View Full Version : Hui Wei, West St/Glossop Rd
Sara1312 07-07-2009, 21:22 I have been to this restaurant now twice and I would say it's the best chinese restaurant in Sheffield by far! The environment is great, friendly staff, great prices and even better food! I am very particular abo0ut my food but everything I've had so far is wonderful! I used to go to a restaurant on London Rd and sad to say I won't be going back there as my allegiance has changed :hihi:
I will deffinatly be back as soon as the mood takes me lol!!!
BEST FOOD EVER!
dandelion59 07-07-2009, 22:21 Wok mania is just as good. And cheaper.

it may be cheaper but nowhere near as good
Soon to have Live Piano Music too! ;) Beat that for a Romantic Night out then!

Yeah that is exactly what Wok Mania is - CHEAP LOL! :hihi:
If my husband took me their for a romantic meal I'd slap him, it's as bad as goin to McDonald's for a romantic meal! :loopy:
Ive been about 8 times the crispy prawns are gorgeous! Its easily the best chinese in SHeffield and ie never had a bad meal from there. Wok Mania is digusting, it serves cold food and is generally not that tasty thats why its cheap!
Hui Wei is my favourite chinese restaurant in the North, have not had a better experience anywhere.

best restaurant in Sheffield!!!
Furblefox 09-07-2009, 14:15 I'll agree. Huiwei is great!
Wokmania is an overpriced, greasy horrid buffet. Better than No1 but no where near as good as Jumbo.
Incidentally, If you want cheap, it's hard to go beat Toykou, but the surroundings at huiwei are much better ;)
losthighway 10-07-2009, 20:42 Just to say I totally agree... Hui Wei is excellent. Been LOADS of times since it opened and it really is the best chinese in Sheffield by far. There tofu in garlic and chilli is amazing!
As for the suggestion that Wok Mania is better and cheaper... cheaper yes but better... erm no! But hey, everyones tastes are different! ;)
Smack Jack 10-07-2009, 20:51 Agree with OP 100 percent. Noodle Inn has gone right down hill and Hui Wei is fab. The food is amazing
chinaski 10-07-2009, 21:15 Hui Wei is full of English people . . .
Noodle Inn is full of Chinese . . .
says it all.

Dont agree. Good food is not the only thing that takes the Chinese to Noodle Inn. Its a community thing and they are given free tea and soup etc. Plus Noodle Inn staff and customers can be rude to the english. I dont believe you have eaten in Hui Wei tbh if you think Noodle Inn serves better food. There is no comparison

I visited Hui Wei when it first opened and wasn't impressed but I think it's probably changed since then . . . new chef? after reading this thread, I'll give it another go.
Why do you think Noodle Inn has gone downhill? I've been going most weeks for a couple of years now and never noticed any changes.

New owner since Dec 08 ;)
Panorama 15-07-2009, 14:35 Agreed, Hui Wei's food is delicious, lovely restaurant to dine in too.
Soon to have Live Piano Music too! ;) Beat that for a Romantic Night out then!
Piano now installed & fully functional, tunes on request or if you like play your own piece to that someone special that's dining with you? = =
Smack Jack 17-07-2009, 18:19 Noodle Inn has gone down hill. It used to be great but recently I have found the food and service very poor. The rude attitude toward us 'long noses' is no fun and I never agreed with the free tea for chinese customers policy. What really annoyed me at my last visit was that we ordered bbq ribs with our starter and were brought honey or mustard ones, some that we didnt like anyway. We were 100% sure that we had asked right in the first place and the waitress read our order back before taking it to the kitchen. When we refused the wrong starter she went to the kitchen, then came back with them and insisted they were what we ordered. She did this twice and then she was rude throughout service after we got our proper order. I got the feeling this mistake was going to cause her some trouble, and even had we not been right I was annoyed that it was a case of 'you will get what you are given' rather than the customer is always right.
Hui Wei is my new favourite chinese. And I am gutted about Noodle Inn. It has been a regular of mine for years - but basically Hui Wei seems to get better and better and the quality and service at Noodle Inn worse and worse

As a chinese myself, I agree that some of the waitresses can act rude. Mostly the food is okay but once we went there and the duck had gone off. We had asked for a discount and they said that they could knock off 10% off the meal. however, since this was only something 50p we had to do a lot of prompting to see what else they could do.. There are better restaurants in Sheffield, has anyone tried Wong Ting? Its one of my favourites..

I'd be willing to. Where is it?

Wong Ting is on Matilda Street, same street as Forbidden Planet. It's a great place, they have a traditional Chinese menu if you're feeling adventurous (I find the spicing better too - a bit more heat) and the lunchtime Dim Sum is really good, especially the satay whelks.
However, I've actually found the service here a little off if you're English. It annoys me how they assume you're going to order lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork balls and eat with a knife and fork. They tend to stick you in a corner. (Or maybe it's just because I'm a messy eater :hihi:).
Back to Noodle Inn - I don't agree with the free tea thing. We've always been given a 10% discount card so I don't grumble too much. I suppose everyone had different experiences. I've not stepped foot in Dim Sum, across from Noodle Inn, for over a year after I was shouted at for daring to ask if my drink was coming, 15 minutes after I'd ordered it.

6 matilda street, near the moor.. :)
their roast pork and duck is very nice and mostly seems a better dining experience than noodle inn or many other chinese restaurants.
have a nice time :)

Dim Sum on London rd? that restaurant sucks. Don't go spreading it around but some of the chinese community don't really like the owner, (that shiny faced woman).. its a bit titch aswell as most of the stuff tasting average to poor. they put way too much soy sauce in everything, particularly the dim sum.

Yeah, I've always found the owner pretty scary, like she's choking on chicken feet.
One thing I've never understood about some dim sum, is why they serve salad cream with it - I'm thinking of the deep fried cuttle fish. Surely salad cream isn't traditional?

Well, I've never had deep fried cuttle fish with salad cream but i google id just then and apparently some dim sum are served with salad cream but i don't think cuttle fish is meant to be one of them. I'm not really sure though.
Excellent Restaurant, I really reccomend this place, I went 2 weeks ago & couldn't fault anything, Waiters smiled so that was a winner! :hihi:
The Live Piano playing was Top Class & I couldn't believe the tunes he was playing were so modern (Beyonce Halo was so nice):o
Going there again on the 22nd Aug on a friends supprise Birthday Party for 35
Kaye2812 07-08-2009, 15:16 We have been ti Hui Wei several times for lunch during the week (staff birthdays) and the food has always been excellent and very reasonably priced. I never understood why it doesn't get busier at lunchtimes!
Masquerade 07-08-2009, 16:04 you should hear what the manageress/waiters at dim sum say about their 'white' customers...! i'm sure they do the same at noodle inn..!

What does it say? That if you're English go to Hui Wei because you'll like the food better there? And if you're Chinese go to Noodle Inn?
