View Full Version : Elvis spotted in Walkley.
Kristian 15-07-2005, 17:43 Now, some of you that know me well might assume that when the following incident occurred I was a little inhebriated; I wasn't.
One day this week (Tuesday I think) I was driving to work up Walkley Lane towards Crookes when who do I spot on the pavement walking down the hill? Elvis.
Now, I'm not as stupid as I look (that would be difficult! :hihi: ), and I'm not suggesting that it was the Elvis that I saw, but there was a guy wearing a black wig (I hope it wasn't his real hair, because if it was it desperately needed some conditioner!) a shirt open to lower chest and flared trousers (never a good look on an older gentleman IMO). He even had some large sunglasses on!
Has anybody else seen this, and if so I wonder if he dresses like this all the time?

"Thank you very much"?
I've seen him too - was he wearing the white outfit?
I've seen him too a couple of time and one of the times he was with a woman who was all 50-d up too.

there is one Elvis who seems to live in Broomhil and another who lives mostly in Crookes but sometimes in Walkely.
I've been on the bus with both of them. A bit tense to say the least:D

Yeah, he picks up his paper from the "Fosters" newsagent - I've seen him a few mornings - always dressed as Elvis.
Ousetunes 16-07-2005, 08:00 He walked up Barber Road on Thursday afternoon. He looked a bit hot under the collar, which is strange as I presumed Elvis had got (of should I say gotten) used to living in hot weather.
I've also seen him in a bank in Broomhill. Didn't withdraw a million dollars though, probably paying his water rates?
I feel a bit sorry for him actually. I mean, when I was 14 I went absolutely bonkers on the Beatles, bought a Lennon cap and grew my hair into a Beatles cut. Even bought my first guitar.
But at least I grew out of it (with the exception of the guitar).
To live your present in the past, hopelessly wishing you were someone else, dressing in the style of a burger-obssessed tub of lard who died 28 years ago - having sung your best songs many years before that - I think is pretty sad.
Still, at least he's got his regular slot on Steve Wright In The Afternoon. Not exactly Caesar's Palace though, is it?
jdgraham83 16-07-2005, 08:05 i lve in crookes and i see elvis all the time, hes my hero. Think i had a chat with him once on the bench in broomhill after being in the balti king, cant rememver what he said but i bet it was pretty intresting
If it's the guy I'm thinking of, he was in the same year as me at uni, doing the same course...
jdgraham83 16-07-2005, 09:21 this guys well old so maybe not
He was a mature student IIRC...
mr.blaze 16-07-2005, 11:05 He drinks in Broomhill regulary, he's a dood
Used to see him all the time in The Place in Broomhill when i lived up there a couple of years ago. Hadn't seen him in ages untill a couple of weeks ago spotted him playing one on one touch rugby with an eight year old down Encliffe Park. He may be getting on a bit but he can still move.
jdgraham83 16-07-2005, 11:53 legend:thumbsup:
slimsid2000 16-07-2005, 12:37 I think he's really called Tony. I know who you mean.
jdgraham83 16-07-2005, 14:37 he must get hot in all that gear in this weather, always looks a bit red in the cheeks. I wonder if he sings too? Might ask him next time i see him

He is indeed. I have been in classes with him. I have never heard him sing. I saw him only yesterday at uni.
jdgraham83 16-07-2005, 14:54 so hes all with it upstairs then? I thought he was nuts
slimsid2000 16-07-2005, 15:01 I'm not a psyciatrist and wouldn't like to say one way or the other. He seems sane enough (apart form his appearence).

Bloody hell, I graduated two years ago and he's still there!?
BoppinBruce 18-07-2005, 08:47 I know the Crookes' Elvis very well indeed. I have led a thread on this very forum concerning him. He lives in a flat opposite the Jet Garage. However I have never seen another Elvis in the locallity, or in fact in Sheffield.
One evening last year, when Elvis had been invited to a 'do', oh yes, he gets invited to many 'dos' does Elvis, he was waiting for his female escort outside the Ball Public House in Crookes. I was chatting away to him as she arrived and it was none other that Tina Turner. Elvis got in the taxi with her and they both went off, so I understand from conversations afterwards, to a slap up meal at The Curator's House in The New Botanical Gardens as guests. He also gets free tickets to pop concerts locally and at the arena.
He is eccentric to say the least but get me a sequined suit, 38 w 32 leg trousers and I'll dress up as Elvis to enjoy some of the perks he gets!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bully_Beef 18-07-2005, 09:02 Yeah, I'm a big fan of this guy too.
For me, his masterstroke was when I saw him out drinking in what appeared to be a "University of Sheffield Rowing Club" shirt (or something similar), except that over the "rowing club" bit he had scrawled "Elvis Society" in felt tip.
Genius
tamarindl 18-07-2005, 09:51 i've seen him a couple of times in Crooksmoor but he's never in full Elvis garb. or he was in the "army casual look". he always makes me smile.
Disco_Cat 18-07-2005, 12:52 He doesn't wear the full garb much these days, mostly a vest that reveals his lovely hairy back. I once saw him in a chip shop that was extra significant spotting.
Isn't he a devout Communist? I'm sure I've seem him selling the morning Star down in London

i have been spared this experience, has had a leather bomber(esque) jacket or hawanian shirt on. wasn't sure the first time I saw him if i was imagining the likeness but subsequent conversations and this thread has at last proved my thoughts wrong and that Elvis is officially alive and well in Sheffield. :)
peteblades 18-07-2005, 14:34 The Crookes version of Elvis is actually my girlfriend's uncle Tony. Which is quite funny. but not for her
SUNCADDIE7 23-07-2005, 12:19 the Guy that Your talking About, i think Goes All over, But i have HURD him sing, Well if that,s What you Want to Call it,lol he Just Can,t sing.
seanyboy 23-07-2005, 12:22 I've seen Elvis a few times in Walkley! Walks past where I work some mornings - usually in the sequined, white Las Vegas getup
up at our other shop we had a elvis ( herdings at gleadless) im not sure that its the same one as you lot but he was very strange, and quite scarey. he wanted a tattoo but said he couldnt sit down and that he was also claustraphobic(sp?) so he might shoot for the door any moment and could we keep it open just incase and that he needed a huge glass of water. *and* after could i go home with him as he couldnt use his hands and needed somethings picking up :o
needless to say we couldnt fit him in and were fully booked for a very long time ;)
LordChaverly 23-07-2005, 12:53 Are you sure it was not Slimsid trying to attract females?
On a similar theme, I have seen a guy around town in a string vest, come rain or shine and also in the depths of winter. I have even seen him attend performances at the Crucible in his string vest. I wonder who he is? I have come to the conclusion he must have some strange medical condition which prevents him covering up his arms.

Rab C Nesbitt?
Litha, the guy in your shop certainly sounds all shook up.
Isn't he a devout Communist?
Yep, I used to work in a shop and he used to come in and sometimes he'd go off on one about how he wouldn't buy any of the mainstream papers because they were all spreading capitalist lies. Think he used to buy the Morning Star or something.
Kristian 24-07-2005, 03:38 Wow, so I wasn't dreaming then! :D It just goes to show how dressing strangely can get you noticed.
< Goes to try on Bungle Bear outfit! :o
The one I've seen a couple of times was working in the Oxfam shop on Ecclesall Road; it wasnt a wig and he told me it took about 4 hours every day to get his hair like that. Wish I had that much spare time.

Elvis working in an Oxfam shop? Surely it's time to call the National Enquirer? :o
:) That's the truth. Sometime early last winter I think when I was looking for a pair of gloves urgently. No reason to make it up either. Thought it was very funny myself.

I wasn't suggesting you were pulling our collective legs Wendy! I just think the American gutter-press would have a field day with that story! :)
thanks for the clarity. What I did find more than somewhat disconcerting is that he actually had the time to spend FOUR hours doing his hair like that. Thinking about it just makes me :P and :P and :P and :P

I was in there the other day, but didn't see Elvis :(
I feel deprived now....

Well I must be really very privileged then because I saw him there twice in the space of about 2-3 weeks, last November. Hadnt seen him before or since.
I had the radio on hallam this morning and the D.J was talking about this very subject. I suppose from now on half of sheffield will be looking out for this guy.
Cant believe I have never spotted him :(
Yes he was really quite nice once I'd gotten over the initial shock. I What did the Radio Hallam DJ have to say?
Just that he had spotted the guy up crookes and mentioned that when he was at uni he used to see him too.. I think he saw this thread and thought it would help him fill the gaps :)
Yeah! Seen the ''King'' drinking in The Fox & Duck & Broomhil Tav. Pretty darned good Huh?!
I spoke to him a few times, he use to come in to the print shop i worked at in walkley to do his photocopying and faxing stuff.
intooblivion 06-08-2005, 11:52 He is always in the punch bowl in crookes, he lives round the corner from me.
I wonder if he knows what a legend he is on Sheffield Forum...

No, but I did see 'Ozzy Osbourne' in Marks and Spencers in Meadowhall! Has to be seen to be believed.
Kristian 09-08-2005, 19:30 I saw him again this morning on the corner of South Road and Walkley Lane. Was v tempted to stop and shout 'search for Elvis on the Sheffield Forum' but there was a large cross-looking man squidged into a Nissan Micra directly behind me, so I thought it best not to loiter. :(
slimsid2000 31-08-2005, 13:57 I have just seen him today going into a shop on Crooks.
He truely is a great man.
I know the guy you're on about; I've seen him in Crookes many times over the past five years. He used to do an evening class at Sheffield University which I've since taken over teaching, but (unfortunately) I wasn't there at the same time...
zombiekillah 31-08-2005, 16:40 yeah i saw him on crookes today too going into a charity shop :) he's always knockin about up here! bless him.

roughy101 28-01-2006, 22:32 if you go to puerto rico in gran canaria, there are loads of elvis performing in all the bars,in fact elvis kissed my hand about three yrs ago,oh it really is time to wash it:gag: :gag:
RayOberstein 29-01-2006, 01:33 I've also seen Elvis in Retford.
TheRedWizard 29-01-2006, 09:25 'Elvis' is a good bloke, totally sound - just likes the style. If you're reading this hello!
And to all the hundreds of other Walkley Against War people - it seems like years since we spent long nights making placards, marched into town in our hundreds (getting saluted by Terry Waite of all people on Commonside!!!), and spent hours on buses down to London (what happened to our WOW banner?????!!!!).
Incidentally, I remember 'Elvis' telling me that there would be years of civil disquiet and unrest in Iraq, to a much greater extent than we were predicting. Looks like he was right........
That's ridiculous; I found him very pleasant to speak with and still can not fathom out how he finds the time to spend FOUR hours just doing his hair to get it in to the ridiculous style

Don't be daft Kristian you can't have as I saw him walking up London Road with Buddy Holly on Tuesday.
radiomick 03-02-2006, 11:59 If you want see Elvis, he goes in Big I's Pantry on south rd most mornings, has poached egg on toast.
