Hi,can anyone tell me how much it costs to have horse shoes refitted?I have for the last six years had my horses hot shod every six to eight weeks at a cost of £55each.This morning the farrier turned up(late again)looked at the horses hooves and said "they only need a refit and they would have to be done cold as he,d run out of gas for his mobile forge" I agreed to this as I thought I might save a bit money. When he,d finished he charged me £50 each horse for putting the old shoe,s back on.I might as well have had new ones put on.Have I been ripped off? Does anyone know of a good farrier who needs a new customer?

Which farrier do you have (pm me if you want)? And what area are you?
Have you thought about boots as opposed to shoes? Old Macs, for instance, are guarenteed for 6 months so £ for £ are the same as shoeing when factoring in the cost of the boots and trimming every 6 weeks. Then, after the 6 months you'll be saving money. I had a pair of old macs for my old mare, lasted 5 years and sold them with her. I'm now saving for a pair for my new boy. There are other makes, for different applications and foot shape. But I'd highly recommend the transition to barefoot with the boots when needed.
I've also (with the support of my farrier) started trimming the feet myself. The farrier attends them every 3 months minimum anyway, and I try and keep on top of it in the meantime. It's a learning curve but means more knowledge for me, money in my pocket, and more regular trimming than just once every 6 weeks.

I've had refits in the past - usually about £5 less.
