.
Paul2412 14-07-2009, 13:46 His fitness lets him down.
Was never the same player after the hit and run incident. Although we shouldn't hold that against him now (served his time...) I just don't think he's the type of player we need.

You strategy is aimed at making Wednesday a more family orientated club, trying to bring the fans back on side. He is certainly not the type of player who would portray this image.

True, but he admitted his mistake and has tried his best to put it behind him.
If he was still a goal machine then I'd say give him a chance, everyone makes mistakes. The truth though is that he is nothing like the player he was, and on that basis I wouldn't want him.
