What are all these stupid signs about. They are situtated at various places in Sheffield and are IMO totally meaningless and a waste of money.
While Sheffield has to be one of the leafiest cities in the country to call it a forest is stretching the point a bit too far.
Surely the cost involved in erecting these signs could be put to better use. :loopy:
Well it does seem strange when you're driving down a dual carriageway and see a small block of woodland with 'South Yorkshire Forest' next to it.
In effect they refer to not one large block of woodland, but an overall description of a forest being an area of woodland with settlements scattered throughout.
It's an ongoing project covering much of South Yorkshire (I don't think Doncaster is included) that is covering a range of issues not just planting trees but other stuff such as community projects and so on.

That's a good questiom. In fact if you look at these signs carefully you'll see a line of very very small print along the bottom to the effect that allowing your dog to pee on a tree in the South Yorkshire Forest renders you liable to an on-the-spot fixed penalty of £50.00.
That's how they're going to pay for the signs.
The salaries for the pee-wardens are being met by some European Development Fund, - probably the same one that paid for that big greenhouse by the central library. ;)

I read an article about this in a local paper/magazine (can't remember which). Anyhow, the signs may baffle people that pass them as they wonder where the hell the forest is, but as far as I can remember the areas where you see these signs are the areas in which mass tree plantation has taken place. Apparently, the council and other agencies have got together and made up this plan to reclaim redundant farm land etc to make new forest areas in south yorkshire.
