View Full Version : Independent restaurants in Sheffield
Every thread seems to be full of people recommending chain restaurants and personally i think they are all terrible. So, which independent restaurants in Sheffield serve good food? Does not matter where i have a car.
Also, everyone go eat at the tulip lounge.
Thats just to save the places employees filling up this thread with crap.

you thought you'd get in there first eh?
EccyBabe 09-07-2009, 16:50 Have you tried Otto's on Sharrow Vale Road? It used to be San Lorenzo (I think), but it's got new owners. They do lovely Morrocan/Turkish food, it's all fresh vegs, herbs and spices. The people that own it are really friendly, and they have an offer on at the moment £14.99 for 2 courses and a glass of wine.
We had Lamb Tagine with veg, and sea bass. The deserts are good too, the ginger cheesecake is fantastic  We will def go back, I'm planning to take the in-laws it's that good! ;)
I have enjoyed good food at Cubanas, The Milestone near Kelham island and as it happens the Tulip Lounge. Even though i dont work there. Do think its a shame that there are 3 Italian chain restaurants in Leopold square. Cant help thinking it would be nicer if they made it viable for more independants it would create more of a buzz and atmosphere. More like the piazza's and squares of Europe.
trickytracy 13-07-2009, 17:35 I highly recommend....
1. The Rush Hour, Chesterfield Road, Heely - Fab food, excellent service. Signature dish - good jerk chicken. Quality fish, varied menu etc. Does great value set menu. Its not chips and something nasty
2. Blue Room, Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, nearly as good - again good set menu
Sette Colli at Hillsborough and Viva Tequila at Gleadless are good.
Platillos in Leopold Square

theripsaw 16-07-2009, 08:44 Rafters- Nether Green, West 10- Ranmoor
MrSkinner 16-07-2009, 08:58 Just head up London Rd, don't think there are any chains up there.
Also have to give Nonna's a shout - well known but fantastic...still.
Best eating out in Sheffield is Moran's on Abbeydale Road near Dore Station.
Honorary mention to Rafters (though it's been a while).
Oriental award goes to Thai at the travellers, Holmesfield.
I thoroughly recommend Uncle Sam's on Ecclesall Road, great american food, very reasonably priced and a lovely atmosphere to sit in. They even have a little train whizzing around on a train track attatched to the roof, which I think is a really nice little feature.
I would also recommend trying Piccolinos on West St. Gorgeous Italian food and lovely atmosphere!

hi! we are totally independent and are one of a kind in Sheffield if not in south Yorkshire.
we are a cafe by day restaurant by night, we serve fish, vegi and vegan food, we have organic and fair trade ingredients, we cater for parties and birthdays.
we are at 53 chesterfield rd 01142557797.
hope to see you sometime. :)
Bubbaray 20-07-2009, 11:24 Wig and pen or the milestone are both great and do good offers
Sunday lunch at the milestone rocks though
Best meal out I've had in Sheffield recently was in Artisan, in Crosspool just off the A57, easily found on Google maps. Apparently the service can be patchy, but my wife and I were booked at 9.00pm on a Friday (maybe it was after the evening rush period) and the service was absolutely fine. Haven't heard anyone complain about the food at all though; the fixed price menu (£26 per head) was delicious and excellent value for money. If you're on this menu go for the 7 hour lamb! Was frankly fantastic.
Completely agree, at times like this we need to be supporting the independant restaurants. The chains can look after themselves.
Everyone go to Ninos on abbeydale road, the food is lush.
The last time I tasted food that good is in Italy!!
Would seriously recommend the Fillet Dijon - looked every bite.
Don't forget the pubs out there making an effort with home cooked food too. Some great examples are the Coach & Horses in Dronfield, Hearty Oak at Dronfield Woodhouse, Cricket Inn at Totley, Crown at Totley, Bradway at Bradway, Castle at Bradway, Milestone at Kelham Island, New Barrack Tavern at Hillsborough etc
I would also recommend trying Piccolinos on West St. Gorgeous Italian food and lovely atmosphere!
Do you mean Piccolo's? The one tucked in the corner across from the Cavendish with the green sign? Because if you do, I don't know why you think it's a lovely atmosphere! It's location just means it's usually full of chavs/students basically out to line their stomach before the binge-drinking begins.
I think you're confused with Piccolino, which is next to the Winter Gardens and is a lovely place. Expensive, yes, but their pasta is amazing, and a much nicer atmosphere than most other restaurants in town.
Bubbaray 21-07-2009, 14:12 Piccolino's (near winter gardens) would be a chain restaurant.
NO I definaltly mean Nino's, the Italian restaurant on abbeydale road, used to be dolca vita!
Couldn't be any further away from the experience i've had at ninos.
Piccolino's (near winter gardens) would be a chain restaurant.
I know it is. I was just mentioning it in the context that Ditz earlier referred to Piccolino's on West Street when they actually meant Piccolo's. I then happened to add where Piccolino (no 's' on the end) is actually located, to clear up confusion.
medicgirl 21-07-2009, 17:08 oops, what I was going to write has already been said!!
Divorcee 21-07-2009, 20:40 Milestone is good, but the service is shocking, Nonnas (does exactly what is says on the tin, but you have to eat with the want to be's on Friday and Saturday) and the Wig and Pen. Old Vicarage was good, but not eaten there for a long time. Moran's is always raved about too. I think the choice is pretty poor in Sheffield, we're just turning into a chain.
Bubbaray 22-07-2009, 08:25 I have to disagree with the service in the milestone, I have had nothing but great service, even on busy times. There was also one occasion we aske for a bottle of prosecco, unfortunatly they didn't have any but the offered us a bottle of house champagne for the same price. Good Work Fellas :D
pete_jim 22-07-2009, 10:04 Greenhead House (Chapeltown) but book early!, Morans (Abbeydale Road), Rafters (went last week excellent), Marco @ Milano, Nonna's, Otto's, Zeugma, Yamasushi, Garden Room @ The Cavendish (Baslow), RushHour(Chesterfield Rd), Blue Room, Artisan & Canteen, Thyme Cafe, Pasta Bar(Sharrowvale Road), Dore Grill...... not really been to any others regularly in Sheffield as I like to cook at home!
Dam House - near Children's, Bay Leaves - Ecclesfield.
lovely09 23-07-2009, 10:40 I much remember the food.I love a restaurant as long as it serve foods that i love like steak and healthy salads.Roasted chicken is also yummy.
The Damhouse 25-07-2009, 08:58 We must be one of the most independent sheffield restaurants
owners - from Sheffield
management team - from Sheffield
head chef and all chefs - from Sheffield
Looking forward to seeing you soon
nicolagroom 25-07-2009, 20:59 The Derwent Arms, just off the big roundabout.
Yog Sothoth 26-07-2009, 06:09 Silversmiths, Arundel Street. Pie Night!
I went to Thai at The Travellers, Holmesfield last night and the food was excellent, nice setting and the staff were really good.
The only downside is its nearly 20 miles from where I live :(
Definitely recommend Morans - went there last nice, absolutely delicious! Expensive but definitely worth it for a treat.
Also love The Blue Room and The Milestone.
Have to agree though that there arent enough really good independent restaurants in Sheffield esp. compared to the likes of Leeds and Manchester.
libertarian 01-08-2009, 01:23 Vito's - South Road, Walkley. Excellent Italian with an even better wine list.
We used to go to Vito's regularly but we were disappointed with the veg..it was frozen.(frozen before cooked-you know what I mean)
OK-not a big deal for some but Vito's aint a cheap restaurant..

Never had that problem. Ok only been three/ four times. Never been disappointed personally. Everything seemed fresh to me. I agree it's not cheap but there's far worse prices in Sheffield for much less. IMHO.
(No I'm not in any way linked to them, I've just enjoyed my (limited) experiences there).
