View Full Version : Predict the average attendances for next season
Titanic99 09-07-2009, 19:28 There’s been a bit of discussion about the ticketing policies of both clubs next season and most people will be familiar with what prices will be.
So how will these translate into numbers through the gate, who is the best predictor of what the final average gates will be next season?
With the objective of trying to be impartial I’ll try and sum up the facts as we know them:
United
Last season around 26000 in a promotion chasing season, this I believe included 20000 season ticket holders and 1000 visiting fans.
This year around 19,000 season tickets sold new offers on 16-18 year olds and the usual sprinkling of cheap games.
On the playing front, probably marginally weaker than last season due to the loss of that chap who went to Stoke.
Wednesday
Last season around 21,000 in an average season, this figure included a number of cheap and free tickets in the second half of the season and around 11000 Season Tickets.
This year around 13000 Season Tickets sold, marginally cheaper prices and cheap offers to Military Personnel.
On the playing front to date probably a bit stronger than last season so an outside chance of a play-off push.
So these are the facts as I see it, so over the course of the season what will the averages be:
I’ll go for 25,500 United and 20,000 Wednesday.
For United I believe they’ve already captured a lot of their support via their Season Ticket offers and I don’t see them improving on last years.
For Wednesday I see them having more potential to improve their figure but a bad start could be disastrous.
There you go a fair and unbiased opinion, what do others think?
I think the blades will be somewhere between 24-26k (depending on if it's a promotion, relegation or just dull season), and the Owls 21-23k (assuming there's no mid-season freebies like last year). If the Owls are challenging from the start of the season though, theirs could easily be pushed upto around 25k.
Of course, a change of manager or Chairman could significantly affect this (negatively for the Owls if Laws went, probably positively if Blackwell did!).
BLADES-EELA 09-07-2009, 21:37 there we go another dig at prices, just hurry up and sink u *******
CorkerSWFC 09-07-2009, 21:42 Yep totally boring, i know i'll be at most away matches, that's the place where the best buzz is at anyway.
Playing at home aint all it's cracked up to be, what with team's playing negative tactics and sitting on 1-0s and what have ya.
There's nowt better than travelling 300 miles and being one of only a few who win in a ground full of 20.000 people
Wednesday's will be up. I think we'll be around the 24k mark. We'll get near sell-outs against United, Barnsley and Newcastle. We'll also draw big crowds against Derby, Forest and Donny.
SteveBlade 09-07-2009, 22:43 No one will turn up at Hillsborough, the average attendance will be 0.
Blades average attendance will be 50,000.
Paul Blade 10-07-2009, 01:38 No one will turn up at Hillsborough, the average attendance will be 0.

Especially for a Tuesday night game live on sky :hihi::hihi:

I think uniteds is easy to predict as you have solid regular figures, whereas wednesdays is more likely to fluctuate depending on how they are doing.
A good start and they'll go up, a bad start and we could be in trouble.

note the comment about 1,000 visitors to the lane. but nothing about 6,000 blades at the sty and room for 6,000 away fans :hihi::hihi:
sussed it pal.. the bully was a blade season tkt holder was'nt he.

The Owls' average figures can be boosted this season with a few handily placed big games that could draw much higher than usual gates - the opener against Barnsley, Boxing Day against the Geordies, and the very late in the season Sheffield derby... especially if none are shown live on tv.
As you'll already know, the Lane derby is now on Sky on a Friday, and the Newcastle game moved to a Monday also for Sky - so some people who may have got a matchday ticket on the Saturday before, may just opt for watching it at home/in the pub on Sky with a few beers, especially with money tight.

and there at home last game again. but hey why post all the facts eh. better to pick those that suit his pathetic ramblings.
i think united will be arund 26k again- with the visits from the relegated clubs offsetting the effects of the recession which will stop some people from attending.
Wednesday- around 21k i think, until something major happens there i think the fans will continue to be frustrated with the lack of progress off the pitch.
NEKRO138 10-07-2009, 08:32 What a thrilling discussion to have. I predict around 400,000 per game for each club. And three horses and a stoat also attending the derbies.

getting ready for the comments about empty seats again
FFS can't they leave the big games alone on a Saturday so people can see them live

How much of the near sellouts will be free tickets
According to benny you are only giving the away fans the 'cheese slice' and filling the rest of that end with free tickets:huh::huh:
His words not mine

I've heard only 500 free season tickets have been taken out of the near 13k we've sold. Newcastle will get the whole of the lep including the corner. United will also, unless we could sell out the lep, then you would only have the corner. But realistically, I think you'll get the whole end.

i wasn't having a dig about the free tickets Not season tickets but give away tickets and agree with what you said .
IMO it would be financial suicide to only give big games a few tickets to the away fans and 'fill' the end with free give away tickets
If you can fill the remaining seats with paying fans as we do then yes give the away fans a reduced amount but to do as he suggests is nothing but gross stupidity

lee strafford says more than 1,000
"I am aware that many people are finding it difficult in the current economic climate and that's why we have tried to find as many good value for money season ticket options as possible. I am also proud that we have been able to give away more than 1,000 season tickets to under-8s and over-80s this year – an investment in the future and a reward to our longest-serving supporters.
scoobydotcom 10-07-2009, 09:57 doea anyone really care who has bigger crowds? i no i'd much prefer promotion!!!

23,000 Wednesday have sold or given away more season tickets than last season
So far that is......see the logic........probably not eh

Name one team in the Championship who can keep hold of top class players? Not even Newcastle and Boro will be able to do it if a Premier side comes in for players.
Even if we had managed to gain promotion last season I still think we would have had trouble keeping hold of Naughton.

Blackwell is quoted here as saying if you had gone up this would not have happened . quote "if we had got into the premier league ,there is no way klye would be going "

Thats my point exactley, so in simple terms neither United or Wednesday will ever be able to compete at a top class level till serious money is pumped into either.

Easy to say when you didn't get there, but if one of the big teams had put in a very large bid then i'm not so sure. But anyway, you didn't address the fact that ALL Championship teams have to sell their best players whether they want to or not, and it says very little about ambition.
Thats my point exactley, so in simple terms neither United or Wednesday will ever be able to compete at a top class level till serious money is pumped into either.
I think that is certainly true to a point. But once you get into the Premier, if you have a good set up, it is possible to survive and you must slowly build up momentum over the years. It is getting ever harder for a team to get promotion and stay there for more than two seasons, though.
Also, money doesn't buy success, as Newcastle has shown us all. However, no team will ever win the Premier again without spending 100's of millions on their squad, I believe. If you have a top quality player in the Premier they will be bought by one of the top clubs before too long.
crookesey 12-07-2009, 12:37 why not make it 23,501 crooksy old lad.
As you well know, there are no Wednesday supporters on this forum who actually attend matches.
